Prepping for a pandemic...6

wheresmymojo · 24/02/2020 16:00

6th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

BREAKING: Over 260 cases of #coronavirus confirmed in Italy. #COVID19italia

1000 people now on lock down in a hotel in tenerife due to one positive case. I would not be happy given what happened on the Diamond Princess.

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 09:39

@ofwarren is that over 260 new cases?

Legoandloldolls · 25/02/2020 09:41

Re masks. I bought 4 disposable fpp2 and 4 fpp3 yesterday in B&Q. I have one Fpp3 reusable. I'm only going to use them if its inforced. If its aerosol transmission then it could go in via any mucus membrane I guess but I havent researched that. There are 6 people in my family.

I was wondering if freezing the the reusable ones would work? No idea on the upper and lower limits for viruses. I might have a nosey today and see if my brain is still up to biology grad level. I was more of a bacteria enthusiast but I did work on CJD and anthrax ( went for a jobs at few extremely scary major UK laboratories but chickened out and went into medical research)

I'm supposed to be going to Italy in June. To an area that isn't affected yet but unsure whether to pay off the balance on it or not... I've got until April so I'll just need to wait and see.
OH works with someone who is going to Venice at the weekend... that makes me slightly nervous.

Oh god. I really hope it doesn't become another DP situation.

Re: Masks - just noting that everyone on the Cruise ship had paper masks. Unless medical grade, tight fitting, with goggles, there really is no point.

ifonly4 · 25/02/2020 09:48

I've just bought some sun dried tomatoes in a jar, might be tasty in something. Thinking about a couple of pots of long life hard cheese off the shelf, rather than the fridge -handy for adding extra flavour and protein
to pasta meals

This is not true and I wish people would stop spreading it. That will make things worse if we do have an outbreak.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 09:53

Im not sure Hasa. I need to search rather than relying on that news source

BREAKING: Iran confirms 34 new cases of coronavirus, total of 95 cases and 15 deaths t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Baaaahhhhh · 25/02/2020 09:56

Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

BREAKING: Iran confirms 34 new cases of coronavirus, total of 95 cases and 15 deaths

And yet, 0 serious or critical cases, how convenient.

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 25/02/2020 10:03

Really grateful for all the advice on these threads, but unless I have missed it I havent seen any discussion of the safety of precooked food.

I can’t help but wonder if transmission on the cruise ship and some of the other areas has been through food.

I then started to look at my shopping habits. Bagged salads, quiches, sandwiches, bread, cake, biscuits etc. I have no idea who is handling that food, how safe it is, or will be, in an outbreak scenario.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Obviously I can avoid all, but am I just totally overeacting..

teta · 25/02/2020 10:08

I think @Baaaahhhhh is right. It's one reason why I've not bought any. It's so infectious it's pretty pointless wearing one, unless you are in a clinical setting.

BREAKING: A school in Cheshire has shut for the week amid fears staff and students returning from a half term trip to Italy could have contracted coronavirus t.co/KgcnQjuLON

MyPartInHistory · 25/02/2020 10:13

I have been lurking on this board for a while. Whilst I would not describe myself as an anxious person, and am not particularly anxious now (or should I say yet?), I do think we shall have COVID-19 here in the UK at some stage. In fact, I believe it is already here, but not yet making itself known.

I've been keeping on top of the available information since this all started, but have kept it largely to myself as everyone I have spoken to about it (including DH) has been in the "it's all being blown out of proportion" camp. However, there has been a change in the last few days. DH is now being supportive of my stash of goodies, and others appear to be thinking of prepping for having to stay at home.

I have masks and safety goggles. I travel up to London for work and am not thinking of using them at this stage, but they may come in useful if there is a lockdown and someone has to go out for provisions.

In relation to food etc, I'm not prepping for Armageddon, but I am prepping for up to 4 weeks of lockdown at home. We are a family of 5 adults and late teens. Whilst it would do me a great deal of good to be forced to consume the slimfast and out of date slimming meal sachets lurking at the back of my cupboards, the other 4 are tall and slim and eat like horses. I need to stash a fair bit!

Does anyone here make their own yogurt? If so, can you recommend any equipment and can you make it with UHT milk? I think DH can cope with most things, but going without yogurt for breakfast might tip him over the edge!!

FourTeaFallOut · 25/02/2020 10:14

Teta If you wear a mask while you are symptomatic and able to reduce the number of people you infect by one as a result that's 32 people you haven't infected 25 days later.

AmelieTaylor · 25/02/2020 10:19

@Alracalpaca. I think your DH is being very unreasonable. You have lots of reasons to be prepping well!

You might want to consider ‘putting him in rations’ until he stops being silly 🤪

Stay well 🤷🏻‍♀️

AmelieTaylor · 25/02/2020 10:20

@NannyGoatC. I’ll keep an eye out for that brand of UHT for you.

Delatron · 25/02/2020 10:21

The Cheshire school says it will be closed for the remainder of the week. So why not two weeks? That’s the incubation period.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 10:22

I know Delatron I've no idea why it's only a week.

michaelbaubles · 25/02/2020 10:22

Yoghurt is easier to make with UHT milk because you don't need to do the boil/cool thing. Just warm to blood heat, stir in a spoonful of live yoghurt (you can also add some milk powder) and leave in a warmish place overnight e.g airing cupboard. You can also use a flask or if you have an Instant Pot they have a yoghurt setting which is very useful.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/02/2020 10:24

Perhaps it's because the average incubation rate is give days. Because there are so many of them if there have been transmission then at least some will be symptomatic in that time and then presumably, they'd extend the closure?

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 10:24
