Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Seemed to have forgotten my password again.HmmGrin so sticking with NewYear for now.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 29/02/2020 21:50

Someone recommended an immune boosting powder on here earlier I think - can anyone find the link?

FuckThisWind · 29/02/2020 21:50

veneto so pleased to hear from you.

And to all of you... thanks for keeping my head screwed on. Today was challenging. I felt employers don't give a fuck. And I'm close to walking away, due to my recent health diagnosis and my wanting to spend ad much time as I can with my Mum. This thing has really made me think.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 29/02/2020 21:54

Wishing you all a speedy recovery @VenetoResident

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 21:58

So glad you are starting to get over the worse there...we were worried about you guys Thanks

Just a thought for those still looking for cleaning supplies and hand gel... try office supply stores either online or in store. I’m in the US, but just looked and found good stock at normal prices.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:05

So part of the UK's master plan is:

"Emergency registration of health professionals who have retired"

Given the risk to health workers of infection and the risk to over 60's in particular surely they can't be expecting a big take up of this?

I managed to get hand gel from here yesterday evening

You might think so @wheresmymojo but my retired GP volunteered to go and fight Ebola in Sierra Leone five years ago! The humanitarian urge runs strong... Grin

MotherOfDragonite · 29/02/2020 22:14

I'm not feeling really reassured by the fact that it's one of the government's key tactics, though, tbh...

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 22:17

I'm not sure I would call it a 'battle plan' myself.

I'm hoping that more will come than just the bits outlined here:

Boris Johnson announces coronavirus 'battleplan' as three more cases confirmed news.sky.com/story/boris-johnson-announces-coronavirus-battleplan-as-three-more-cases-confirmed-11946362

Lurker hear. Got a small stock of food and meds built up (DH is just about on board).

Are masks a good idea? I travel all over the country for events with a couple hundred people in attendance - I think it’s highly unlikely any will be cancelled. I have underlying health conditions so want to know I’m as protected as possible.

Master plan.... I know health care professionals in their early 60’s who are thinking of early retirement because of covid.

itsnotjustflu · 29/02/2020 22:24

Hi everyone....I've been lurking and reading for a few days. I am a newbie prepper and I'm relieved to see lots of sensible people chatting on this thread. Not sure many people 'get me'. My husband was all for the initial prepping and still is to a degree but is getting frustrated with me now talking about it all so hoping this will be a good place to chat and discuss everything. I had an uneasy feeling from day 1 about this. It just didn't feel like swine flu or anything else we'd been through before. Anyway my house is fully prepped. I think we've spent about £800 on prepping now. Hubby wants us to debunk to the outer reaches of Scotland if things get really bad but I don't think I want to leave my home. I don't think it would help my anxiety. But we do live in a town with lots of people who wouldn't treat others with kindness. I literally have no room left in the cupboards. One thing we did prep for was no electric or gas. I'm sure it won't come to that but we've bought a mini gas stove with 18 mini gas bottles and a generator. They're our over the top preps but we already had the generator and needed a stove for the beach. I also have a load of books sat in my amazon box to help my son with his education if he does have to go out of school. We have said first case in our town and we are taking him out of school. It may come sooner than that though as we are getting twitchy. It's not really a concern as in we don't want to catch it but more a concern about what might happen.

Orangecake123 · 29/02/2020 22:25

Before all of this you could actually buy a whole box of 50 surgical masks for less than £3.

itsnotjustflu · 29/02/2020 22:27

also to add there's LOADS of hand gel and other antibac stuff in my local shops....shelves are also well stocked apart from uht milk in morrisons

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 22:28

@itsnotjustflu you sound fabulous!
Wonderful stash you have there, well done.
Welcome to the thread, you will definitely fit right in here.

itsnotjustflu · 29/02/2020 22:28

I ordered masks from amazon on day 4 of the outbreak in China....they weren't mega expensive but there's still no sign of them. I have to say I'm not too bothered about masks though. I plan on not going anywhere

Orangecake123 · 29/02/2020 22:29

I was supposed to catch a flight to go home this friday over the weekend for a concert with my brother. My mother doesn't want me travelling at all. So I most likely will stay where I am (lose £70) and my brother will take someone else with him.

itsnotjustflu · 29/02/2020 22:30

thank you @ofwarren - I think it's time to be organised and sensible. Better to be prepared than be panicking in a few days or weeks time hey

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 22:30

Don't blame you @itsnotjustflu
I do have 14 masks but the plan is not to go out at all.
I only have them for if we need to go to the hospital or something else that is vital.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 29/02/2020 22:33

I feel like the masks are to reassure other people and not going to effective for much more than that. I mean unless you are getting the high rated ones you might as well put a piece of cloth over your nose and mouth and call it good.

KarmaKhameleon · 29/02/2020 22:34

Why is everyone buying anti bacterial hand gel when this is a virus?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 22:35

Mine are the good masks but like you say, you can't rely on them.
If we had to go to hospital for any reason then we would use them but other than that, we are just staying home.

FecktheBoss · 29/02/2020 22:37

Karma - partly for secondary infections but hand gel which is over high in alcohol will also kill viruses
