Prepping for a pandemic....8

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 21:54

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

I had a big shop delivered earlier with plenty of "sickness" type food, all either microwave or add water stuff that will keep for ages. My two will eat it as snack food or lunches if its not needed. Lots of soup, a variety of nice noodle pots, jelly, pasta pots and rice pots, a couple of boxes of ice pops that can be chucked in the freezer if anyone gets a sore throat, some of that aerosol dettol that you can spray on everything, throat lozenges, a few boxes of tissues and a couple of extra bottles of hand wash. That's on top of my normal general stock of food, meds etc which should do us for about 4 weeks or so anyway.

I also ordered a couple of bottles of clinell cleaning spray and a big pack of the green clinell wipes online today, just in case one of us does get it. I figured that if it kills norovirus and mrsa, then it's probably good for cleaning the bathroom and loo, and wiping down door handles if any of us do get sick. I'm not bothering with masks, and if we need gloves I already have a box of 100 disposable ones in a drawer that I use for dyeing hair.

Things that ime do become far less effective much beyond their dates are dried yeast and baking powder

You can freeze dried yeast though if you have some coming up to its expiry date

FelicityFebruary · 29/02/2020 17:43

That's good to remember Hasa.

I bake a lot then take a break. So I've often come across slightly old yeast or baking powder

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 17:51

That's a great tip @HasaDigaEebowai . I didn't know that.

Is 70% running alcohol effective as a hand sanitiser does anyone know?

I’ve noticed people talking about deep cleaning their homes. Apart from being pleasanter to be unwell in a clean house rather than a manky one, would deep-cleaning provide a barrier to the virus?

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 18:01

Just checking in after a day out...I think this will be my last weekend of socialising!

We are almost centered between Newbury and Haslemere so coming at us from both sides now Confused

@magicrainbowbeans

From my understanding it will be fine to use but will dry your hands out and is very flammable, so needs to be stored safely. Do not dilute it as it will then be ineffective, but maybe use moisturiser / aloe vera gel once it has dried into your hands.

Squirrelonwheels · 29/02/2020 18:05

Just adding my thanks for these threads - I’ve never been a prepper, but I do keep a well stocked dried cupboard as I cook and bake a lot. This thread has prompted me to spend this week sorting through everything, working out what I’ve got and adding to it and I feel much better about the prospect of any CV measures that now might get imposed. To me it seems like there’s no downside to prepping a bit - hopefully it’s slightly wasted effort, but I can rest easier now knowing that we’d be okay. So thanks for the ideas and the (contrary to criticism on other posts) completely non-hysterical chat about it.

I've been aware of hand hygiene like never before. Thinking things through.

I recalled the blog linked here a few days back about using this time to practice for an outbreak. But that was talking about on a population level.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/02/2020 18:15

If you’re not familiar with it it’s probably worth googling the 12 step hand washing method and using that. As a hcp this was drummed into us in training and we used fluorescent gel stuff to see how effective our hand washing was or wasn’t.

And you need to use the same method with gel.

Was struck by a thought whilst in Lidls today - Easter Eggs. I bought in a load of Easter choccies, just on the off chance of having to go into isolation before I remembered again.

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 18:21

For me if nothing else it's a chance to be forced organised.
Dh slogging over the freezer, I'll have more efficient space, sort out old stuff be more stream lined and cost effective.

An early spring clean.

spacechimp · 29/02/2020 18:22

There is a recipe for handgel with isopropyl alcohol, aloe vera gel, and essential oils which I have used. I was able to get everything I needed online including the 99% alcohol which I am now paranoid about storing safely.
It’s the ‘stronger hand sanitiser’ at the link below:

wellnessmama.com/281/homemade-hand-sanitizer/

DryHeave · 29/02/2020 18:23

Took delivery of the hand sanitiser I ordered from Wilko mid-week. Was concerned they’d cancel the order or not have stock. That was the final piece of the puzzle, but been looking at this thread for any more ideas. Vitamins & chocolate seem like good idea!

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 18:25

Op that's very much how I'm feel, the net is drawing tighter. It's all around me.
The local shop man said a customer who works at the local hospital showed him a picture of a man being shown in (unidentifiable) with people in hazmets etc.

Dc school was closed to deep cleaning, where I work people from all over the zone 2 areas at half term, people sent home, my shire mentioned in the confirmed case etc.
