Prepping for a pandemic...6

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Whatever the WHO want to call it or not - it's a pandemic now.

Tinnednut · 25/02/2020 20:28

@fourtreefallout I had this problem today too around 10am and then 12pm but it finally worked and my shop went through just waiting on it right now.
I suspect it might be a technical error, the site was very slow yesterday due to some site changes like how the deals are displayed.

FuckThisWind · 25/02/2020 20:29

National news was actually behind my local news re school closures (NE England, here)

wheresmymojo · 25/02/2020 20:31

@ShanghaiDiva

I can’t see anywhere getting to the Hubei mortality rates. Even in China, the province with the highest number of cases after Hubei is Guangdong with just over 1300 compared to 64000 in Hubei and I imagine health services in China are currently far more stretched than the NHS.

Yes, but you guys (China) locked down.

I really don't see that happening here, in which case we will have exponential growth.

Listening to the WHO conference the approach taken behind the scenes in China to stop the spread of cases was insanely good, the whole way the country mobilised behind stopping the spread.

I just don't see that occurring in the UK at all. They've already said that when the count reaches 100 they'll stop contact tracing and quarantines so it will run rampant...

Hi all

I've been lurking on these threads as a bit of a closet prepper

In light of facemasks I was sure a few years ago i had bought some cheap and went lookibg

Sure enough I had bought a pack of 50. Checked through my amazon history. It cost me £2.86

Never more as now me been glad of past me being a tad paranoid as at least I have some if need be

Motorina · 25/02/2020 20:35

A few pages back a live WHO briefing was mentioned. Does anyone know if that's available anywhere or have a link? Thank you!

Sixp · 25/02/2020 20:37

It’s available on the WHO site.

Motorina · 25/02/2020 20:43

Thank you Sixp

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 20:43

bobbbbby · 25/02/2020 20:45

Legislation has been written up it seems. Gives a good idea of direction re isolation etc. www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/129/contents/made

Came across this free guide to prepping for Pandemic...

sideorderofchips · 25/02/2020 20:58

Thanks effieray that's really handy!

wheresmymojo · 25/02/2020 21:06

Well...holy shit the WHO report was eye opening.

China have done an amazing job, I had no idea about all the amazing things they've done behind the scenes.

It has scared me though too. I just honestly can't see us doing half as good a job here.

So final prepping here. Spoke to my DM tonight and got her to ramp up her preps.

Speaking to PILs tomorrow to do the same.

Bought the last FFP3 mask in the local Wickes which I pick up tomorrow with a pack of replacement filters.

Going to go back over some of the old threads to see if I've missed anything...

Thinking of posting this on my FB book for friends. Not sure if still too soon?
Ok. I'm putting this out there. I'm not scare mongering, I have wanted to post this for about 2 weeks, but have held off. Some of you might think I'm bonkers, however, I was involved in pandemic planning for this very thing a few years ago for my employer. I have already done all of these things. I started 2 weeks ago. I think it's especially important if you have little ones. Now is the time to prepare, and stock up on essentials, especially if you or a loved one depends on regular medication. Get repeat descriptions ordered. Stock up on food essentials. Fill your freezer. Fill up your petrol tank. Buy 70% alcohol hand gel (if you can get any). Get your pet food. Be prepared to stay at home for a couple of weeks if you have to. As we are beginning to see, lock downs can happen in an instant. Don't panic, but do be prepared. I am sharing this information as i don't want any of my friends caught out when things step up a gear here in the UK

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 21:09

It's not too soon Bob as we seem with Italy. Just be aware that most people will totally ignore it.

sideorderofchips · 25/02/2020 21:10

If it helps Lloyd's pharmacy still has alcohol gel in stock for delivery and collect in store

jimmychooing · 25/02/2020 21:16

Is it 60% or 70% gel? I keep reading different things

Givemeabreakpls · 25/02/2020 21:16

I do wonder what people who use food banks/rely on school meals etc will do if/when this hits. I’m struggling to afford to prep more than the basics at the moment; I’m worried for those who can’t manage.

sideorderofchips · 25/02/2020 21:17

I think it's 60% 8 know carex is 70% as my collegue is a microbiologist abd she uses it/recommends it

But I bought some from Lloyd's and some from superdrug

sideorderofchips · 25/02/2020 21:18

I've made a list and I'm slowly working on it.

I'm in the channel islands which is insanely expensive so I'm getting what I can off my list when I can incase it hits here

Effieray · 25/02/2020 21:24

Just a gentle reminder to check/ purchase First Aid Kit. If the hospitals get busy, we need to sort out minor ailments at home. I also bought this book:
The Complete First Aid Pocket Guide: Step-By-Step Treatment for All of Your Medical Emergencies Including - Heart Attack - Stroke - Food Poisoning - ... - Shock - Anaphylaxis - Minor Wounds - Burns
Author is John Furst. £12.21 on Amazon. Really small book but detailed.

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 25/02/2020 21:33

@fuckthiswind. Im NE too, perfect username, the wind kept me up all fucking night. I first read about the school in Middlesbrough on Facebook and wasn't massively concerned because local pages I follow tend to over exaggerate.

There was a road reported as being "flooded" and we were actually travelling at that exact point and it wasn't flooded at all, there was a large puddle. Reading the comments in the local paper report some of the parents attitudes show that a lot of people are not taking things seriously.

One Dad said the school have closed for nothing and that none of the children have the virus because his son has been on the same trip but attends a different local school and theirs is open as normal and pupils don't need to even self isolate until symptoms start so he's decided this is evidence that the teachers just want some time off.

Makes me wonder how many won't take the self isolation seriously and their kids will be in Starbucks or wherever because they've only got mild symptoms.

AlohaMolly · 25/02/2020 21:34

My local rowlands pharmacy had small bottles of Milton hand gel still, for £2.29.

justchecking1 · 25/02/2020 21:40

This is my worry about schools closing. Can you imagine confining teenagers to the house for 2 weeks?! It won't happen. Might slow down any spread I guess, but won't really be self-isolation I doubt
