Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

When was the last time a pandemic was declared?

BambooBoobam · 23/02/2020 22:41

I think they will have to declare a pandemic.

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 22:42

Swine flu 2009

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 22:44

I always thought when it was declared pandemic, that's when they decide to not track people any more and just deal with the cases as they happen? I don't think you even lockdown at that point.

Twixes · 23/02/2020 22:46

@ShanghaiDiva
Do you believe the Chinese government would report the true numbers with Covid in Xinjiang? I'm not so sure they would. They're not exactly transparent about the Uighur people and the so-called re-education camps

Pppppickupapenguin · 23/02/2020 22:58

I’m surprised that no more cases have been reported in Africa yet. Also, that there are none as yet in South America.

whereareyousleep · 23/02/2020 23:09

Two patients transferred from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan and tested positive with the coronavirus have been taken to a specialist NHS infection centre at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. Another two have been taken to centres in Liverpool and Newcastle.

NutellaQuest · 23/02/2020 23:14

Ah, found you again. Wondering how things will look after half term holidays.

Critical care resources in central China are being strained by coronavirus patients needing a month or more on mechanical ventilators, a study finds.

ShanghaiDiva · 23/02/2020 23:41

@Twixes
Why would they not report the correct figures? There are many Han Chinese living in Xinjiang province as ime most govt positions, airport official roles and police roles are held by Han Chinese. Covering up the true state of the virus there, puts everyone at risk regardless of ethnic group.
Imo numbers of cases in the province are low due to socio-economic factors: people in the east of China have higher incomes than those in the west and are more likely to travel due to higher disposable income hence the spread of the virus in certain provinces and not in others. Tibet, for example, has only had one case and the person recovered and was discharged a while ago.
The treatment of uighurs and the ‘re-education’ camps and how these camps are viewed in China and in the west is an area where there is certainly a lack of transparency from China. I have visited Xinjiang province a couple of times and it is a very different China from the glossy, mega cities of the East.

This is all getting a bit real now, isn’t it? I think I’m going to sit down and knock up a meal plan for if we have to or decide to self isolate. I’ve got food and meals but I’m sure there are gaps, breakfast for example. DS is gluten intolerant too.

Sterristripoff · 24/02/2020 00:08

Has anyone seen the YouTube videos with Doctor John Campbell today and yesterday? He talks about a potentially more virulent strain of the disease with a much higher case fatality rate in Iran. Does anyone know if this has been collaborated by any other sources?

I get paid on Tuesday. Think I’m going to have to find a budget for getting more food in. DH thinks it’s a massive waste of money and has the attitude that we will be fine. Wish I could believe him!

Givemeabreakpls · 24/02/2020 00:17

I’ve been on Twitter looking at the photos and videos of empty shelves in some of Italy’s shops and supermarkets... I need to get some more food in. I have lots of paracetamol, toilet roll, sanpro and toiletries, but no decent longer-life food.

Parker231 · 24/02/2020 00:31

Dr Campbell is semi retired and was a trainer of medical staff. Better to wait for information from the NHS or WHO who actually know what is going on. The YouTube videos are just going to cause stress and panic.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/02/2020 00:48

Quite the reverse. Being prepared early is likely to reduce stress and panic.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/02/2020 00:52

Imagine that your area had cases like Italy and suddenly went into lock down. Who is going to be more stressed, the posters with a month worth of food stashed and a plan, or those who have half a bottle of milk and a couple of slices of bread?

Dennisreynoldsduster · 24/02/2020 01:03

I think it’s interesting it doesn’t seem to have been in the news as much, or with as much prominence.
My main concern at the moment (aside from newborn DS) is that our town will get locked down and DH won’t be able to get back home from home, leaving me with DS on my own. I don’t know how much of a realistic fear this is!

It seemed like things were more reassuring for a bit but now it’s going completely in the other direction... so my stores give me a little reassurance.

What kind of over the counter meds have people stocked up on? I have a fair bit in anyway but I doubt anything is going to make a difference if we get it badly by the sounds of it

NebbiaZanzare · 24/02/2020 01:31

This is all getting a bit real now, isn’t it?

Yes.

I'd like to revise my earlier post about well stocked supermarkets in my corner of Italy.

They were well stocked when I went at lunchtime. Then our first case in town was officially confirmed. Since then a photo on local SM has popped up showing empty pallets and shelves which had looked perfectly normal when I was there just hours before the pic was taken.

I was mostly fine even after seeing that... right until I discovered our local confirmed case is a colleague of one of my adult 1-2-1 students.

It's now feels all too real.

Rationally I know the odds are very much on our side. But it's been a crappy day and my Inner Massive Control Freak is raging about a random chance potentially wreaking all my careful plans to keep us 100% safe and sound.

Fuck it. I'm going to dig out the emergency ice cream from under the kilos of chicken where I hid it from The Plague of Locusts AKA My teenager.

Effieray · 24/02/2020 01:37

@NebbiaZanzare

How worrying for you. It’s awful when things become so real they are on your doorstep. Sending you love 💐

Dennisreynoldsduster · 24/02/2020 02:01

@NebbiaZanzare that sounds really scary :-/
Unfortunately I think a lot of us are going to be faced with similar over the coming weeks.
I hope you stay healthy and it doesn’t spread among your community. Do you have a decent stash in place?

I think I’m going to pick up those extra bits tomorrow - the rice, pasta, long life milk etc - not in vast quantities but those are the things I could
Do with topping up, then I’m going to sort through and organise my stash on Tuesday.

I also need to get a few extra medicinal things for DS and some extra things like nasal spray etc for me and DH Incase colds hit. I’m wondering if DH work have got any plans in place as they do a lot of international travel... he’s been off for a week so I guess he will find out tomorrow when he’s back

NebbiaZanzare · 24/02/2020 03:28

Effieray

Ah you're lovely. But considering what Veneto is having to deal with I really don't have that much on my plate. I think I'm just over tired and overwhelmed by it going from a few well contained cases in the entire country to In My Bloody Town And My Student's Workplace at such a rapid pace. Prepping was a nice distraction, but now it's actually needed and that feels like a gear change I wasn't quite ready for. It'll feel less ominous and scary when the sun comes back up.

Dennisreynoldsduster

Thanks to lurking there for weeks. Yes, I think so.

It's not going to be the galloping gourmet in this house by any means, but they won't be hungry or malnourished. And I'll make cakes to ward off any mutiny about frozen veg and Too Many Beans. I just wish I'd had another week. Or started a week earlier. I really should have found time to go to the pharmacy before. That may prove an issue. If the pharmacy decides tomorrow to use its night time security window all day that would make it less of an unappealing prospect. Right now I'm imagining being stuck inside the shop mixed in a rambling queue of suspiciously coughing people for an hour. Which does not thrill me at all.

I do wish I had more cat food though. They usually have an "all you can eat" constantly refilled buffet style of serving. Think it would make more sense to change to set mealtimes and weighed food per head. There will be some grumpiness. But manageable.

Mostly I'd just like to go back to "just in case" preparation, not looking at the end product of preparation knowing I'm going to have to use it for its intended purpose.

But this is still better than not having done it.

Right, insomnia or no insomnia I am going to bed and staying there and get some sleep.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 24/02/2020 03:33

I can imagine I’d feel the same. Prepping for the hypothetical can be quite soothing but I imagine when you rely on it, it changes things.
Every time I think I’m almost done I think of other things we might need, and I’m sure that if and when the time comes to rely on the stash, I will find that it still falls short in places.
Hope things don’t end up being too bad where you are

VenetoResident · 24/02/2020 05:27

@NebbiaZanzare another neighbour! Who'd have thought it would take CV to find all the Italian MN!

Awake again - we all seem to have night fevers. Apparently that's a real thing' due to cortisol & adrenaline levels. And thus breathing difficulties often worsen too. The hospital certainly didn't seem surprised when I mentioned it with DS1 & DS2.

So a few things that brings to mind:

  1. Check the thermometer you bought for your PFB. Does it still work? Change the batteries and buy more ear covers as you're all going to be using it.
  1. Make sure all your washing is up to date and you've got spare bed sheets. Night sweats = lots of sheet changes.
  1. Download an app to record temps. I felt very remiss in the hospital with DS1 not being able to give dates and numbers (Italians seem very concerned by fevers as a rule). With DS2 I felt happier with my list of numbers and dates.
  1. For me really - start taking a flask of coffee to bed so you don't have to get up in the middle of the night for a drink. Water is another option for most people!

A good link for statistics. It's been posted before, but for newcomers.

kept getting horrific nosebleeds with it
Oh, that's interesting. I didn't know nosebleeds were linked with the flu. Explains why DD keeps getting explosive nosebleeds out of the blue. Thought it was weird.

Hope you all managed to get a decent nights sleep Veneto
