Prepping for a pandemic...6

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Cambridgemasks is a good option but delivery now will take a while. They last for months so you just need one each and they are N99.
While I was waiting for them to arrive I bought the FFP1 after reading the paper I linked.
The p1 were inexpensive. Less than a coffee. They will be around 2 pounds i reckon so just buy one pack to stay safe. Chances are you won’t use them or will use them to decorate the baby’s room or repaint the kitchen .

Look at the footage and the length of the queue to buy them in South Korea, you don’t want to have to do that.

Hello, I've been lurking for a while.

Things seem to have stepped up a gear. I've never described myself as a 'prepper' but I've kept a reasonable supply of food at home. I think this is psychological, I grew up in a Yorkshire mining town in the 1980s, and when I was in my early 20s spent some time literally living hand to mouth. Now I'm a little better off, I never want to return to those times.

I think I could last three weeks on the food I have, but week 3 would involve some very odd meals!

I have my milk delivered and he also delivers bread, veg etc. So for as long as that service continues I would use it to keep stocked up on fresh items to save my tins and frozen food. Obviously in a serious SHTF situation the milkman won't be coming, but in the event of self isolation rather than widespread quarantine it will provide a useful option.

My team at work can work from home so I've told everyone to make sure they take their laptops home, and have all the remote access passwords, cables and chargers etc that they need. Obviously people who are ill wouldn't be expected to work, but having the ability to work from home (even just to deal with urgent things) could help to solve any child care issues etc.

Our Cambridge Masks arrived last week. When to start wearing ? Need to take the train tomorrow to London.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 06:16

The reuseable masks are here - also available on amazon and in screwfix. Be aware they are quite big, clearly designed primarily for men but they do have a double rubber seal. The straps are adjustable, They're ok for my DC (almost 15 and almost 13) but would be too big for most younger children.

I've linked to the whole page since wickes also have the disposable FFP3 (and lower P value masks) still in stock.

I also often drink uht it's fine in tea. I have got rice pudding for kids in tins to get their calcium fix if we can't get much milk.
We live in a rental and have a inspection next week. I hope they don't see all my stash in kitchen and be like Shock I don't think it's that bad. We have been so doing before that it's actually useful to have food.

Destinysdaughter · 25/02/2020 06:55

Just seen there is a case in Tenerife. I'm booked to go to Ibiza mid May. Seriously wondering whether to cancel?

wherearemychickens · 25/02/2020 07:04

I would see what your terms and conditions say - the later you can leave it to cancel, the more likely you are to get your money back if the government change travel advice?

wherearemychickens · 25/02/2020 07:04

We have a holiday in Europe booked in May and I am leaving it for now, although so far I've only paid the deposit.

bellinisurge · 25/02/2020 07:05

Popping in to thank the op. And to remind everyone (I'm a prepper nerd, I watch all the nerds on YouTube) that masks have limited usefulness. They remind you not to touch your face and keep people at a distance from physical contact.
Please don't get obsessed about having them if you are short of cash. Focus on good hand hygiene and building up an extra stock of bits at home. Also have tissues on hand. A lot of them.

wherearemychickens · 25/02/2020 07:06

Has this kicked anyone onto gear setting up wills and powers of attorney? We already had the former set up but I'm now working on the latter. Sensible idea anyway, given what I've just seen a colleague go through with a relative.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/02/2020 07:19

We've got a holiday booked in Northern Italy in June - cycling from the Dolomites to Venice. I figure that by then Covid-19 will be widespread everywhere so there won't be restricted areas as we will have passed that point, or it will have died down a bit like Swineflu did.

Twixes · 25/02/2020 07:21

I went to an Asian market yesterday and got a big bag of jasmine rice, large fish sauce, large soy sauce, sesame oil and oyster sauce. Simple, tasty meals and easily be rustled up with these ingredients.

Good time to learn how to make sourdough bread?

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 07:33

bellinisurge is right. The aim of prepping for a pandemic is the prep to stay home so masks are not essential.
If you can grab a couple, then great but if not don't worry. Food is more important.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 07:40

But most people cannot stay at home indefinitely. Even if you simply need to go out for more essential supplies.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 25/02/2020 07:44

None of my friends or family seem worried about CV.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 25/02/2020 07:45

... I'll put a few things by regardless.

Zorona · 25/02/2020 07:48

There is an ffp3 mask on amazon but it’s difficult to tell if it is a fake don’t want to spend £15 on something that doesn’t comply with regulations.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 07:48

I would assume Hasa that there would be provisions for masks if we ever ended up like china. Do we know how they are getting theirs? I have just 4 and have 10 on order but if I only had money for food I would choose that first.

Mrsemcgregor · 25/02/2020 07:49

Matt Hancock on BBC Breakfast just advised self isolation for those returning from Northern Italy.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 07:53

NOW: Kuwait confirms 3 new cases, total of 8 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 07:56

Wickes are still showing disposable FFP3 masks and the reusable ones available in many areas for click and collect.

AvocadoOwl · 25/02/2020 07:57

My husband flies to Zurich for a work conference/training thing tomorrow. I know there aren't any cases in Switzerland yet but I can't say I'm overjoyed about him going regardless, especially as there are people from lots of other countries going to the same event. Not much that can be done though, he's not phased and even if he was it wouldn't be reasonable of him to refuse to go.

preponderings · 25/02/2020 07:59

Random musings. What would you do if a family member (e.g. IL's, GP's or even OH) was hospitalised with it? Would you visit?

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 08:00

Surely you wouldnt' be allowed to. They'd be in quarantine.
