Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Has anyone heard from veneto lately? Hope they are ok

Tropicalsquirrel · 26/02/2020 04:58

Just on the topic of masks, it’s becoming impossible to get them here in Singapore. I was about to buy Vogmasks but the supplier in the last hour posted that due to new export restrictions on masks from Korea, they will no longer be doing preorders. No shops have them. The only options are eBay -equivalents and paying a very high price. So if you still have the opportunity to buy masks from mainstream retailers, I would really recommend that you do so. And antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizer etc- all impossible to get through usual routes here now.

OfftoPenscome · 26/02/2020 05:14

Oops lost a long message. :(

No idea how it ended up replaced by just “you”!!! Grin

OfftoPenscome · 26/02/2020 05:18

When prepping also think of spices. A good set of spices can change any veg into a good curry.

Am also going to stock up on risotto rice and stock. This can be used to create a good meal with just a bit of veg added. Is really nice with sundried tomatoes which can be kept for months.

Am thinking about meal planning as I don’t want to be stuck at home with teens and having to eat very bland meals!

preponderings · 26/02/2020 05:29

Hmmm, maybe we should get more masks? We've 20 (2boxes). 2adults, 2kids. Cheapest P3 I can find here are £66 for a pack of 10. We don't have a lot of spare cash so I'm dithering.

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 05:38

@Dennisreynoldsduster We haven't heard from Veneto Sad

I'm hoping she's just a little taken up with caring duties or is perhaps just feeling under the weather but that neither is serious.

I've realised a fair amount of my prepping involves alcohol, chocolate digestives, pancake mix and Nutella so I will be happy but may need to be craned out of my house at the end of any isolation Grin

School closures imminent for us here in Japan. Looks like two weeks initially and then it is spring break anyway for another week. Sigh.

LeGrandBleu · 26/02/2020 05:52

@preponderings if you don’t have of spare cash don’t waste it on disposable masks.
FFP3 offer a 99% protection but the very economical FFP1 offers an 80% protection and they are extremely cheap.

The safety of masks will vary based on how tight you apply it to your face, how you remove and dispose of it. Medical staff are trained for these things. As a member of public, go for the FFP1 if cash is limited

TipseyTorvey · 26/02/2020 06:19

This could be very bad for Americans. Just reading that the CDC are saying every one needs to prep and Trump is quoted as saying 'it's fine, it's all going to go away'. As though he can bully a virus into submission. Although saying that, Boris isn't saying a single word is he so maybe we're just as bad.

@ofwarren

I really appreciate you posting as you were

I like the UPDATE/BREAKING NEWS etc as they’re easier to see.

I’m sorry someone is stressed by it, but, like you, many of us want to know the latest news and you’re doing a Stirling job of keeping us updated.

There are other threads in this topic and there’s nothing stopping anyone starting another one based on whatever specific discussion they want to have.

Personally CV threads in AIBU put my blood pressure up to an insane level. I don’t know how you’re coping - unless you’re just posting not reading!

Please carry on as you were previously!

I’m getting worried about @veneto I hope she posts soon.

OfftoPenscome · 26/02/2020 06:44

Wheresmymojo - “craned out of my house” made me laugh.

bellinisurge · 26/02/2020 06:50

I'm not particularly fit but can I suggest people seek out something like a 7 minute fitness app. Even if, like me, you would do it pulling a comedy face or being half arsed about it. At least to start. Something for kids to burn up energy if stuck at home. And for you to do.
Star jumps etc.

Funkycats · 26/02/2020 07:01

Good idea about fitness app. We have plenty of books, including puzzle and mind games ones. Also a bit of craft stuff, and things planned for garden (no kids here)

bellinisurge · 26/02/2020 07:02

Also, and this is more a note to self, make sure you keep as up to speed as you can with laundry of bedding towels and underwear. Hard to dry stuff at this time of year. Not everyone has a dryer and, even then, it's a ball ache to have bulk loads around. Particularly if you feel shit.

Plantherd · 26/02/2020 07:12

Quick question.. Why does the UK wait until 2pm to update figures but the rest of the world update when confirmed figures come in? Not sure if that's the case but it seems like it to me!?

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/02/2020 07:14

Well I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who was contributed to (or started!) these threads.

My own internal dial has been edging towards the red Panic Mode Enabled end of the scale over the last few days. I am also really poorly (respiratory which isn't helping panic mode!) and the forecast here is for snow. Having my cupboards and freezer stocked (as much as I can due to budgets) has really helped me. I may have even taken a picture of them on my phone to look at when I'm feeling worried Blush

I have always prepped on a low key scale anyway due to unexpected hospital stays and it has been useful (and I remember being one of the posters begging MNHQ to have the board set up!) but the specific recent threads have helped me so much and given me ideas that I didn't have.

It's also heartening to see how many people on the main boards are recommending these threads, and how many RL people are becoming prepared and can hopefully also feel more secure and reassured. Under the circumstances it would be extremely bad taste to feel "smug" for want of a better word but being completely honest (I know I am a bad person) it's really hard not to feel a bit self satisfied Blush when DH says what a good idea it was to be so organised. Please don't flame me, I'm only trying to be honest about how much it has helped me but probably haven't worded it very well!

I can't take the credit though anyway as I wouldn't have been so organised without everyone here taking the time to post and give support and ideas. So thank you to everyone and welcome to any new people or lurkers, please do post and join in if you're lurking! But don't say it's just flu or we will lock you in a bunker Wink

Funkycats · 26/02/2020 07:24

I know it's a bit ishtf, but we bought a wind up radio with torch and phone charger from amazon.

AvocadoOwl · 26/02/2020 07:29

@Plantherd I think the 2pm thing is independent of announcements about individual cases- sort of a daily round up that seems to be used to reassure people that we are testing a tonne of people.
