Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Matt Hancock was on BBC news, said stopping flights does not work so its business as usual hmm funny how other countries can manage it

Didn't work in Italy. But it is more complicated than that. Planes don't go from one country to another and back again, over and over. They tend to travel round the world, picking up and dropping off. That's why flights are cheap. So regardless of where you have been, or are going, the plane itself may well have been to several other destinations already.

I am more worried about the movement across land and sea which is completely unregulated, and as we have seen recently, many, many people have been able to travel across the world, unregulated, and in terrible circumstances. Some are found, many just disappear.

I've been following these threads and can't thank everyone enough for all the info - I've got a go-bag ready, and think I've got most of the prepping things I want: FFP3 masks, gloves, goggles; household items eg loo roll, tissues; meds; toiletries; cleaning supplies; hand sanitisers; pet food/litter; and got a big Sainsbury's delivery of non-perishable foods and wine arriving today. (No idea where I'm going to store it all!)

lemonjumper · 25/02/2020 11:13

Thanks @ofwarren - looks like it's Amazon Now (the 'virtual supermarket' stuff) that is suspended, but general Amazon Prime is still running as normal.

Legoandloldolls · 25/02/2020 11:14

Well if Amazon cant cope we are stuffed. You'd think they would be gleeful for the spike in business. Another reason to have various sources of supplies and infrastructure.

I have hand gel in the car but still stuck my finger in my eye whilst driving today. Impossibly hard not to for me. I might get better protection from.my £1 primark gloves than a mask. With four kids in four schools I wont be able to prevent it. I can only prepair.

On the primark note, they had lots of gel, its 70% and 80p

NebbiaZanzare · 25/02/2020 11:16

It's Amazon Prime Now, which I think is the same day service in a few big cities like Milan, Rome ? Will check. Might just be the food part. And it's just for today.

Normal Amazon Prime doesn't seem to be included in the downtime.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 25/02/2020 11:16

I'm finding the current approach of the UK government baffling.

I agree. Baffling, inadequate, unclear, I could go on all day. Likewise PHE.

My current bugbear is the advice PHE is giving schools. I live on the border of two local authorities and some of my children go to school in one, some in the other. In one, the schools have notified parents if any pupils are self-isolating and authorised absence if they decide to keep their own kids at home. In the other, they haven't told anyone anything and won't be authorising absence. They haven't even told parents that's their policy. They both claim to be following the advice of PHE. Confused

EliK · 25/02/2020 11:17

I don't know where to store everything. How does everyone else do it? I had a small Brexit stash previously but obviously I've upped it a lot recently. My freezer and cupboards are absolutely packed.
Go bags are the next thing I need to organise. I've been in the situation before where DS had to stay in hospital suddenly and we had absolutely nothing with us.

lemonjumper · 25/02/2020 11:17

It's Amazon Prime Now, which I think is the same day service in a few big cities like Milan, Rome ?

Yes, that's it - the same day service has been suspended. I was thinking of Amazon Fresh (the food delivery service), but Prime Now is indeed the same day service.

Either way, regular Prime seems fine at the moment.

Yogurt can be made very easily on a small scale with very simple kitchen equipment. It is important to be very clean though.

You will need:
500 ml of fresh or UHT Milk.
25 g powdered milk (optional)
a saucepan (or a glass jug if using a microwave) .
a thermometer (optional).
2 Tablespoons of plain natural live Yogurt.
a wide necked thermos flask.
a jug and maybe a basin

Method:
If using pasteurised fresh milk , heat it to 85C, stirring occasionally, then leave it to cool to about 46C (this process results in thicker yoghurt, breaks down some proteins, as well as killing some unwanted bacteria)
If using UHT milk, just heat to 46° C.

Whisk in the powdered milk, if using, while heating up the milk.

Blend 2 tablespoons of yogurt with a little of the warm milk; when a smooth mixture is obtained, pour into the rest of the warm milk and stir.

(If using a microwave I just add the yogurt a little at a time into the jug of warm milk)

Pour the milk/yogurt mixture into a pre warmed wide necked thermos flask, seal and leave for 7 hours ( I have left it overnight before now)

Pour the Yogurt into the basin or into smaller containers with lids, cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours to allow the yogurt to thicken further.

Yogurt made this way can be kept in a refrigerator for 4 or 5 days.

If wished add pureed fruit or other flavourings to portions after making.

I pre warm the thermos flask by scalding it out with boiling water.

You can then use some of this home made yogurt as the starter for the next batch

A patient has finally tested positive for the #coronavirus after being previously tested as negative 8 times. The patient is being treated in a hospital in Anyue county, Sichuan province. #COVID19 t.co/GkYzHOGOik

EliK · 25/02/2020 11:19

Thanks for the Primark tip @Legoandloldolls I need more hand gel

Schools & universities in #Kirkuk #Iraq will be closed for 15 days due to #Coronavirius with ban on public gatherings during this period

RedLentilYellowLentil · 25/02/2020 11:32

Guardian newsfeed: "Closing borders, blanket travel bans and more extreme government policies will not stop the spread of coronavirus, according to the head of the World Travel and Tourism Council."

This made me laugh but at the same time it's incredibly irresponsible. Does anyone think maybe the World Travel and Tourism Council - "the body which represents the Travel & Tourism private sector globally" - might have a teeny bit of a vested interest here?

teta · 25/02/2020 11:32

That's so worrying @Ofwarren. So you have individuals that are ill and not testing positive.Yet you also have individuals testing positive that don't appear to be ill. It will be so difficult to track the spread of Covid19. Especially as so many are asymptomatic in the early stages ... and it seems possibly all the way through.
It appears to be acting like the perfect stealth virus.
NB. I do not believe in any wild conspiracy theories but do wonder whether a virus escaped accidentally from the Wuhan lab. Either a worker became accidentally infected or some live animals escaped. There are Bats kept there according to some reports .

Aspergersmum · 25/02/2020 11:35

It just feels so inevitable now. Someone out shopping today hugged their friend then said they'd just come back from Thailand! But that it was fine, they didn't have coronavirus!

We've been to Costco and now have a big box of cleaning wipes and a huge jug of Dettol laundry cleanser which I see has been updated to say that it kills coronavirus!

YoursTunbridgeWells · 25/02/2020 11:36

I feel bad. I called school as they send out a coronavirus email which missed out this piece of info.
They claim they copied and pasted from the site and said that it does not advise that you need to self isolate if you have been to an affected region of Italy. I read the below and beg to differ. I expect they must have taken the info before the site was updated this morning???

*If you have returned from these specific areas since February 19, you should call NHS111 and stay indoors and avoid contact with other people even if you do not have symptoms:

Iran
Specific lockdown areas in Northern Italy as designated by the Government of Italy
Special care zones in South Korea as designated by the Government of the Republic of South Korea
Hubei province (returned in the past 14 days)*

NebbiaZanzare · 25/02/2020 11:39

Yes, that's it - the same day service has been suspended. I was thinking of Amazon Fresh (the food delivery service), but Prime Now is indeed the same day service.

Actually, looks like the delivery within 1/2 hours service just for food. So possibly same day is still OK. I don't doubt people are taking one look at the photos of supermarkets and thinking fuck it, I'm going to do it online for the first time ever. So probably a huge uptick in use in far too short a timeframe for such a time sensitive service.

Some joker has sent out fake news that schools are closed til May. There was HUGE REJOICING on my son's sport teams Whatsapp groups. And equally HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT when they found out it wasn't true.

We might be being softened up for a two extension of special measures at the the end of this week. They started with "school trips are cancelled" before closing schools entirely. Just seen on La Repubblica that school trips are suspended until 15th March. Have to wait and see if that starts to evolve into "..and so is everything else".

Probably best to drip feed it rather than going for an "all in one go" announcement if we're potentially looking at three weeks of not normal minimum.

pemberlyshades · 25/02/2020 11:43

Isn't there quite a clear sex based divide in mortality? Like 60% are men or something? Why is that? Any ideas?

Storage:
People use:
On top of kitchen cabinets, behind kickboard.
Understairs
Top of cupboards/wardrobes
Bottom of wardrobes
Under beds
Behind books on bookshelf
Under/behind sofa
Under various pieces of furniture
I have some between furniture and internal wall.
Blanket box
Under dining table/ desks.
Behind bath panel.
Some things can be kept in garage. ( Antibac, other cleaning spares) onions hanging in net bag.

You can get a lot under a bed.

Under kick boards, stick in a carrier bag then you can fish the whole bag out with the loft hatch hook.

BREAKING: Croatia confirms it's first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

AspergersMum · 25/02/2020 11:48

@MyPartInHistory I'm lazy so we have the Easiyo yogurt maker and buy the sachets from Lakeland when they are on sale. Then I only need to boil the kettle and mix the powder with fresh water and wait 8 hours, overnight to get a kilo of fresh yogurt.

BREAKING: 2 people in #Austria suspected of having #coronavirus

teta · 25/02/2020 11:49

Hk schools are closed until the 19th of April. Sympathies to all the parents.
If school closures happen here I will need vast amounts of wine to cope with 4 kids - 3 teenagers, 2 with Gcse's this year.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 11:51

URGENT: now confirmed- #Austria announces 2 cases of #Coronavirus
