Prepping for a pandemic...6

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

DH mentioned at the weekend that we should try and get DFIL stocked up with a couple of weeks worth of food for him and the dog, problem is we don't want to worry him!

awesomeaircraft · 25/02/2020 15:41

I am not a medic so one could maybe confirm or infirm this, but all children in the UK (EU/USA?) are vaccinated against multi strands of Pneumonia via the Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV).

Should this not give them all a real good chance against the main complication of this new virus?

CuriousCapricorn · 25/02/2020 15:42

So I’ve just been to pick up dd from school and saw one of ds’s friends who attends the supposed closed school and he said that the teachers and pupils who attended the ski trip to Italy have all been sent home and the school is still open. I’m presuming lots of rumours going around so I feel a bit calmer.

Very late to the prepping party but am going to compile a list for when I get paid on Thursday. I already have tons of food in the cupboards/pantry etc but no room in freezer.
Thinking more non food items are needed here and lots of long life treats.

One of the Chamonix cluster was a child @Twixes @ofwarren but they recovered completely, as did all of that cluster, I think.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 15:49

It's a different type of pneumonia than the one in the vaccine schedule

awesomeaircraft · 25/02/2020 15:52

@ofwarren - Interesting. Thanks, I got hopeful reading this article.

Twixes · 25/02/2020 15:54

Thanks @RedLentilYellowLentil

#Bahrain now reporting 23 cases of #coronavirus -- up from 17 just about an hour ago

tryingtoprep · 25/02/2020 16:06

For those worrying about panicking family members. It's always a good idea to have a few things stocked up. Snow days, power cuts, strikes. Could you persuade them that way?

I'm another one with a tiny freezer. Has anyone considered pickling their veg? The sterilising of jars worries me. I have a feeling I'd mess it up but some people might want to consider it as an option. There's guides on how to do it online.

I know this is viral pneumonia but I thought (hoped!) the jab would offer some protection against developing secondary bacterial pneumonia.

VampiricLady · 25/02/2020 16:06

God things are really gathering pace now, I was a bit calmer this past week but now my anxiety is back with a vengeance!

Gammeldragz · 25/02/2020 16:07

Another big shop done in Lidl. Got into a discussion with a random guy about the virus as he heard me talking to DS about it, while I had to correct him on the death rate vs flu, he did agree that regardless of that our NHS and gov likely won't cope and stocking up for potential lockdown wasn't a bad idea!
Have added 8 boxes of Earl Grey tea (DH's fav), pasta x8, more tins, lots of onions. More flu capsules and loo roll, washing powder, toothbrushes and paste. Loads of spices and sauces. Flour, sugar, coffee... They didn't have tinned potatoes though. Got enough to survive a month if we need to but would be some odd meals. Going to rearrange the pantry (cupboard under the stairs) tomorrow and stock take as I've run out of room to out stuff away!
Freezers are full, one large upright full of reduced bread and the deep freeze full of meat, veg and random stuff. I still feel like I'm missing things though. Cats need more wet food, their one was out of stock but I do have 20kg of dry food and lots of tuna tins.

wheresmymojo · 25/02/2020 16:09

Have been out and about today so not much time to check in - I saw that the UK update was delayed...is it out yet?

Preppers - how worried on a scale of 1-10 should we be? DH & I commute to London of that makes any difference. No immune type illnesses to speak of. Kids- the same - but they go to primary school do lots of opportunity to be infected there!

I've only just got through my no-deal Brexit stash of food. (Managing those use-by dates has been tricky!)

Guess I'd better stock up...?

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 16:20

The department of health report is in
Basically took them 2 hours to add 9 and 4
No change people

lemonjumper · 25/02/2020 16:22

Figures updated:

As of 25 February 2020, a total of 6,795 people have been tested:

6,782 negative.
13 positive.

All future figures will now include the four cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 16:23

Preppers - how worried on a scale of 1-10 should we be?

We don't worry because we prepare. Wink

Difficult to say though. Worried about imminent end of world - 0 Worried about potential disruption to our daily lives and potential shut down of certain areas and services - 6/7 ??

lemonjumper · 25/02/2020 16:24

Since they are now including the cruise passengers in the tally, that must mean they have got the UK test results back? Which presumably means that nobody else in that group tested positive?

Motorina · 25/02/2020 16:26

@MissPoldark, you asked "It baffles me why front line healthcare staff don’t always wear masks as a precaution, especially just at the moment. I’m sure there’s a good reason?"

As someone who wears one reasonably often, there are lots of good reasons.

  1. They're uncomfortable.
  2. They impede communication particularly with individuals with hearing difficulties. I don't just mean people with significant hearing loss - I'm losing some frequencies and can struggle to catch what colleagues wearing masks are saying, although I wouldn't otherwise have any issue.
  3. Empathy and compassion are an important part of healthcare, and covering the face impedes all that really important non-verbal stuff. This is particularly significant when treating kids (for whom a smile really matters), or anyone frightened, distressed or confused.
  4. (This is a personal one) - they make my glasses steam up, and I hate that.

Plus the research is that they don't protect the clinician very well, and only protect the patient if the clinician is at the dripping snot in the wound stage of a cold.

FFP3 masks clearly offer much greater protection, but the tradeoff is a greater impact on both verbal and non-verbal communication.

Clearly there are situations where that tradeoff is unavoidable, but routine clinical practice isn't it.

I'd add that most clinical encounters pose no more risk of transmission than having your hair cut, and your hairdresser doesn't even wear gloves! If aerosol generation or spraying body fluids are anticipated, then masks are more likely to be worn.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/02/2020 16:27

With two healthy adults and two young kids, I think it's reasonable to assume that the worst would be to be stuck in during a quarantine or being told to self isolate if you become a known contact. I'd just make sure you have plenty of food, entertainment and enough money to hand to cover the overheads in the former case and perhaps look for ways to ship the kids out of the home to a relative/ friend if there is an adult isolating in the latter scenario.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/02/2020 16:29

only protect the patient if the clinician is at the dripping snot in the wound stage of a cold. 😱

Zorona · 25/02/2020 16:31

I just went through my stash and I have a lot of pasta based meals. I have a big bag or rice but no idea what to serve with it. Any ideas on tinned based meals with rice?
