Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Despite all the ramping up of everything, I must say I found David Abel’s most recent YouTube vlog reassuring.

wheresmymojo · 25/02/2020 23:08

I'm pleased the Abels are getting better but I have to say David Abel and his son irritate the hell out of me.

I can't watch one of their updates all the way through because I start getting so annoyed...

Thanks for that post @OhYouBadBadKitten Flowers you’re absolutely right that mental health is just as important here. I’m feeling terrible and am not sleeping, there is a real sense of isolation in my life as no one shares my concerns except my son and I don’t want to talk to him about how I’m feeling as it’ll just worry him.

Apart from him there is no one, not a single person can see my point of view and they think it’s just my usual anxiety going haywire. No one is bothering with handgel, stocking up, avoiding crowds, even reading up on the virus at all. It’s like its completely invisible to them. I’m getting increasingly stressed and my health is suffering a lot, having intrusive thoughts too.

allthesharks · 25/02/2020 23:12

A local secondary school near me recently had a skiing trip in Northern Italy. An "unspecified" number of the staff and students who have returned have reported feeling unwell, as a precaution they are being isolated at home.

According to some of the comments on the news article (local newspaper) the school sent home all staff and students who attended the trip, but those who are feeling well are free to return tomorrow. (Surely this goes against the official advice?)

Another comment says that those who are unwell have been tested and are being isolated but their siblings and other household members were told they should go about their lives as normal.

If any of these suspected cases turn out the be confirmed cases, they could have already passed the virus on to their siblings who are going to school as normal, at the same school or others, and this could very easily be spread amongst schools in the area.

My DDs attend a primary school in the area. DD1 has a lung condition and this does make my worry. Schools care so much about their attendance ratings that I don't feel they're taking their health risks seriously enough.

pemberlyshades · 25/02/2020 23:13

Two cases in Africa- surely that's Pandemic Bingo now?!?!

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 23:17

BREAKING: #KUWAIT- 2 confirmed cases coming from #Iran were confirmed as #Coronavirus, bringing the number of cases in Kuwait to 11

Tinnednut · 25/02/2020 23:19

@zen1 me too. I feel if a man of his age and health can cope in a foreign country then I might too.

We used to be well prepped preppers however an international move a few years ago meant we have away our supplies and were reluctant to rebuild it.
But as soon as we heard about the virus we mobilised into action.

Is anyone else making a timetable / plan on how they will spend their days at home? I did months and months on bed rest many years ago it's so important to keep the mind occupied.

I'm considering asking my elderly neighbour (no obvious family and the few visitors she has are elderly too) if she would like to eat dinner with us each night so she isn't isolated. But don't want to come across as a pushy weirdo...

Possible first case in South America. I will keep an eye on this one.

Snowdropdelight · 25/02/2020 23:32

Of Warren how do you get these twitter posts. I'm on twitter but don't know how to fond this stuff

snowqu33n · 25/02/2020 23:33

Japanese usually prep enough for at least a few days anyway due to earthquake and typhoon prep. People are fairly calm on the whole but going out less and wearing masks. Face masks and virus-cleaning sprays, gels etc. seem to be mostly sold out.
My main prep is to get some more supplies in, local essential travel only, and to clean and tidy up the house more.
I am also buying gin that is over 40% so doubles as disinfectant Wink

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 23:34

I follow a few "breaking news" accounts but mainly I find them manually by searching for #coronavirus and manually going through all the posts

GingerBeverage · 25/02/2020 23:36

checking in

zen1 · 25/02/2020 23:36

I'm pleased the Abels are getting better but I have to say David Abel and his son irritate the hell out of me.

Me too! I’ve never watched a full video and only looked at the recent one because it came up on a news feed Grin

snowqu33n · 25/02/2020 23:39

My guess is that for younger (under 60) people and mild cases it is the viral load that tips them into critical, so for medical staff, and people cooped up with lots of iller people, they get exposed to more and more of the virus and it overwhelms their immune response. So, air circulation is important and hospital for critically ill only.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 23:40

The Brazil case is true

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 23:40

URGENTE: Primeiro caso de Coronavírus no Brasil envolve brasileiro que veio da Itália. O primeiro teste deu positivo, falta o segundo para confirmar.

From Italy again!

AmelieTaylor · 25/02/2020 23:46

@allthesharks - it’s all too easy to see how it spreads so easily isn’t it!

It’s worrying

@Tinnednut

why not just ask her the once & see how it goes. I wouldn’t plan for every night from the off - plus you might want to consider if your family could be a risk to her health - you have kids m, they might have it without symptoms (any of us might). I think there’s a fine line between caring for/about the elderly/lonely & risking making them ill. I’ll trying to find a happy balance with older relatives

Another thing I’m finding hard to balance is seeing friends. Especially the ones who can’t see the point in hand washing, let alone anything else.

I must buy some (wall paint) because if I end up on lock down but feel well I’m going to be very kisses iff with myself if I can’t get on with the renovations 🤬

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 00:00

Of Warren thank you.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 00:02

Would people prefer me to keep the update on cases to the AIBU thread rather than here? I'm happy to post in both places or I can stop on this one and let everyone discuss their preps.
I see knowing about the cases as a form of prep, but I don't want to piss people off.
The AIBU posters are happy with updates on their post.

Quick prepping for parents question. I've just done my first ever online grocery order to be delivered to my parents. (I like to go and browse / choose myself so don't online shop although I might start for the boring stuff).

It's with Asda and there was a message during checkout about not giving bags and people needed to be ready with their bags or boxes. So what do they do? Stand at the front door while you take everything out of the crates they bring it to the door in?

My parents live in sheltered care housing so it's sort of like delivering to a hotel room. They will bring it to the flat door won't they?

I ordered it to be delivered in the morning before my mum who has dementia gets up so my dad will be taking the delivery. My dad does everything at a slooow pace so will the poor delivery driver have to wait for my dad to pack £100 worth of Asda shopping - 83 items??? Do they help?

Destinysdaughter · 26/02/2020 00:11

I get a Tescos delivery and usually they bring it in crates into your kitchen, take everything out and leave it on the kitchen surfaces. Then leave you to.put the stuff awsy. They tend to be pretty quick about it.

pemberlyshades · 26/02/2020 00:13

I haven't been following any other threads for aaaagggges with all this going on- so I'm happy for you to keep doing your public service announcements @ofwarren Grin
