Prepping for a pandemic...6

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

When it does start spreading in the UK I think there will be more deaths not just down to the virus but if there are lockdowns who will care for the elderly in their homes doing visits etc?
Both in Italy and China its rare for people to go in nursing homes or have carers as family does it and family quite often live with elderly relatives.
Completely different over here, how many elderly rely on carers visiting 3/4 times a day. If this doesn't happen how many will due as a knock on effect of not having Carers able to come

Gammeldragz · 25/02/2020 21:53

My teen and younger DCs would love it if I said they had to stay home for 2 weeks, unless we lose WiFi of course! They would happily rot in their pyjamas in front of screens for a month...

May grab a few more jigsaws from the charity shop later in the week, it was a surprisingly popular activity during the power cut a few weeks ago.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/02/2020 21:55

Just a threadly reminder to make sure people are looking after their mental health.

For me that means getting out in the fresh air and getting some exercise, yoga (I know.... but it makes me feel good), making sure that I have a good hour before bedtime without my phone, doing some craft stuff, not listening to the radio news as my morning alarm.

If we are getting anxious about this to the point of affecting our sleep it will knock our immune systems. Prepping is a mental thing as well as a doing thing. Invest some time in doing the little things that feel good.

sideorderofchips · 25/02/2020 21:57

Chipstheeldest who is 13 was starting to get a bit anxious over it all

So we sat and went through the stash together. Showed her I had ordered hand gel and we talked about it and she feels alot happier that if it did hit the island that we were prepared.

Mum2jenny · 25/02/2020 21:58

I’m worried as I’m meant to be having a meeting at work with someone who has been skiing in northern Italy last week.

How can I refuse to go? I’m thinking he should be self isolating but I bet he isn’t!

wheresmymojo · 25/02/2020 22:04

@CrapTVAddict

It's one of the reasons I went ahead and purchased latex gloves and a proper full on respirator mask.

I'm sort of thinking some people in the community might need to muck in and help with elderly care so if things like that need to be done I'm going to get stuck in.

BREAKING: #Romania reports 1st case of #coronavirus. The infected came back from Italy 3 weeks ago, before the outbreak Even started in Italy.

BREAKING: 1 case of #Coronavirus in #Madrid, #Spain

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/02/2020 22:09

I’m thinking he should be self isolating but I bet he isn’t!
@Mum2Jenny the current advice is only to self quarantine if you have been to certain named places in Italy. If he has been elsewhere in Northern Italy them he shouldnt self isolate unless he has symptoms.

Batgirl1960 · 25/02/2020 22:10

Thanks all for this really informative thread. One thing i thought about adding to prep list is some ziploc/food bags. Ive purchased some large bags of pasta, powder milk etc and once ive opened them will need something to store them in.

Ikea do a good range of food bags, im also saving empty glass containers e.g Jam, mayo etc. Wash them in the dishwasher then when im ready to use them will sterilize with Miltons.

Snowdropdelight · 25/02/2020 22:10

Wow I've just read the entire thread and watched the ozzy documentary.

Do we know what happened to that poor man in the end? Trapped with ill people all around him, poor bloke!

I've done a rough tally of loo rolls and considering I'm not a prepper per se I'm proud I have at least 117 Grincompared with figs mentioned at around 70

My dd has been hospitalised with wheezing but isn't diagnosed with asthma.
Twice in years past I've had her rushed through packed a and e so it does concern me greatly. We don't have brown inhalers but a good stock of blue ones and her infant volumiser. She's definitely my main worry at 8.

Schools as we know are simply super spreading environments.
My dd school does nothing at all to help dp stop nits. Ie just, please check hair.

We have endless rounds.

Effieray · 25/02/2020 22:14

Ziplock bags is great idea... as is bin bags (including strong black ones.)

If you are finding it hard to store toilet paper, cut the cardboard tube in the middle and remove.

Snowdropdelight · 25/02/2020 22:15

Sorry if it's already been mentioned but the taking meat out of plastic reminded me when I batch cook I freeze it in small enamel dishes, either one or two portion size. I then tip it out frozen and stack them in zip locks. Apologies if everyone already does this but it makes spag bol, soups etc much easier and more efficient to store.

Our freezer is bloody tiny. I've often lamented not having a chest freezer. It's also needs defrosting.

TreesSandSea · 25/02/2020 22:16

Good to see some others starting to cop on to preparing a bit on other threads - and to new lurkers - welcome Smile

Tinnednut · 25/02/2020 22:17

I've been keeping old jars too it's useful for saving left over from tins, like peas and sweatcorn when we wouldn't use the full tin.

MaisieMolly · 25/02/2020 22:18

Hi preppers, I’ve been reading your threads with interest. I’m pregnant so especially worried about how this could impact me. Do you think there’s anything specific I should/could add to my prepping stash?

sideorderofchips · 25/02/2020 22:19

Feck I had forgotten toilet rolls

Just ordered 60

Plus 30l of cat litter

And 84 pouches of cat food

Effieray · 25/02/2020 22:21

Also come across this which is a way to explain about Covid-19 through comic book form... thought mums with young kids may find it useful to prepare - but not panic - them:
www.kingcounty.gov/depts/health/emergency-preparedness/preparing-yourself/pandemic-flu/comic.aspx

Gammeldragz · 25/02/2020 22:28

MaisieMolly when are you due? I wouldn't fancy a hospital delivery in the midst of peak pandemic. Even routine check ups would be impacted, if by nothing more than access being difficult because hospitals would be rammed. Plus the exposure to all those possible carriers.
But that sounds horrifyingly scaremongerish, doesn't it?
Hopefully the situation will be well contained here and it won't come to that.
I'd prep food etc as normal and maybe get a BP monitor so you can keep an eye on that in case your check ups are interrupted.

Effieray · 25/02/2020 22:31

@MaisieMolly

Welcome to thread. How far along are you?

Some ideas:

  • Extra Prenatal vitamins. Repackage them in a zip lock bag.
  • Hydration. Oral rehydration powder (especially if nauseated.)
  • Spotting. Maxi pads for spotting or when your water breaks.
Food wise; extras of things you currently eat and any cravings. Canned salmon, dried beans, peas and also almonds, flax-seeds or powder, peanuts, sunflower seeds. Larger size clothes. Shoes in next size up in case of swollen feet? Anti-nausea tablets or chewing gum. First aid kit and book.

I’m sure others will have more ideas.

MaisieMolly · 25/02/2020 22:38

Thanks for the ideas so far. I’m 4 months, first pregnancy!

Batgirl1960 · 25/02/2020 22:39

I also stocked up on paper plates, disposable cups and cutlery. if i become ill I have visions of a relapse when i see the state of the kitchen..... i have teenagesSmile. So, hopefully if paper plates are used they will find there way into the dustbin. Plus having just read that pandemic prep doc they will come in handy if there are issues with the water (that wont really happen will it?)

Sterristripoff · 25/02/2020 22:41

I am getting increasingly anxious. I’m based in Cardiff. 3 weeks ago there was a big rugby match between Wales vs Italy in the city. My DH went to that match. I’m getting concerned that if there is an outbreak in the UK it may well start here because of that match.

Still if it does come at least I’ve got bucket loads of hand sanitizer and lots of porridge oats!

Effieray · 25/02/2020 22:48

The Pandemic prepper doc goes beyond what most people are generally prepping for on here... a 2 week lockdown in our own homes. Having said that, I have been a prepper for years and always have bottled water in the house (and a waterBOB, lifestraw water filters, water purification tablets & water carrier!)
I am sure the water will not be affected but if it is, I am prepared (I tend to prep for ITSHTF rather than just prepping for this current scenario.)
