Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Had a call last night to say the nurse practitioner who we saw day before yesterday has been sent home after coming back from Italy and has started displaying symptoms getting more worrying now. I think Italy will be the main source of cases that will now show up in the uk it must have been running unchecked there for weeks.

I agree with PP regarding having updates on Aibu thread and not here, prepping is a calm and grounding activity for many of us.
I am already following Reddit and Twitter as well as both these threads, so apart from duplication it doesn't bother me in terms of impact but I do think prepping thread should focus on prepping. Also the updates take up a lot of posts!

Prepping for me today is going to be of the domestic kind, I need to get my tip of a house in order and do a full clean so that general disinfecting and cleaning if we do get ill will be much easier. Also need to rearrange the stocks and do an inventory as its a bit haphazard at the moment. DH is onside but his DM passed away Monday so he isn't participating in the prepping, obviously.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 08:32

I'd be happy with that compromise WeBuilt :) We want this thread to be useful for those who should be prepping (all of us to a certain extent!). Prepping needs a cool, calm head and easily accessed information. If people like to see a lot of different info in one place then the AIBU thread could be a good place.

EliK · 26/02/2020 08:33

@GorkyMcPorky
I'm also worried about this. Our Scottish hospitals aren't any better.

GorkyMcPorky · 26/02/2020 08:33

Sorry @OhYouBadBadKitten. I was posting on the go, not very thoughtful of me.

Maybe if the updates just went on the AIBU thread then, instead of a third one?

GorkyMcPorky · 26/02/2020 08:33

Massive x-post.

GorkyMcPorky · 26/02/2020 08:34

@EliK I love in Wales and we don't even have a proper hospital 😭

EliK · 26/02/2020 08:34

Prepping for me today will include cleaning, organising and go bags! (In case we have to leave for any reason).

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2020 08:35

I am thing about buying a chest freezer. I'd never have needed one or wanted one before now. When I start thinking about the food we normally eat, most things can be frozen. And although I have plenty of tins in, I think things would be more normal and healthy for longer if I wasn't just limited to the fridge freezer. I might just be getting twitchy at this point.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 08:39

Just to add I do appreciate the huge amount of effort you are putting in OfWarren. People are finding your posts very valuable.

Motorina · 26/02/2020 08:40

I would prefer updates either on their own thread, or just on the AIBU thread. Reasons are:

  1. I'm getting them twice as I'm reading both threads. I suspect many people will be.
  2. The constant 'breaking' is disruptive to the flow of the discussion.
  3. There don't seem to be any links/sources, and I'm not sure where the information is coming from. Right now I think misinformation/unverified information is a real risk, and that concerns me. I'm not criticising OfWarren here or saying that there is any attempt to mislead at all - I am absolutely sure the info is shared in good faith - just that I like sources for my information.
OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 08:42

Flowers Gorky - I was very prickly. Sorry. Bad nights sleep. I should have taken some deep breaths rather than just snapping at you.

Tinnednut · 26/02/2020 08:51

I liked the updates here makes it easier plus the main point of prepping is to be fully informed of the developing situation.
Surely a ban on updates will also mean no discussion on the developing cases otherwise it's a bit pointless.

GarlicSoup · 26/02/2020 08:57

I think the updates are really useful. What about a separate updates thread if folks would prefer them to be kept separately?

Evidencebased · 26/02/2020 08:58

Totally agree with OhYouBadBadKitten
Updates are useful, but by definition, they are NOT prepping.
Ive got a lot of useful stuff from this topic ,it's really helped, so thanks to everyone.
But I too could do with just constructive prepping advice.

The frequent tiny shots of adrenaline are just making me more anxious. And grateful though I am for updates, I'd far rather they were on a different thread, where I can look at them when I choose. Also, bits of info on spread, scattered as they are through this thread, make getting a calmly assessed picture harder, not easier.
Of Warren you're doing a grand job, but we all know we can find your updates on ' Worrying ' thread.

I'm going to have to stop reading if there's incessant 'Breaking..' here.

AmelieTaylor · 26/02/2020 08:59

@wheresmymojo

Thank you for maintaining the threads, it really is appreciated! I can’t be done with the other MN CV threads (my blood pressure can’t take it) there’s such a good, balanced informed & informative bunch here!🌷

I’m collecting some masks from Screwfit this morning. I’ll let everyone know what I think when I get them home.

EliK · 26/02/2020 09:03

Can I ask what vitamins everyone's taking in preparation? My 7yo is taking just a standard children's multivitamin. I was already taking folic acid and b12 and I've now added a vit c + zinc supplement and vitamin d. Feels like a lot.

echobench · 26/02/2020 09:05

I’m on the fence re the “breaking” updates.

OH now saying that we should have a month’s worth of food in the house... that’s a lot for 6 people. Need to go through my stash systematically.

I’m so grateful for the thread and its prompts. Just bought spare batteries for the ear thermometer for example. Also wind-up radio and torch and solar powered battery pack. Not specifically CV related but good to have in the house.

Gammeldragz · 26/02/2020 09:08

We have multivitamin for adults and children plus an extra one with more vit d, zinc and magnesium, plus I have vit c fizzy ones. Probably overkill but better than nothing, anything we can do to support the immune system is good.

Grab bags, I know I said weeks ago I was going to make one for work and I still haven't done that so will add that to today's jobs.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 09:08

We have fish oil, a multivitamin and some additional vitamin D.

If your diet becomes a bit limited it's useful to know that you are getting everything you need.

RhodaCamel · 26/02/2020 09:09

Fourteafallout I was thinking the same. I’ve got lots of tinned stuff but want to stock up on frozen veg, fish and meat. I ordered one yesterday from Argos, it’s being delivered next week then I’ll have a delivery from Iceland and fill it up. When I was a kid lots of people had chest freezers in their garages with e tra stuff, just think it’s quite sensible at the best if times.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 09:09

Sorry, just been on school run.
I've decided to keep the posts to the AIBU thread where more people will see it. It is always in ACTIVE so you can find it there. The thread isn't actually an AIBU any more, it's just people discussing the virus.
As for worrying about my sources, the information is coming directly from news links in other countries. When cutting and pasting, it doesn't always give me the source link. If it's not there and you want yo see it, just ask and I'll get it. I will try to only include ones with a link that follows over.
Thanks for giving me the space and I'll keep following this thread.

Gammeldragz · 26/02/2020 09:10

Echobench Yes, thank you, batteries was another thing I meant to add to today's jobs. Need to check what the SATs monitor and thermometer take. Possibly AAAs, we usually have a stock of rechargeable ones.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 09:11

The shrink wrapped corn on the cobs are good (and cheap) and have a very long life on them.
