Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

In England? Do we take that as meaning, if Scotland get their first case, they will update straight away?

It's always been the case that Scotland, Wales and N Ireland will announce their own cases first (says on the page "If more cases are confirmed in the UK, it will be announced as soon as possible by the Chief Medical Officer of the affected country."), so this page is just confirming what England's arrangements are (and overall UK reporting).

Really good Medcram video providing both sensible and useful advice on what to do if you suspect you have the virus and precautions to take. Well worth a watch and actually I found it very calming and eased the anxiety.

Gammeldragz · 29/02/2020 14:26

That Telegraph article is 2 weeks old. We have tested over 10k now.

Tropicalsquirrel · 29/02/2020 14:26

Checking in from Singapore. All very calm here, number of new cases today 4- it’s been 1-3 cases a day for a while, so feels controlled. I’ve got full cupboards and another big order coming next week so feeling prepared. Still can’t get masks, hand gel or wipes here. But otherwise it feels calm.

However, I’m finding myself increasingly concerned about family in the U.K. I’ve just done a big ocado shop for my Dad to make sure he’s prepared. Fingers crossed it all arrives! Prepping from uk supermarkets is much easier than here in SG- we don’t get multipacks, as great a selection of soup, or fray bentos pies and other canned delights.

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 14:27

Re the telegraph, that's going to be really hard to police and manage!

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 14:28

Well spotted @Gammeldragz

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 29/02/2020 14:43

Blimey - we live in Berkshire and my DM and DF live in Glos. Good friends just been tested after developing coughs following their Italy ski trip and they live in Herts. Feel like its landing on our doorstep now Confused

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 14:51

Got an email for my ASDA delivery and I allow substitutes.
So I got a different Dettol soap substitution, but they didn't substitute my bread. They just said out of stock!
Does that mean there is no bread?

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 14:52

A local paper said one school asked pupils and staff who had been on an Italian ski trip to stay away?!

I'd also like to know where in the shires specifically those cases are.

Gammeldragz · 29/02/2020 14:55

Prepping wise - Added 3 packs of hotdog rolls to the bread freezer (which is nearly full, bread is big!). Also 15 (14 now Blush) toffee mulllerlights as they were on offer in Sainsbury for 35p. Only 'diet' food I eat (doing slimming world) as I'm not usually one for low fat stuff, but these remind me of school dinners and how much I used to love them (we had toffee yogurt sometimes, always seemed really exotic!).

Gammeldragz · 29/02/2020 14:56

@Snowdropdelight Reddit rumours one is Newbury, but not confirmed.

Coronavirus fears at UK hotel as guest 'self quarantines in room after Thailand trip'

The man is believed to have recently returned from a trip to Thailand, but has spent the last three days at the Radisson Blu in Liverpool's city centre

DH has doctor friend in Milan. He says it's a nightmare. But they have closed all schools, cinemas, concert hall, theatres -- and Milan isn't even in the quarantine zone.

We are shaking our heads over the "increase class sizes" plan.

DH has just bought and is using antibacterial spray for the first time in more than 20 years of marriage.

@OneTimePrepper
@ofwarren

I always skim posts and miss details fo please don’t worry about missing my comment about immune surpressing meds.

Am not known for being obsessive about cleanliness as do think a few germs are good for you - but have had to adapt following the prescription of immune surpressers.

We already all have colds and I have a temp today so just want to minimize my exposure to more germs. Don’t want to make the news!

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 15:12

Definitely minesapinot keep safe Flowers

BlackeyedSusan · 29/02/2020 15:14

Hold on a couple of weeks an you will only be a statistic not news as you will have lots of company and individual cases will no longer be news.

Not a pleasant thought.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 15:15

Having to go the shop as no bread coming in my ASDA order.
What would you say is safest:

Letting person on till handle my goods

Using self service and anti bac my hands after

I'm using contactless.
Bear in the mind the person on the till would have been handling cash all day

Ecuador reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

tryingtoprep · 29/02/2020 15:27

I got some extra wipes for our phones. They're alcohol free but have sodium chloride. Is that good enough? I already had some packs of Milton but wanted extra for family who haven't prepped.

I remember reading an article online on how to make your own nebuliser. Written by a doctor in the US after he found many medical insurers there wouldn't cover the cost of proper ones. It was basically an empty plastic bottle with holes stabbed in the sides. I'll try to find the link. Disclaimer: I have no idea how safe or not it would be to DIY without medical guidance.

I loved toffee yoghurt! That was our after school teatime treat.

tryingtoprep · 29/02/2020 15:29

@ofwarren I'd say self service. I've had people on the till serve me in the past and cough right into my face.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 15:33

3 more cases of #Coronavirus in #Lebanon

Tana433 · 29/02/2020 15:33

Just to let people know, i am currently eating peanut butter with a bbe date of jan '19 and drinking mugshots (noodley cup-a-soups) bbe may'19 and they taste absolutely fine with no ill effects felt. As long as tins arent dented or bulging, they will be fine long after bbe dates too I realise seasoned preppers are aware of this but just for the newly organised people to reassure them

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 15:34

I did it @tryingtoprep
Good thing is, they hand gel too. I have quite a few but I got 2 more.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 15:42

6th case Of #Coronavirus in #Croatia

NatoPMT · 29/02/2020 15:42

@Tana433 I have eaten Actavia yoghurts 3 months out of date and they were fine. Canned food lasts virtually forever. I ignore dates and listen to my nose and eyes
