Prepping for a pandemic...6

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Clearly not being around people is better but most of us have to go out.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 09:58

Thinking of VenetoResident this am.

She had mentioned sheets when in fever. I have realised I have NO spare doubles anymore. I wash and replace in a day, which is fine when you are all well..

Note to self: you can take decluttering and failing to replace a bit too far!

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 10:00

I saw my first person wearing a surgical face mask out and about yesterday.

pemberlyshades · 26/02/2020 10:02

I don't think you can OD On too many vitamins- I think your body just passes the excess. However your body can't "store" vitamin (C?) so it's better to have little and often.
Also you can't absorb vitamin c very well without zinc, so make sure that you are taking both in combination. You don't need much zinc though and as it's not a vitamin, I think your body can store it?! Any medical bods out there who can give more detail/correct me?!

pemberlyshades · 26/02/2020 10:03

@FelicityFebruary I'm going to put my big girl pants on and wear one to London tomorrow. Quite nervous about wearing it to be honest!

So thank you to everyone and welcome to any new people or lurkers, please do post and join in if you're lurking!

Taking up the invitation and de-lurking. I was an infrequent but enthusiastic poster on the Brexit prepping boards and have been following these threads as much as possible but have been behind the game too much to post anything useful. Thank you all for the information and moral support - it’s been invaluable. DH is older than me (In his sixties) and has a number of underlying health issues including Parkinson’s and mild coronary disease and has recently developed some respiratory problems (great timing Mr Babooshka🙄). I gave up work a couple of years ago to care for him so we’re luckier than some in that we can stay at home if need be. However, he has a number of routine hospital appointments coming up over the next couple of months and I’m wondering whether it’s safer to postpone. I imagine if TSHTF non urgent appointments would be cancelled anyway but I’m worried about the period where U.K. cases of CV are largely invisible. On the other hand I don’t want to mess the NHS around by cancelling unnecessarily...

Is it the original oatly barista milk that has a long shelf life does anyone know?

I bought some own brand oat milk from my local supermarket yesterday- it's is dated until the 17th december 2020 so it might not just be Oatly with long shelf life.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 10:18

I bought some temporary filling material from Amazon the other day. I have dodgy teeth and it would be a disaster if a filling fell out while in lock down! It says it's the same stuff the dentist uses and it was only about £8 for 2 tubs.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 10:20

You can definitely overdose on vitamin d and zinc. Please stick to safe amounts.

I've added some more dried marrow fat peas to my shopping list. If you soak them for a few hours, you can then sprout them in a little potting compost. Snip the sprouts as though you are cutting a lawn. Really tasty posh pea sprouts :)

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 10:21

You can overdose on vitamin A. Can cause liver failure.

lemonjumper · 26/02/2020 10:32

Too much vitamin c causes nasty symptoms too

"Taking large amounts (more than 1,000mg per day) of vitamin C can cause:

stomach pain
diarrhoea
flatulence
These symptoms should disappear once you stop taking vitamin C supplements."

Righty oh then- please ignore my post below- BlushGrin

Re the ABU thread. I have multiple tabs open so I can stay on the right page for each topic. Today I'm stuffing tins and loo roll under the bunk bed.

A solar power bank or two is a excellent idea so I'm going to source those today ( thinking about the sports hall isolation in China- no plugs!)

I'm going to ask my nearest and dearest if they are stocked up. Also I'm going to BREATH as now MIL is worried I'm getting worried.

I want to remember that I cant stress over what I cant control. I have food ( more important for a family of six as it's got me thinking that in panic buying situation people might think I'm hogging every thing where as we normally use 7 pasta jars, 2-3kg of pasta and six lofts in a week. I would rather top that up now before eyes are on my trolley.

So with that in mind I am ok, I'm sorted. I'm going to enjoy some sun and meet a friend for lunch and just post my under bed food cupboard then I'm off for a little bit.

VivaLeBeaver · 26/02/2020 10:40

I have plenty of food in the house, though might go and get long life milk.

Also planning to buy hand gel.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/02/2020 10:41

@RhodaCamel

Try Brexit Cupboard- non food essentials on Brexit board.

Try the let's share what food we bought on this board.

There is s good post on an earlier thread ( maybe four or two, definitely not three,I checked that) with pandemic specific stuff.

Legoandloldolls · 26/02/2020 10:45

Hopefully this shows ok. I have very shallow cucumber type cardboard boxes for under the bunk bed. I will cover each with a bin bag.

There is a strange whiff in the kids room so I must make sure it's not a bio hazard it itself before storing under it!

I read you can overdose on vitamins, mine are just cheap low dose ones except the b12 and folic acid I was prescribed.
That story of the little boy and grandfather is awful Sad

QueSera · 26/02/2020 10:51

I really like the 'updates' - please keep them in this thread! As a prepper, keeping on top of the developing situation is part and parcel of prepping!

BlackeyedSusan · 26/02/2020 10:52

@LightofMine I was going to get the hump as I have mentioned ice pops but then remembered not on here but definitely on the food thread. Blush Grin

EliK · 26/02/2020 10:53

Slight update for those of us in Scotland. Still 0 cases but they expect an outbreak.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/02/2020 10:53

And jelly for poorly kids. The blocks take up less space.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 10:53

Lots didn't want them in here @QueSera
I agree that it helps with preparing, well it does to me.
I'm still doing it in the AIBU thread that is linked in here. Nobody in that thread is not on board with prepping. They are all following with interest.

applesandpears33 · 26/02/2020 11:00

I like the updates too. I've been watching these threads with interest. I've not been prepping as much as other people, but have started to buy more tins, pasta etc.

RhodaCamel · 26/02/2020 11:00

Thank you fearnot and blackeyed
