Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

It does sound like it's ramping up. Worth remembering if anxious that the majority of these cases will be ok.

nibdedibble · 21/02/2020 12:44

I'm off to buy a few bottles of milk for the freezer. It's weird but just the thought of doing it calms me down. What a strange state. We know intellectually that most of these things fizzle out but the teeny tiny possibility is quite anxiety-inducing.

FreezeEverything · 21/02/2020 12:46

Delurking to contribute to the chat about people's responses. Maybe I have this wrong and there are loads of super prepared and appropriately alert prepper husbands and male partners out there - but I kind of don't think so! I do wonder if it's mostly women who are appropriately worried 1. because more of us have the overview of all the organisation and the mental load of what it will take to be prepared and 2. because more of us have experienced the infalliability of health services under pressure (stretched maternity services, advocating for elderly relations etc.)

Does any of this make sense? My dh doesn't seem to be in the slightest bit worried despite working for a company that will take a big hit if shtf. I would say planning for even a mildy bad scenario locally is currently taking up 0% of his mental space.

nibdedibble · 21/02/2020 12:56

Mine's not super-prepared but he's fully on board with having supplies in. It's all about the food for him though.

Does anyone recommend something I can put in the medicine cabinet for deep chesty um ness?
One of my dc gets quite bad viral chests anyway and I've been meaning to be better at preparing for that. I usually give her covonia as a bit of a placebo.

Legoandloldolls · 21/02/2020 13:00

I went out and bought 15 more jars of pasta sauce today. I think I might be able to get enough for 3cmonths of really quite bland foods in. I'm going to see if I can organise it properly first. Just going to the shops on a normal Friday was hell. So I feel a bit better knowing I'm sorted for pesto and pasta at least. I also have three months of nappies.

Re the virus mutating, it could get milder two. I think someone has to have two types of flu at the same time which is unlikely. Normal flu would be less potent so I'm hoping it would dilute it.

I'm.going to cave and ash dh to get me the filter masks. I need to sand and paint a solid oak door. Does anyone have a link or photo of the mask that will last a month?

If nothing happens I will have a lovely reclaimed door and lots of pesto!

preponderings · 21/02/2020 13:05

eeew BlackEyedSusan. Children are revolting aren't they Grin. She was very apologetic about it though.

If either of my DC get it, there's no hope for me! I am not cut out for nursing. I began to worry after DD was over 24 hours over 39.5 and called the doctor who was Hmm give her something to bring the temperature down now! I thought you were supposed to leave it unless they were in pain. Or is a temp of around 38-38.5 (what she's been since) enough to kill off whatever it is?

Don't tell DH but we've about 10 sets of Lego hidden in the attic

Effieray · 21/02/2020 13:05

@SebandAlice

Here is the link to Scion. They still have masks in stock:

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2020 13:07

We do seem to have left the pre pandemic phase now.

HasaDigaEebowai · 21/02/2020 13:08

Just be aware that B&Q also have those masks in stock for a fraction of the price.

Plus they have reuseable ones which are better. You just need to look for P3

KundaliniRising · 21/02/2020 13:10

Remember to get nuts and seeds in as a part of prep, they are nutritionally dence, full of protein and trace elements that are important for a functioning immune system.

If anyone has a dehydrator, they are super for dehydrating vegetables, fruit, tofu and meat. Preparing food in this manner will make them last months/years if kept in sterilised jars or containers. The dehydrated food can then be used in strews, soups, casseroles etc.

They are fab for using up veg and fruit that looks as though they are about to be on the turn.

Onmyown1 · 21/02/2020 13:23

i do my own diy so thought they’d get used anyway so have ordered the masks. They are called FPP3 Safety Respirator. I’ve just ordered from wickes, they are cheaper at screwfix but you need to collect and I don’t have a screwfix store near me.

PurpleCalm · 21/02/2020 13:28

Just cooked a large gammon joint, sliced and laid baking paper in between the slices and froze in a tupperware tub.

Not doing too badly on stocking up, will add more next week when I do my monthly cupboard top up.

I noticed Boots brand calpol 6+ was cheaper than the branded versions, got a couple of those put away on top of what I already had - need to get a couple more.

Anyone else iffy about the kids returning to school next week?

FelicityFebruary · 21/02/2020 13:54

FreezeEverything, you might be right about health service experience.

wheresmymojo · 21/02/2020 14:02

Is there a men's version of MN?

Isn't there one about cars that a lot of men use for other things? I was going to have a little nose to see if they have similar threads...

Maybe pistonheads?

wheresmymojo · 21/02/2020 14:32

And this is why some people need to be welded into their apartments.

Because entitled middle aged men who are supposed to self quarantine for 14 days on return to their home country go out on the 1st day despite knowing that there are at least two people who have tested positive since their negative tests in Japan Angry

Um, I think this is more in the realms of panic buying rather than prepping. You’re not supposed to clear the shelves!

Interesting article on the impact of COVID on the NHS already

From a quick glance at his Twitter Matthew is out and about with his wife too. So not just males!

spacechimp · 21/02/2020 15:07

I think cruise ship Matthew and his wife declined to be evacuated with the other US passengers and are still in Japan.
I agree it's not great that he's out and about

PinkGinAndTacos · 21/02/2020 15:10

seems very selfish. Such a flippant attitude!

FourTeaFallOut · 21/02/2020 15:12

Is there a men's version of MN?

I think singletrackworld is very similar in outlook. DH is on there and he calls MN mumtrackworld.

wheresmymojo · 21/02/2020 15:23

Singletrackworld have a Coronavirus thread but more the usual 'man banter' than any actual preparation I'd say
