Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Italy now added to the list of countries where travellers will be asked to self isolate if they develop any symptoms.

echobench · 25/02/2020 00:34

Just popping on to place mark.

I’ve added some jars of “vegetable salad” to my stash. It’s from the Polish section in Sainsbury’s. Basically shredded vegetables in vinegar. Quite nice.

Ibloodylovewomen · 25/02/2020 00:35

How much are you all changing your day to day life? We're still out and about, kids still going to activities, DH still heading into the city every day Confused, we've got a wedding in a couple of weeks, and I'm wondering at what point to start pulling back where we can.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 25/02/2020 00:56

Thank you for this thread, having been trying to not think too much about it, I think it’s sensible to go to Costco tomorrow.

We live fairly rural, so can avoid towns a bit, but we’ve got tickets for a show in London for Saturday - had them months - and dd is so excited. What was going to be a lovely day out on the train, is starting to worry me, we need to use the underground. Dd has an autoimmune condition, so gets a flu jab each year, am I silly to worry?

LeGrandBleu · 25/02/2020 01:04

No need to change habits yet. Take precautions. So wear plastic gloves or any gloves on public transport because they will prevent you from touching your face. Have a bottle of sanitizer in your bag and rub your hand regularly. Have your husband sit between you and your DD.

London is fairly safe. All the discussions you see here are for when there is a uk outbreak. I was a the Queen’s concert in Sydney. It was packed and we had to queue one of top of the others on the ramps while waiting for the rain to stop. It didn’t for one second worry me. All the prepping is be ready for worst case scenario to avoid last minute panic buy.

There is no outbreak in the UK. Enjoy the show.

Delurking to say that I'm surprised the thread hasn't been renamed "Preparing for a Pandemic Public Health Emergency of International Concern" yet Wink

Also hoping the Veneto family are OK Flowers

I started prepping when this virus first emerged (studied infectious diseases as part of my degree and didn't like the sound of it), and my family thought I was crazy. Thanks to the news coverage, that hasn't changed. I'm concerned in particular for my mother who is still working in the NHS.

@FourTeaFallOut

Personally I’m much better at the ‘I’m not asking, I’m telling’. Or ‘Good boys get sweeties/stickers/effective small bribe’

YOU: I know, usually I am, but bless him, he has dry hands because I won the war on thorough hand washing and it's quite sweet watching him sleep

Sorry. I hope you know what I meant was that I am usually better at ‘telling OR ‘bribing than I am pandering. I just don’t have too much patience for being told ‘no’ 🙄🤣

I certainly didn’t mean I’m better than you!🌷

But yes, they are very cute when there’re sleeping!and any excuse for a bit of a hand hold 😊

LeGrandBleu · 25/02/2020 02:09

I believe this video sums up the aim of the preppers.
www.theguardian.com/world/video/2020/feb/24/coronavirus-enormous-queues-for-masks-in-south-korea-video

Infinite queues we have already seen in Hong Kong just to buy masks. Have them in the house, and you won't stress about not getting one. Have enough food/household stuff (loo paper) and you won't stress if your local supermarket shelves are empty on the day you go as it happened in Italy.

An Asian country might sound somehow alien to us, belonging to another part of the world. Italy is on our, well your as I am in Oz, doorstep. What happened there could have happened in any small village.

On a more practical note, I haven't seen anyone mentioned egg replacer (apologies if someone did). I follow a plant based diet but I love baking and egg replacer powder is so easy to use and nobody can guess . So for the serious bakers, consider olive oil ( a couple vanilla essence drops will cover the taste) and egg replacer , if you can't put your hands on butter and eggs. You can make delicious fruit loaf, the Belgian Cramique bread, biscuits, the Italian crostata with jam, and so on.... I don't really like the typical 'Vegan" baking, lots of dates and coconut . Any normal recipe can be adjusted using egg replacer and olive oil.
I wouldn't however use egg replacer for an omelette.

Wombatstew · 25/02/2020 03:04

@LeGrandeBleu
Would you mind telling me which masks you got please? I was think of buying some from Bunnings and if I don't end up using them I will return them, thanks

Dennisreynoldsduster · 25/02/2020 03:41

I don’t much like those stats @ofwarren where are they from?
61% dying within 28 Days?!

Dennisreynoldsduster · 25/02/2020 03:43

Someone linked the reusable masks for me in the last thread hasa I think and I can’t bloody find the link now! Not that they’ll be likely to be in stock mind...

Dennisreynoldsduster · 25/02/2020 03:49

Sorry for the multiple posts - terrible etiquette- but WHO are saying that the virus has peaked in China

I’m surprised at the sniffy attitude to UHT milk some have here. We switched to it back in the 90s when CJD was around. If I thought it horrible back then I can’t remember it now. We drink semi-skimmed by the glass now and it seems fine to me. Plus we have always bought a month’s supply so no issues with running out all the time like with fresh.

Try it, you’ll get used to it!

LeGrandBleu · 25/02/2020 03:56

Dunn also makes paper masks with no protection at all so be careful about the one you buy. The no protection paper ones come in a pack of 10, the one you want must have FFP1 written on the mask.
I also bought the Dunn safety goggles for $4 each.

BambooBoobam · 25/02/2020 04:10

I think it’s FFP3 masks that offer protection and not FFP1.

LeGrandBleu · 25/02/2020 04:28

@ BambooBoobam read my previous post further up on the different grades of masks and their efficacy vs surgical mask.
Scroll up

LeGrandBleu · 25/02/2020 04:31

Of course FFP3 is the very best 99% protection, then comes FFP2 with 94%, but the basic FFP1 still offers 80% protection and in condition of shortage and given you change them every day, they are a good option, especially compared to surgical masks

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/02/2020 04:38

I remember the Swine Flu outbreak. None of us got it, thank goodness, but a couple of friends did. I don't remember any instructions about self-isolating or quarantine. Why is it different this time?

Dennisreynoldsduster · 25/02/2020 04:50

@LeGrandBleu masks listed as P3, is that short of ffp3 or something different?

magicrainbowbeans · 25/02/2020 04:55

Hi everyone,

I have quite severe anxiety. Not taking any medication for it and that might be just as well if at some point I can't get hold of any. I find home exercise works just as well if the high impact type on a regular basis. When I can motivate myself to do it...

Am a natural prepper. I don't meal plan, can eat very random non - meals and used to camping. My DD is the same. She prefers a bowl of plain pasta or couscous to anything with sauce a lot of the time. But is a pudding fiend. We have a reasonable store but another delivery arriving today, I've ordered around £150 in tins, Uht milk, stuff we will use anyway. Very limited freezer space or I'd store more that way. Tiny house, so nowhere to put another freezer.

We live in a semi rural location and don't have a lot of social gatherings, the main times we come into contact with other people are work, school and kids clubs. I work in a city with people who are always hopping on and off planes, so that's probably our highest risk factor.

Immunity wise I think we are strong. I am the world's worst home cleaner and DD arms to have grown up with a stonking good immune system. Hadn't had a day off school yet, we each get a sniffle maybe once per year. But I don't want to tempt fate by saying COVID will never affect us.

We have no hand sanitiser, no masks so far. I have a box of transparent surgical gloves from years ago at the back of a cupboard.

LeGrandBleu · 25/02/2020 04:57

P3 is the abbreviation of FFP3 which stands for Filtering face piece.
Europe uses the raging with FFP the USA the N where the N stands for NIOsh ( a testing category)

LeGrandBleu · 25/02/2020 04:57

Rather the rating and not raging!

Dennisreynoldsduster · 25/02/2020 04:59

Thank you @legrandbieu I’m undecided about ordering a mask for me and DH. Baby DS obviously wouldn’t be able to hVe a mask but if things got bad I just wouldn’t take him out.

In terms of tinned veg, what’s everyone got? I keep going to get some but have never used it. I might chop and freeze fresh like broccoli etc, but would feel happier with some tins as well and can always donate to food bank if I don’t use them.

Got plenty of nuts and nut butters now and am going to stock up on Aldi bread mix as well tomorrow - it’s lovely, even when not prepping!
