Prepping for a pandemic...6

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

My husband thinks I am crazy but I have prepped the basics for 24 days and I am adding the finishing touches this week. I have a chronic illness and my immune system is shit anyway. I’ve had pneumonia numerous times and I always catch whatever is going around. So I have a vogmask (N99) and a bioscarf (N95) already which I wear on flights etc but I am going to start wearing it daily during my commute (screw what people think).

Kuwait just stopped flights to and from Italy

Twixes · 24/02/2020 21:10

Does anyone have any simple bread recipes? or decent bread mixes that involve little work, i.e. kneading etc.

AutumnCrow · 24/02/2020 21:13

the weird things at the back of the drink cabinet

I just found an ancient bottle of Galliano and another one of Grenadine. They look fine. Probably all the sugar.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 24/02/2020 21:14

This is all getting very real.

planningaheadtoday · 24/02/2020 21:15

@Twixes
I'll find mine in a moment.

Whilst I'm looking, best tip I've had is to activate the dried yeast with hot water and wait before adding to the mix. I've lost many a loaf in the past because my yeast was old or stored badly.

This way you can see the activity starting to bubble before you add to the flour and it results in less waste.

planningaheadtoday · 24/02/2020 21:23

@Twixes I use this one but swap out the butter for oil.

I just bought some bread mix, last til July and only need to add water! £1 so comparable to just buying a loaf

Notstrongandstable · 24/02/2020 21:32

Twixies...soda bread is sooo easy..zero faff re kneading and proving etc..I'm a fan of the HFW recipe for white soda with seeds on top...sorry not great with links etc!

Nanalisa60 · 24/02/2020 21:33

Well I’m going skiing in the Sella Ronda (Italy) in 12 days time!! I’m wondering if that’s going to happen now!!

GorkyMcPorky · 24/02/2020 21:45

Harry Chen's (@ischinar) Twitter account has been pulled Hmm

YoursTunbridgeWells · 24/02/2020 21:49

@LeGrandBleu That film Shock welding people into apartments so they can't get out, dead people on floors, all sorts of really nasty nasty stuff. The human rights aspects of this are horrific. I cannot imagine how terrifying it must be to be forcefully separated from loved ones knowing you may not see them again. It's all very easy to put that down to China's totalitarian regime but the Australian lady defended separation and isolsation from a disease control perspective.

Twixes · 24/02/2020 22:00

Thanks for the bread tips! Very useful.

I'm watching the Aussie docu, it's absolutely terrifying.

BatSegundo · 24/02/2020 22:08

LeGrandBleu You need to watch this

I really, really don't. Sad I think it might just send me over the edge...

FelicityFebruary · 24/02/2020 22:09

Look for "no knead" recipes online. The dough gets left longer often overnight.

EliK · 24/02/2020 22:11

I really, really don't.I think it might just send me over the edge...
Me too.

MrFumble · 24/02/2020 22:11

The World Health Organization has warned against a global overreaction to the new coronavirus epidemic. WHO stressed the disease has infected a “tiny” proportion of people outside its epicenter and the mortality rate remains relatively low'.

Calm down. Relax. Read about some other news for balance.

Virus in Tenerife!

BREAKING: #SPAIN-#coronavirus: An Italian doctor who was on vacation in the south of #Tenerife has tested positive for coronavirus after going to a private clinic because he was feeling ill

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/02/2020 22:15

I think thats some extremely selective reporting of what the WHO has said MrFumble

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 22:19

On the other thread in AIBU a poster's DF has recently come back from Northern Italy - has all of the standard CV symptoms (dry cough, fever, etc).

Rang 111 and they said "Italy isn't on our list of countries" and were not helpful.

Moral of the story: you can't have confirmed cases if you don't test for them

If you find Dr John Campbell as confidence inspiring as I do but are also feeling slightly stressed today you might enjoy his broccoli soup video from a year ago.

It will make you smile, teach you loads about nutrition and possibly inspire you to make some non boring soup to freeze or enjoy.

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 22:21

...and a post from a healthcare worker on MN.

"Nc for this, but as someone who has recently been involved in caring for a severely ill patient who was being tested for Covid-19, I was appalled by the behaviour of some of my colleagues to PPE. Fit-tested masks pulled off to speak, touching faces, no eye protection, not always using gloves when touching bed linen etc etc. Yes, this patient was thought to be relatively low-risk of actually having the disease, but sooner or later someone is going to have the disease unexpectedly. I have zero confidence of the virus being contained in that situation now."

OfftoPenscome. My DD has Arla UHT milk at work, she says it tastes like real milk and has it on cereal. I tried finding it online, but no luck here, maybe someone else might have better luck?
She did say she could get some if I wanted, but I decided it wasn’t worth her getting sacked for a few pints of milk 😂

Just a suggestion for being able to store fruit, especially for kids who might not like tinned. I used to make individual apple crumbles for DD when she was little. I would use eating apples as they are sweeter so I didn't need to add any sugar and top with crumbled up biscuit (I used to use toddler biscuits, but digestives would work well). You could do this with pears, berries etc. Where they're in individual ramekins they're easy to store once you've frozen them flat.

Legoandloldolls · 24/02/2020 22:33

Such strange mixed messages about 111 and Italy, Who's pandemic stance too.

Nothing to see here.... move along...

In the meantime I almost got lost in my stash of prep stuff. Couldn't find what I needed! I need a system in place. I will do that tomorrow. My youngest has a downstairs bedroom she never uses ( tiny office but fits her wardrobe and draws and a cot bed) I have left my prep in there as our kitchen is tiny. So I'm going to do a inventory ( dried pasta, pasta sauce, rice, soup that's mainly in there).

I'm.still planning on putting most of it under the bunk bed. Must check under there for cheesy socks first!

It's a good distraction it nothing else! I'm not sure anymore if I should be freaking out or totally unphased. Maybe that's the master plan?
