Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

I don't think you would be allowed to!

AvocadoOwl · 25/02/2020 08:03

Bit concerned that we haven't heard from @VenetoResident since yesterday morning. I really hope they are all doing ok.

This is a good article I haven't seen posted here yet

I have lots of porridge oats for breakfast. It can be made with water (although nicer with milk) and add golden syrup for flavour. Is a good breakfast for kids

NannyGoatC · 25/02/2020 08:19

Thanks for the Wickes link HasaDig. I have managed to get some on click and collect. Of to get now. They are out of stock in lots of places - anyone near Farnborough 3 left.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 08:20

I ordered my masks 4 days ago from wicks. They accepted the order. Hopefully they will come.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 25/02/2020 08:28

Couple of points:

Eggs- I did a cost comparison and powdered egg may be cheaper than eggs overall depending upon where you buy from. Also takes up less space.
I know I asked about soup yesterday but didn’t get a response- I think the large tubs of powder will take up less space than tins and work out cheaper per portion.
Cambridge Masks - really want one but delivery now late April I think. Anyone seen anything similar?
Good article @wherearemychickens thank you for sharing

@venetoresident thinking of you all. Hope you are all ok

Aside from other nations not wanting us around, a desire for domestic boundaries are also emerging.

Basilicata yesterday announced it wanted people from the North to submit to 2 weeks quarantine if they tried to enter the region. Campania also made some noises about not being overly keen about any of us going down there.

Have to wait and see if today's news exacerbates the historical North/South tension (which has reduced a lot since the late 90s). First case in Sicilia, unfortunately it's a tourist from Bergamo. So anti North feeling could tick up. Supermarkets in Sicilia experienced some bare shelves.

There's also a case confirmed in Florence.

No new cases in my town so far. The company the officially confirmed case works for has shut, but also announced he didn't infected anybody else in the firm. Which includes my student. So that's good news personally and for both my town and the one next door where the factory is.

If you want some non shop based prep to do, start pruning your SM now. Nothing like an unprecedented crisis to turn the local "can be a bit of an arsehole occasionally" people into "Hectoring Arsehole 24/7".

It was worse for my shocked emotional state than I realised. Feel much much better after some chopping away to improve the stream of posts. Local SM has been really helpful in terms of detailed information, but I do better when it's not rammed with huge numbers of finger wagging lectures about how everybody else is doing the crisis wrong. I know it's just their way of managing their stress, we'll still be friends afterwards. But for now I need the volume turned right down on it.

LittleSwede · 25/02/2020 08:37

Another one thinking about Veneto, hour you are all ok.

Re sourdough bread (mentioned upthread), DH has a sourdough starter in the fridge and makes bread most weekends. It's s good idea I think, it takes a bit if looking after but not as much as his earlier experiments with kefir!

NameChangeQuestion · 25/02/2020 08:57

Hi, can I ask a quick question for anyone who might know? FFA2P3 - is that a P2 or P3 mask? Not 100% sure with the two numbers being in there.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 09:01

Been in to school again this morning. The head said they had seen the news about Italy and had a staff meeting. A group text is going out to all parents.
They have also changed a few more procedures regarding snack time.
I'm so fortunate to have a great headteacher.

NameChangeQuestion · 25/02/2020 09:04

Oops I just posted on the old thread 🤦🏼‍♀️
Just wanted to say hi and thanks for these threads. Been lurking for the past few and it’s really helping. I’m struggling at the moment to decide on which masks to buy. It’s so overwhelming with all the different ones. If anyone bought theirs from screwfix which did you go for? I’m going to be near one today so hoping to choose something by then!

Radio 5live discussion on now.

NewYearNewTwatName · 25/02/2020 09:21

ofwarren I have an acquaintance in China.

in January they said one person from each household had to go out to pick up a ticket for a set amount of masks, depending on how many people in the lived there. Then picked the masks up from another place. There were 5 in there household they were given 10 masks.

I don't know how often they issue more, or if they do.

lemonjumper · 25/02/2020 09:23

Interesting alternative to masks, seen on the Sky News article (about halfway down)?? Kids with cut open plastic bottles across their faces.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 09:24

Ah right thank you NewYear I thought there must have been a system of sorts. They don't last long those surgical masks.

AmelieTaylor · 25/02/2020 09:24

@MrFumble

You seem to have lost your way. This thread is in the Prep section. - youmight be best to post on threads not in the Prep section if you’re going to dis the concept of being aware and prepared. You feel free to be one of the ones scanning empty shelves complaining there’s nothing there IF it does hit here 🤷🏻‍♀️

@TipseyTorvey. I don’t know what your personal situation is with alcohol. I guess if you have a serious problem you could plan to quit if you end up one ‘lock down’

I don’t have a problem with alcohol (unless you listen to the ‘half a sweet sherry at Christmas - you need AA’ mob in here!

I have plenty wine & other stuff. I don’t know if I’ll drink any of it if we’re locked in, but probably because I won’t have to bloody well drive anywhere!

I don’t drink that often or that much these days, but along with pretty much everything else in life, I like to have the option so I have wine along with chocolate, wool, paint for decirating, jigsaws, books & other stuff that I mught want, if we are asked to stay at home.

& I have all the symptom soothers i might want!

I might get an assortment of mixers in so we can do something with the ‘weird assortment of bottles at the back* 🤣🤣

BREAKING: 1st case of #coronavirus in #Sicily, #italy. (#COVID19italia, #COVID2019)

AmelieTaylor · 25/02/2020 09:30

@Givemeabreakpls

To put my cards on the table - I’ve never fancied a cruise. Lots of reasons.

However wild horses couldn’t drag me into one now, not even if I won one. Too many people in a confined area all touching everything and having the audacity to breathe😳.

That’s without the worry about what the DP people went through.

I’d get the deposit back, but even if I had to forgo it, I’d rather do that.

That made me properly belly laugh for the first time in many days, so thank you for that.

I realised lying awake in bed last night how stressed and unhappy I feel all the time, low level in the background but just a kind of miserable tension. It's not just this, there are other factors many of them to do with the state of the world. But it's insidious the way that kind of nervous tension creeps up on you.
Must remember to watch more comedy box sets.
