Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Lord....the numbers just keep racking up today Shock

I'm going to have to do a proper catch up in an hour or so but I have twitter notifications about new cases popping up all day today...

I actually thought it might go a bit quiet again for a few days but I guess not Confused

ITALY— #CORONAVIRUS:

• 21 Feb: 20 cases

• 25 Feb: 322 cases

That’s 1610% Increase in cases in 4 days. You read that right, not 161%, 1610%.

Scary

wheresmymojo · 25/02/2020 18:21

Yikes.

Your posts on the conference just caught my eye Avocado

I think everyone was holding out hope that there were lots of undetected cases that would make the mortality drop.

Doesn't seem so.

Which is actually very concerning because China have done amazing things but will Western Govts do the same?

And if not, how much closer to Wuhan's mortality rate will we get with overwhelmed health services...

I think this will be a massive OH SHIT moment for Governments across the world.

I'm having an oh shit moment about it now TBH.

Possibly even an Oh Fuck moment.

I mean, of course we can do the things China have done.

The question is, will we?

I shall definitely be watching the conference.

Going to get an alcoholic drink 🍷

Highly recommend watching the conference if you can spare the time @wheresmymojo. Extremely informative on lots of different levels.

SleepWarrior · 25/02/2020 18:28

I've just watched the Australian Four Corners documentary and it's left me wondering about the people who were possibly welded into their apartments - if they became ill locked into their homes then surely some of them would die without being ever found or counted in death toll figures. It doesn't quite fit with the picture of knocking on doors to take temperatures and then dragging people from their homes for having a fever. Maybe the welding wasn't actually sealing people inside and was closing off empty buildings?

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:31

UPDATE: The 2 infected in Austria are Italians. The hotel is completely isolated. #COVID19 #Österreich #austria

How long has Italy been harbouring this virus??

zen1 · 25/02/2020 18:32

For anyone interested, Dettol All in One disinfectant spray is on offer in Robert Dias at the moment. You can spray it on door handles and upholstery amongst other things.

AvocadoOwl · 25/02/2020 18:36

I wonder if you might be right @SleepWarrior. Apparently a big part of the Chinese approach has been stopping within-family transmissions by door to door temp checks and compulsory hospital admissions, because in a city locked down most people are infected by other family members bringing it into the home.

Makes sense, although I can't imagine the pain and desperation of being forcibly removed from my family (or having a family member removed). The stuff of true nightmares.

Delatron · 25/02/2020 18:42

The speed at which the Italy cases are rising (and the death toll unfortunately) means it must have been spreading, unchecked for quite a while. So the Austrian cases are Italians and the Tenerife case. A

We’ve just had an email from school, as a group we’re in Italy over half term, although Southern Italy- Rome and Naples area.

At the moment they are advising to be vigilant and talk to students about good hygiene and they have linked to the Gov.UK site.

Whilst they may not have been in the infected area, I can’t but help think about the airport, the plane and the mix of people in the places they visited on the tourist trail.

It seems a bit closer to home and I’m still worrying about going to London on Saturday!

Snowdropdelight · 25/02/2020 18:44

I don't understand how self isolation works?

Let's say I catch it from colleagues, who travel all over. I only know when I have symptoms. I call 111 and stay at home.

What then? What are the logistics? I have two small dc... One bathroom 🚽.

What do we do??

Eg dh brings meals and leaves them outside door? How would he collect them?

Maybe puts them in disposable foil like take away, I put them in plastic bag but how and where does dh dispose of them?

I go to the loo when family out and go to bathroom... Do I spray dettol on everything I touch on the way out? What about germs I can't get and all the while I'm shedding the virus.

Even if we had upstairs and down stairs loos we could just about spilt living and have dh and dc all downstairs... But it's the shared bathroom?

I can't see how self isolating works.

RaddishKimchi · 25/02/2020 18:44

Maybe the welding wasn't actually sealing people inside and was closing off empty buildings?
Some of the videos of welding were from people inside their apartments as they got welded in, so definitely not empty.

Snowdropdelight · 25/02/2020 18:46

Calmon, I'm staying away from London at the moment. I appreciate people have to live there and get the tube etc, but it's such high density living.

GorkyMcPorky · 25/02/2020 18:46

@Snowdropdelight, tbh if it gets to the stage that one of us has it, I'll assume we'll all get it and won't attempt to isolate a family member. We only have one bathroom (two loos) anyway.

Legoandloldolls · 25/02/2020 18:46

If your a meat eater, then cooking bacon lasts a while in the fridge. Sometimes its rashers and some times it's a massive block of bacon. We chop it up and cook cheesy bacon pasta with it. Sainsburys is £1 a pack. Its vacuum packed. A firm meal favourite here. We also add steamed broccoli and mix it all up.

Olliphant · 25/02/2020 18:50

Just found out that my sons best friend was tested for corona yesterday!!! He had been in Milan early Feb. He is clear apparently...I live in a very small town, it just shows how it can spread.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:52

URGENT: #ITALY— says they receive 300.000 911 calls a day in the #Coronavirus epicentre, #Lombardy (112 in italy)

ShanghaiDiva · 25/02/2020 18:53

Being separated from your family is what I would expect in China and one of the reasons i am not going back at the moment.

echobench · 25/02/2020 18:54

I live in Greater London and we are all on public transport all the time.

I would avoid if I could but I can’t. So I’m not panicking. Not to mention the fact that in Italy it’s emerged in small towns, not large cities, first.
