Prepping for a pandemic...6

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

"Coronavirus: World must prepare for pandemic, says WHO."

I study in Europe near Germany. My mother is worried about me travelling back to England over the weekend (for a concert) in 10 days and the border being closed whilst I'm in London.

Who knows what will happen in 10 days time.I would lose maybe £70 in flights if I didn't turn up.

I went to a medical shop that supplies my teaching hospital and I bought the last of the 7 surgical masks they had for a reasonable price (around £1.28 for 7). The woman told me they had completely run out .

Dennisreynoldsduster · 24/02/2020 20:20

I’m confused about masks. There were some
Mentioned on here before that last a month before you need to change filters. But I couldn’t see where to get the filters from, I’m probably being blind! I actually need some for some
DIY we are doing so thought they would be a good buy if I could get them still as I could use a filter for the DIY then have some extra filters Incase TSHTF.

Orangecake123 · 24/02/2020 20:22

The filters need to be changed if you buy the non disposable ones. If you have a look at Wicks I think they had them on the same page.

ifonly4 · 24/02/2020 20:27

Elik tinned chickpeas work well in curry with whatever veg you have, also providing some protein.

AdaColeman · 24/02/2020 20:30

FelicityFebruary · 24/02/2020 20:32

Are you selling those Ada?!

aliasname · 24/02/2020 20:41

Why has the number of cases in China gone down? Does this mean the virus is going to naturally fizzle out? Or is it a change in the way they report statistics?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2020 20:42

So I guess in terms of outbreaks following half term, we would be looking at about 4 weeks before people were unwell enough to be noticed?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2020 20:43

I've still got two butternut squash intact from last Spring. I'm too scared to cut into them.

AmelieTaylor · 24/02/2020 20:44

@FourTeaFallOut

Sorry my earlier message doesn’t seem to have posted Yep looks like you’ll have to keep doing the 🧚🏼‍♂️ Thing. Personally I’m much better at the ‘I’m not asking, I’m telling’. Or ‘Good boys get sweeties/stickers/effective small bribe’

Re the laundry. 🤣 if it comes to soaking all the laundry, getting CV will be inevitable. I bought some & I’m planning on using it for hand towels. That’s it. Unless there’s a specific reason I think something has a very high chance of having it - though for the life of me cannot think what. IF we were to get a local breakout I might put ‘outside’ clothes in a soak & hold in the machine. Maybe.

@preponderings

Nothing intelligent to add..

Doesn’t stop the rest of us 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

@wheresmymojo. I only vaguely remember swine flu. I remember the young couple & crying a lot about the chickens getting shovelled semi alive in to bags. . I clearly wasn’t overly worried about getting it as I flew back & forth to NZ that year. A few major personal things going on that year though, so 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t think this is anything like that though.

@oliphant Soup IS GOING to be the ‘exciting’ option.

Plus last night's dinner leftovers is a possibility

I’m not entirely sure I’m going to want ‘dinner’ - let alone left overs for lunch🤣 I’m
realky going to have to seriously think about getting the fridge /freezer

TipseyTorvey · 24/02/2020 20:47

I realised today that my wine supply is woefully low. I'm not sure if I should deliberately not stock up to wean me off it, or if it should be my main priority lest I end up drinking the weird things at the back of the drink cabinet.

Twixes · 24/02/2020 20:48

I'm guessing the number of cases have gone down in China because pretty much the whole country has been in quarantine for a month.

Some businesses were re-opening in Shanghai today and I believe their plan is to see how things go. If the numbers go up again they may decide to reinforce quarantine.

I also heard the military have completely surrounded the province of Hubei so no one has been able to get in or out. Again, that's unverified so it may not be true.

Legoandloldolls · 24/02/2020 20:51

I wonder if the numbers in China have gone down due to the lockdown? As they are lifted the numbers might go up again?

I guess there are so many reasons why some people catch bugs and others dont. A lot is genetics, some people are just better at fighting off some things.

Anecdotally my friend anti bacs thecshit out of everything. Everything is sterile. Her kids are always I'll and always have been. My eldest was early and weedy due to me having pre eclampsia. He was continually very sick for three years ( three suspected case of meningitis no less required hospitalisation) but since about 4 he never gets ill. So I do believe there is environmental immunity at play. However a good immune system can be bad news in past epidemics as said up thread, your body in those scenarios caused the worse side effects.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2020 20:52

Personally I’m much better at the ‘I’m not asking, I’m telling’. Or ‘Good boys get sweeties/stickers/effective small bribe’

I know, usually I am, but bless him, he has dry hands because I won the war on thorough hand washing and it's quite sweet watching him sleep.

NEW: Kuwait reports 2 new cases of coronavirus, just hours after reporting the first 3 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Givemeabreakpls · 24/02/2020 20:53

OT (sorry) but I’m due to go on a cruise with my family in April - not paid for it yet apart from the deposit. Does anyone know where we stand with travel insurance if the outbreak gets worse? We don’t know whether to cancel or not, we’d rather lose the deposit than £1000s if there’s an issue closer to the time?

SlayB · 24/02/2020 20:54

Hi all,

I've been dipping into the stock this week due to the floods stopping us getting out & about. So I was lucky to have a well stocked freezer.

So it was a mini practice run. I run out of milk at an alarming rate also biscuits and cheese.

Does anyone know if stock pile meal plans exist so I can try to be better prepared ?

I finally received my Clinell Antimicrobial Hand Wipes after being out of stock so long. I have those plus gel and wipes it that enough ?

Twixes · 24/02/2020 20:55

This is an interesting article from Bloomberg on factory closures etc.

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-23/china-is-pushing-factories-to-resume-even-as-death-toll-rises .

LeGrandBleu · 24/02/2020 20:55

You need to watch this. I am watching it right now, it is a special "Four corners" Australian ABC program.
Four corners is an investigative journalism program here in Australia , highly regarded and never shy to tell the truth and yesterday's show about coronavirus is available on Youtube

The videos of people being brutally dragged out of houses, of hospital so full they can accept any more people, medical staff breaking down , office welding doors shut so people can't get out! How the numbers from China are artificially low, footage of patients waiting to be seen with dead bodies at their feet!!

Just in case, somebody still thinks it is normal flu!

OfftoPenscome · 24/02/2020 20:56

Have been reading for a while but first time posting.

I went through my freezer and cupboards today and worked out a 14 day menu and what I would need to buy and freeze to do it.

Am planning on stocking up this week and also cutting up fresh veg and freezing veg this week.

We will use it all anyway so nothing will be wasted.

Biggest issue is finding room to freeze milk but we are big milk drinkers and don’t fancy the thought of no milk for 2 weeks.

Have never made bread so may have a go this weekend.

I live in a European City with a very international population. Lots
Of people just back from the Italian and French alps after half term ski trips.

Ds told me 2 of his classmates were skiing in Italy last week!

This has pushed me to start prepping.

cross-post @legoandloldolls

Legoandloldolls · 24/02/2020 20:57

lest I end up drinking the weird things at the back of the drink cabinet.
It might be a good idea in a emergency. Some of the weird drinks I bought on various holidays almost made me go blind ( whennrather already drunk it seemed like a good idea at the time) I might help kills off viruses in the blood too? 😆

OfftoPenscome · 24/02/2020 20:58

All of our household tested positive for swine flu in 2009z Worst chest infection I ever had. Hurt in my chest to just drink water!
Don’t fancy experiencing that again. We were all very miserable.
