Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Sorry, Veneto, Doh.

AvocadoOwl · 23/02/2020 21:19

Probably this isn't helped by the welding of people into their apartments, dragging people screaming into quarantine and hints of probable/possible cover ups in China & Iran.

Quite.

I'd add reports of thousands of bodies being incinerated daily to that list too. There is a lot of frankly terrifying information out there and no way to determine the truth.

HairyFloppins · 23/02/2020 21:22

Hope your DS gets better soon Veneto and his test comes back negative.

LesLavandes · 23/02/2020 21:29

OP - did you have all the tests and blood tests to determine you had Swine Flu? How was your illness?

My 5 year old was in hospital for 10 days with diagnosed Swine Flu and very unwell for another month. It was horrible seeing him so sick. Then I kept being told this one and that one had had swine flu because they self diagnosed themselves and I knew they were talking bollocks. It made me cross with them belittling how serious it really was.

OP, I am not doubting you.

EliK · 23/02/2020 21:34

@ofwarren I have jus-roll puff pastry, cinnamon swirls and croissants in the fridge all with late March dates. Worth getting if they're on offer.

wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 21:36

No, I didn't bother. I was at the very tail end in December 2019.

My housemate caught it from a friend who had been tested and I caught it from her. I just decided to ride it out at home.

It was fairly horrible - it didn't help that the day before I came down with it I slipped on snow and cracked my head on the (snow covered) pavement. It didn't crack open because of the snow but I had concussion and every time I coughed I felt like my brain was going to explode 😖

I pretty much didn't move from the bed for 4 days apart from stumbling to the loo or to eat and then took a couple of weeks to feel back to 100%.

@wheresmymojo and @AvocadoOwl I've avoided mentioning those details but I'm glad you have. If only we could get some transparency out of China. God only knows how Uighur are faring.

wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 21:39

The weird thing with swine flu is that it was worse for children (the opposite of usual), so children were more likely to end up more ill and hospitalised.

I would say mine was like the normal seasonal flu + about an extra 2 weeks to recover (when I've had seasonal flu I've bounced back fairly quickly).

I then in turn passed it on to my family - my DM was similar to me but my DF who is hardly ever ill and hardly ever off work was in bed for 2 weeks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2020 21:51

dd was pretty poorly with swine flu and kept getting horrific nosebleeds with it.

ChipotleBlessing · 23/02/2020 21:53

Flu can be weird. My DS had it a couple of years ago and was completely knocked out. No one else in the house, including our premature baby, got ill at all. DH had had the flu vaccine but we were living somewhere where they don’t recommend it for pregnant/breastfeeding women so I hadn’t. No one in his class at school caught it either.

littlemissmuffins · 23/02/2020 21:54

Sorry to hear that Veneto. Hoping you all recover quickly.

Mum2jenny · 23/02/2020 21:54

Just been speaking to my dsis and she’s in total denial of everything. The COVID19 will not affect her at all as it’s not a problem and everything will be fine.
It is not even up for discussions and it cannot happen here as the UK government won’t let it happen as their systems are robust.
I really wish this was the reality but it isn’t!!
This may be why the reported news is

Mum2jenny · 23/02/2020 21:55

A bit pragmatic.
Sorry it posted a bit earlier than I wanted.

ChilliMayo · 23/02/2020 21:57

For those needing gluten free options, Amazon Prime do boxes of 10 gf bread mixes, and also pastry mixes (think it's Mrs Crimble). I have a few boxes in the stash. It's as edible as anything gf is.

wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 22:03

Check out this absolute fuck Anger among returning Britons as they're told four people on plane had COVID-19 news.sky.com/story/four-new-uk-covid-19-cases-after-cruise-ship-evacuees-test-positive-11941578

OP posts:
wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 22:05

The Govt told everyone anyone testing positive like the Abels would remain in Japan.

Turns out they hadn't got test results back yet - so those four that tested positive today shouldn't have been allowed on the flight at all.

I'm not surprised the other passengers are pissed off.

Imagine if one or more of them now become ill because the Govt put them on a plane next to people who had CV Hmm

OP posts:
wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 22:05

First post was supposed to say "fuck up"

OP posts:
wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 22:07

It also explains the delay in releasing numbers.

Presumably the test results came back from Japan positive and they've had a massive 'oh fuck' moment knowing that it shows them up as entirely incompetent and will have had to explain to the other passengers before they heard in the press.

OP posts:
ofwarren · 23/02/2020 22:09

What an absolute balls up. How stupid can you get.

AvocadoOwl · 23/02/2020 22:11

Surely there must be some misinterpretation here? If the tests take a few days then those hoping to be on the flight would have been tested a few days prior, no? Decisions re who goes on the plane can only be made based on the situation days before?

I understood that evacuees in the UK were routinely tested twice a day so it makes sense that they'd be tested throughout- including directly prior to leaving.

FelicityFebruary · 23/02/2020 22:22

It sounds like they have tested negative but were tested again before boarding. What it doesn't give is specific timings.

You'd have to have a cut off at some point where it is decided to evacuate.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2020 22:25

It's clear that there was ongoing transmission from other evacuees. So I'm glad that they've managed to get people off the ship, but those poor sods.

ShanghaiDiva · 23/02/2020 22:29

@GorkyMcPorky
There are 76 cases in Xinjiang province, where most Uighurs live so I imagine they are faring significantly better than the Han Chinese in Hubei province.

bobbbbby · 23/02/2020 22:34

Does anyone think the the WHO will declare it a pandemic this week?

ShanghaiDiva · 23/02/2020 22:34

Re reports of Chinese dragging people out of apartments. Would you prefer someone infected with the virus to be allowed to remain at home?
We have received communication from the compound mgt where we live in China that failure to go to the hospital when you have any symptoms of the virus can result in serious legal consequences. It is a situation where getting the situation under control will trump the rights of the individual.
