Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Thanks @ofwarren that's a good compromise. I follow both and feel the updates fit better there. Thank you for the work you put in, it is appreciated Smile

RhodaCamel · 26/02/2020 09:14

Is anyone able to put up a quick link of a basics prepping list, I can’t find much and all the US ones are overwhelming tbh!

Evidencebased · 26/02/2020 09:18

Thanks ofwarren .
Your sterling work is appreciated, that seems like a good decision.

LightofMine · 26/02/2020 09:18

I know we don't want to alarm our children any more than is necessary, but after reading of this horrific situation I think we should put a system in place and prepare our children if we get to a locked down stage.

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/26/china-child-found-home-alone-with-dead-grandfather-amid-coronavirus-lockdown

By prepare I mean in case the child might need to raise an alarm if you get sick.

Even if its just setting up a buddy system with a relative or friend to phone every day and make sure everything is well or teaching children how to use the phone to call a relative / 999 (remove passwords off phones / keep emergency number next to landline phone etc) or worst case how to leave the house to knock for a trusted neighbour to get help.

The same 'buddy' system could also be useful to neighbours / relatives who live alone to check in with each other.

I'm just so glad this boy was found and is now being cared for.

Tinnednut · 26/02/2020 09:19

We all have multivitamins including extra Calcium for those with allergies.
We have Marmite and Nutritional yeast for B12.
Plus I've scheduled 2 hours in the garden daily.

AmelieTaylor · 26/02/2020 09:20

@ofwarren

It has been great having you posting on the thread and updating. I’m sorry you feel you should no longer post your updates on here. I preferred just having the one thread where we discussed all aspects of COVID19. The other threads I find a bit bonkers tbh. There have been fabulous links to all kinds of information, reports & things like the John Campbell videos on here.

I understand some people get stressed about the updates, but I find them less stressful being included in the general chat but away from the ‘End is nigh’ V ‘’it’s only the flu’ type posts. I think discussing it with ‘like minded’ people, rather than the extremists was better.

But 🤷🏻‍♀️ You had to make a difficult decision & you have 🌷 I hope you still post here frequently as I’d like to know how you’re getting on.

Motorina · 26/02/2020 09:20

@ofwarren thank you for responding and for all your hard work :)

Just to reiterate, I don't doubt your integrity at all. I just like to see sources, particularly for new information in such a rapidly changing picture, where there is the potential for misinformation to seed panic.

Tinnednut · 26/02/2020 09:22

@lightofmine so tragic. We have an only child and no family near by I was thinking of asking a friend of they could take care of DD if both DH and I were hospitalised. And saying we would do the same for their DC in return.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 26/02/2020 09:23

I find the updates useful but I think prepping content is getting missed because there are so many updates. ofwarren is doing a sterling job collating them all but it does mean the threads are filling up faster than I can read them. Just my opinion.

I’ve organised most of my stash but I have two cardboard boxes that are completely full of random things, as you can see, so I’m hoping baby DS is going to nap so I can sort through

With regards to cheese, if you freeze a block what’s the deal when you defrost it? Do you have to use it all at once? Is it better to freeze smaller
Blocks?

South Korea says 20,716 people are currently being tested for coronavirus, up from 16,734 this morning. Many of them are being tested as a precaution*

Are you still going to be posting this kind if information? (I hope so) and if so, where?

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 09:24

Just a quick one while people are talking about kids. Sky news breaking in Italy that 4 cases in Lombardy are children. I'm just on the bus at the minute if anyone else is interested in looking it up

Dennisreynoldsduster · 26/02/2020 09:24

My messy picture didn’t load! This is the tail end of my stash - most packed away nicely.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 09:24

Yes there is a post on AIBU called something like AIBU to be worried about the coronavirus

Motorina · 26/02/2020 09:25

Cheese freezes really well grated, and you can use it directly from frozen that way. It does take up more space, though.

Alternatively, I would cut down and freeze in pieces, so you only defrost what you need. The size of the pieces will depend on how much cheese you can use in one go ;)

Dennisreynoldsduster · 26/02/2020 09:25

That’s so upsetting lightofmine ds is only ten weeks old and my biggest anxiety is around me and DH getting sick and not being able to look after him, or DH getting stuck in quarantine somewhere

LightofMine · 26/02/2020 09:30

I have just been going through my stocks and found 'ice pops', I haven't seen them mentioned on here yet, but they may be good to keep handy especially for symptoms of a sore throat or just as a sweet treat. They are cheap, have a long shelf life and you can just freeze them as and when needed.

Also baby type food / fruit puree pots as a means of getting one of your 5 a day if you cant get fresh fruit (although watch sugar), again they have a long shelf life and Aldi and Lidl do a pack of 4 pots for £1.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 09:32

For those who would like to keep following OfWarren's hard work
the thread is www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3831558-to-be-worried-about-coronavirus-part-4

It's not at all an extremist thread, it's very reasonable.

OfWarren Flowers thank you :)

AmelieTaylor · 26/02/2020 09:33

@whereareyousleep

🌷that must be extremely worrying for you
Are you alright? (You know, as ‘alright’ as you can be)

I think Italy is going to have been its Gateway to Europe, but I think it could have been anywhere in Europe it’s just their bad luck, I think. It could just have easily been us and they, at least, are trying to contain it now they know about it. I think Britain would be FAR less efficient in doing so.

Bastard thing being contagious for so bloody long with NO symptoms. Sneaky little shit. It’s a shame we can’t emit some kind of coloured spray once we contract it- that would be handy!

Legoandloldolls · 26/02/2020 09:37

Primark and Aldi hand gel. Aldi was 49p I think? Primark is 75% and cheaper. They had hundreds in store so I bought one each for the kids. One said thanks and one scoffed 🙄

I have completed my shopping (apart from emergency last bits which I am keeping a list of what to buy on me so I don’t get distracted in the shop eg milk, yogurt, fresh produce) and also done a stocktake of my stuff... This is my first week off work since last August and it’s come at a useful time!

Focusing now on cleaning, tidying and disinfecting kitchen and bathroom.

Also going to start sprouting seeds as they are very tasty and extremely nutritious. And easy to grow!

CrapTVAddict · 26/02/2020 09:42

Regarding multivitamins can you take a multivitamin tablet which has Vit c in it and a vitamin c one as well? Or is that more than recommended dosage? Would it not be better to take a multi vitamin (containing vit c) than just vit C or am I missing something?

StuffedBird · 26/02/2020 09:48

You cannot overdose on vit C, you just pee out any surplus. I take a multivitamin with vit C in it and also a very high 1000mg dose tablet as well as I am recovering from hand surgery and CRPS complications.

Wheresthebeach · 26/02/2020 09:50

So I know they say facemasks don't make much of a difference...but is anyone planning to use them? We're asthmatic and I'm certainly feeling a bit scared.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 09:52

On alcohol hand sanitizer from Aldi, I had bought some small ones of the Lacura brand at over 70 %. Was in another store and looked at the Aloe Vera version and it was only in the 60s!

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 09:53

Nobody says facemasks don't make much of a difference apart from those who also say "its just the flu" and "it's fiiiiine"

Surgical paper face masks don't make much of a difference. DIY type ones do make a difference (but clearly not a guarantee). FFP2 and above.
