Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Yy to excersise, I started to do a little last night and Yy to risotto rice!!

Ocado delivery is in my opinion fabulous. I've only ever had a couple of substitutions... Can't even remember when they are so in frequent. They recycle the bags so give to you all broken up into cupboard, freezer etc and and have it sorted for you, may help the elderly??

You can do one off shops as long as over 40 pounds.

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 07:32

Maybe on this thread or over on aibu someone posted an excellent article which went into the knock on effects to the economy, the possibility of second wave of infections in China and the wider global impacts of lack of fuel, supply chains and so on.

Twixes · 26/02/2020 07:32

Thanks for the updates @ofwarren, I find them v useful

I got more stuff in last night; lots more coffee, biscuits, chicken breasts, more frozen veg, pet food and wine. I wasn't the only one prepping either. There was a woman with trolley full of loo roll, water, frozen veg and tinned food and there was a man looking for hand sanitizer but it was all sold out!

Other things for me to get are more meds, bread mix, more bicarbonate soda, buttermilk and freeze in portions, more spices, more tinned tomatoes. Payday tomorrow so I'll hold off until then, fingers crossed we don't go into lockdown before then

AvocadoOwl · 26/02/2020 07:33

Surely today must be the day that cases are uncovered in the UK.

Clearly there MUST be undetected cases here and if that's the situation I think the sooner they out in the open the better for everyone.

@ofwarren - thank you - I really appreciate your updates. These threads have been really helpful to me

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 07:51

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles I was one of these there with you petitioning MNHQ. Still think they should have let us call the topic "The Bunker" Angry Grin

I feel much calmer knowing we have the things we need if we have to stay at home for a bit. The updates are still concerning of course but being of a mindset where you immediately take note of potential disruptions/threats and start to be slightly on alert really helps. I've managed to get close friends and family on board too by gently encouraging them which also helps me, knowing they are well prepared. They laugh at me most of the time but they do as they are told trusting that I'm on top of what is going on.

This is a useful thread both in terms of updates and in terms of helping people to prepare. Our government is not likely to issue the same type of stark warnings that the CDC in America has issued. We need to think for ourselves a bit more. But if the Americans are being told to prepare for an emergency situation then clearly people here should be too, particularly since we are far less self sufficient as a country than America.

Galleyfm · 26/02/2020 07:51

@ofwarren I'm grateful for your updates, I don't post often but am reading both the the prepping and aibu threads regularly. Likewise Mojo for your updates, thank you.

NEW: Croatia reports 2nd case of coronavirus in man who went to Champions League match in Italy t.co/eUoE2b20hL

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 07:54

I think this is the second confirmed case at a football match in Italy...

Notmyideamovingon · 26/02/2020 07:58

Just thought yes I'll do all Ocado order good plan and the app isn't working for me arrgghh. Really don't want to go to Sainsburys (I keep getting locked out of their app for forgetting password and you have to ring someone to reset and I hate that)

It all feels just that bit closer. Half term seemed like a relief a chance for things to calm down cases to pop up and not be spread at school but that didn't allow for the extraordinary mobility of uk student's ;)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 08:00

Ive posted this on the Worry AIBU thread

"I've got a suggestion @ofwarren et al. I can feel my heart rate quicken every time I see the #Breaking. It feels as though an instant emergency has occurred that we need to know right now. But at the same time, people are finding it useful to see numbers and spread.

Why don't we have a separate update thread with case numbers as they come in?

My thoughts are;

This was a thread started about worry and rapidly evolved into a general discussion with people finding it a source a mostly reasonable discussion of risk.

The prep thread is where people need to be really calm and rational and discuss what people can do to get ready.

A separate cases thread would be an ideal partner to these threads.

A few of us have been asking mn for a separate Covid topic so that people can find what they are looking for easily. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/3813298-Coronavirus-topic but I guess, without that, the natural home for it would be "In The News" with lots of signposting to it?"

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 08:00

With the way I'm collecting these updates, we will probably have an hour or so till the rest of the country knows about the cases via the mass media. That can only be helpful for preppers. Some is coming directly from local media in the countries involved and our media waits AGES before it updates.
We can track the virus movement and when it does come here, we will have a small window of time to come to terms with it before all hell breaks loose and it's on the BBC.
I follow a bot account that does some of the work for me when im busy and just gives me a notification. If I do it manually I can find out probably 10 minutes before the bot so don't worry that I'm just endlessly scrolling 😁

lemonjumper · 26/02/2020 08:05

I agree with @OhYouBadBadKitten about having a 'case numbers' thread, particularly given how fast the prepping and AIBU threads are filling up now. Rather than getting lost in amongst all the other posts, it would be better to have the key case information in one thread.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 08:05

BREAKING: South Korea reports 115 new cases of coronavirus, raising total to 1,261 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 08:06

Need to do a vote on it probably. More people have said keep it here so far I think.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 08:07

I would prefer we avoid a separate topic. Its perfectly suitable for preppers and if we have a Covid topic then people will block it and we don't get the same traffic. The more people who are aware the better for all of us.

GorkyMcPorky · 26/02/2020 08:10

I certainly haven't got time to be checking multiple threads and I doubt @ofwarren does either. I sort of thinking it's panicking you to that extent, avoid threads about COVID-19.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2020 08:10

Fwiw, I like the updates.

GorkyMcPorky · 26/02/2020 08:12

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-51565492

This really concerns me. A&E performance in England is already 1/3 worse than last year with corridor-based treatment on trolleys becoming more acceptable. What happens when if SHTF?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 08:12

ok, I'll have to visit mumsnet much less frequently. Thanks for totally not getting it Gorky. It's not about panic, it's about avoiding those tiny shots of adrenaline repeatedly.

MarmiteRocks · 26/02/2020 08:13

I like the updates too

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 08:15

I'm not saying don't have updates, I'm saying please can we have them in a separate thread. It takes negligible extra time to click 'watching' or 'threads I'm on' and do a quick skim. Especially as if you are just skimming, you probably aren't keeping a fully tally in your head anyway.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 08:16

South Korea says 20,716 people are currently being tested for coronavirus, up from 16,734 this morning. Many of them are being tested as a precaution.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/02/2020 08:17

Actually I'm with you @OhYouBadBadKitten. This was a general thread in the prepping area to discuss prepping. I get that people want the updates but I think the CV thread in the AIBU section is a better place for updates.

Another factor is a lot more people will (and are!) coming to these threads for prepping advice and they will have to read through lots of other stuff, which is already also on the AIBU thread.

I think a lot of people appreciate the updates but they don't need to be duplicated and the other thread is a more appropriate home for them. (I appreciate the work you put into it of course @ofwarren!)
