Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

No worries Trees yes it all seems a bit more real now.

This thread has been eye opening for me.

Looks like a school here has shut for 2 weeks too due to a recent ski trip to Italy.
An all boys school around 2 miles from the above doctor surgery. I am hoping that is just a coincidence.

Ready roll pastry freezes wonderfully @PurpleCalm. Iceland also sell frozen blocks of puff and shortcrust. We like them with bacon and mozzarella - which also freeze well.

LittleSwede · 25/02/2020 14:42

Fridge items found include feta or halloumi cheese (usually long dates), vacuum packed beetroot, chorizo and other cured meats?

NcFortuna · 25/02/2020 14:45

My huge bag of pancake mix just arrived. Now I’m wondering when I should consider a prepper snack dash to the supermarket for crisps and chocolate. If I go too soon I’ll eat them now, If I leave it too late there will be massive locust like crowds stripping the shelves to contend with. I’m thinking with some schools closing we could be just hours/days away from more confirmed positive cases in the UK?

PurpleCalm · 25/02/2020 14:45

Unfortunately my freezer is jam packed full :( I am buying a new one soon as we're having our utility room redone but not quite ready for it yet. Though we could bring the purchase forward I guess!

Hadn't thought of cured meats, not something we buy often actually!

Bacon is actually a good idea, that usually has a long date.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 14:49

I feel like I just want it to hurry up and come now. We all know it's coming and the wait is dreadful. I know it means I'm going to have to isolate but the quicker it starts, the quicker it's over..(in my head at least)

cheninblanc · 25/02/2020 14:52

I haven't prepped but I now have a feeling I may need too. I don't want to say too much... No one I know has it but has visited Italy on a trip and that's concerning. Thinking big tesco shop tonight. Becomes real when it's almost on your doorstep

limberlost · 25/02/2020 15:02

Thank you to those responding. I have decided not to go today and will review other events this week later in the week.

LittleSwede · 25/02/2020 15:03

I've got my ocado order coming this afternoon, now wish I had added more treats for it! Got a big 'bag in the box' wine arriving (phew!) but no crisps!

Tinnednut · 25/02/2020 15:04

👋 hello
For those looking for long life fridge ideas consider Tofu often has a couple of weeks on it.

Is anyone else struggling with extended family members sticking their head in the sand? I'm really worried about a few of them, they all have the attitude of might as well get it and get it done. They just don't seem to understand how this will effect the supply chain to the supermarket.

dingit · 25/02/2020 15:05

Anyone with a dc at uni? I'm not sure what to say to dd. On one hand I don't want her to panic, but want her to have done some prep. Dh is still at 🙄 stage.

Olliphant · 25/02/2020 15:05

I'm all ready - everything ordered, and have three weeks of food (including breakfast and lunches)....my main problem now is making sure i eat stuff before it goes out of date, and that I remember to replace it. I am a natural prepper but this time I feel I have gone a bit overboard - it's almost like I think I will be sealed in the house! Swine flu never even crossed my mind, I travelled through major airports when it was about; the only difference is I now have kids. Do you think we might prep as a way of knowing we have done our best? So that if the worst does happen we can say at least we tried to be as prepared as we could? I hope it all just fizzles out so that I can have at least on month of tiny food bills!

YoursTunbridgeWells · 25/02/2020 15:08

Long life fridge items - fage yoghurt, cheddar Chorizo

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 15:10

Can someone check whether this is genuine. I'm on the school run

@PurpleCalm

If you have anywhere you could put your freezer in the meantime, I’d do that.
We’re remodelling the kitchen and only currently have an under counter fridge. New kitchen will have a fridge freezer & I’m contemplating ordering one now, but until this kitchen is taken out it’s going to be massively in the way - new kitchen isn’t ordered yet, nor fitter booked and I’m
Not sure now is going to be the ideal time to be trying to order a kitchen and have it fitted (no idea what componentry supply will be affected 😖).

So not sure what we will do. But if you have anywhere you could put another freezer then I’d seriously consider ordering it now.

Sausage rolls freeze well as do mousse type desserts. You can also freeze more cheese, milk, etc

The desserts often have a shockingly long shelf life!

Angel delight?

(Even tinned) Chickpeas you can make hummus if your kids like that, with the packets of little bread sticks.

I’m going to be lost without broccoli & cucumber etc but I’m hoping the carrots & radishes last for a while.

Dried fruit like currants & raisins? (Terrible for sugar & teeth - but if they’re very small, needs must sometimes

Peanut butter on crackers

Frozen peas - one of the small shares them cooked but would eat a whole bag frozen if allowed - someone once said it wasn’t good for you, but despite 4 years of constantly eating them he’s neither gone green or been unwell 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sorry keep deviating from ‘fridge’ stuff!

Pate?

I think just checking dates on anything you regularly eat and keeping the fridge stuff well rotated and regularly topped up is the best we can do really

Tesco do Alternative Double cream in a terra pack - it has lots more ingredients than cream, but it’s really nice.

I have a box of those, coffee & cheese & wine. I’ll be fine 🤣

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 15:25

Yeah twixes I'm hoping there isn't an Ill child ☹️

Twixes · 25/02/2020 15:34

@ofwarren yes me too. I know there have been no deaths reported in children but have there been cases?

I'm at work today and can't concentrate. This whole thing has me so distracted. Just ordered supplies of contact lenses, due to arrive on Thursday.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 15:35

I know there were a few kids in china. I don't think many (if any) died though

Twixes · 25/02/2020 15:35

The guy I share an office with is sneezing and sniffling. He hasn't been anywhere lately but I'm super paranoid at the moment!

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 15:36

It makes you so aware of it doesn't it. Makes me visibly flinch.

ifonly4 · 25/02/2020 15:39

dingit - I spoke to DD about it approximately three weeks ago and at the time she felt it wouldn't affect us. I was in her halls over the weekend and there are notices up telling students to self isolate if they're come back from certain countries and are feeling unwell. After the last 24 hours that list needs an update.

She'll have to visit the doctors surgery every day this week, I dropped a big hint about trying to keep away from other patients, but I think I'm going to have to have a chat about CV again, washing hands etc.
