Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Wheresmymojo not at all! You made me laugh!!

ifonly4 I did an internal wave to you wherever you were as we drove through the hospital grounds.

Word of warning for whoever comes after - the swab goes right up your nose. Poor DS2 got a real shock. Maybe if the swabber spoke your language you'd be more forewarned!

We took our hospital grab bags as our magic charm to be immediately discharged post tampone (swab in Italian). The only thing we didn't have that DS wanted was a cup of tea. He was losing the plot a little after 4 hours.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 23/02/2020 20:24

@VenetoResident sorry I missed your post :( really sorry to hear that, I hope your DS is ok and you and DH don’t get it. Is it reassuring that they didn’t keep him in?

@wheresmymojo Lidl currently is selling the biggest size jars for only £2.99... I may have got two!

MissPoldark · 23/02/2020 20:29

Get well soon wishes for your DS Veneto & fingers crossed the result is clear

FelicityFebruary · 23/02/2020 20:31

Thanks for posting that blog Meme05.

That's the one I was referring to earlier hardware posted on the other thread.

Oh Veneto, best wishes to you all.

allthesharks · 23/02/2020 20:34

@VenetoResident I hope DS starts to improve now he's got stronger antibiotics. Hopefully, the fact that they've sent you home is a good indication that it's not affecting his respiratory system too badly and it's able to be managed at home. Did they say how long it will be before the results are back? Hope it's not too long a wait.

GorkyMcPorky · 23/02/2020 20:43

@VenetoResident, wishing you all all the best.

Is the Kruseaz pancake stuff any good? I have a Tesco shop booked for tomorrow anyway but eggs are mainly unavailable - surely only coincidence at this point.

wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 20:51

What is interesting is how far off the original predictions were for Swine Flu re: deaths.

They predicted 3,100-65,000 deaths and it was in the region of about 400 (obviously still awful for each of those families).

Part of me wants to believe we'll see the same with CV???

I don't remember there being such a serious response to swine flu though or so many deaths being reported from Mexico like they are in China...?

Wishing your DS and your whole family a very speedy recovery @VenetoResident

magicrainbowbeans · 23/02/2020 20:54

I have so many questions right now.

Like, OK so an area is quarantined, supposedly for 2 weeks. But if in that time cases in the area multiply, more than health services can handle, the area could be quarantined for a very long time?

And, is the bus driver from the DP bus quarantined and if not, and we know that some passengers had the virus, and it takes 14 days and possibly 28 days for symptoms to show, isn't it almost inevitable that this highly infectious virus will spread across England from even that one person?

GorkyMcPorky · 23/02/2020 20:55

I was looking at the swine flu stats and thinking Shock I barely registered it at the time even though I was pregnant (can't even remember whether I had the vax in the end). Don't know what's making this one impossible for me to ignore.

EliK · 23/02/2020 20:57

@wheresmymojo that's interesting. Hopefully the predictions are off again this time.

pussycatinboots · 23/02/2020 21:00

Gorky I might be wrong, but aren't the seasonal flu vaccines created in/with eggs? That's why they ask about egg allergy?

EliK · 23/02/2020 21:00

I had a flu during the swine flu outbreak and I wasn't worried. I feel differently now, not sure why?

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 21:02

Does anyone know what kind of shelf life jus-rol products have? Worth getting? I've never tried them.

GorkyMcPorky · 23/02/2020 21:03

Gorky I might be wrong, but aren't the seasonal flu vaccines created in/with eggs? That's why they ask about egg allergy?

I think you're right, but surely there wouldn't be any vaccine in mass production yet.

EducatingArti · 23/02/2020 21:05

I have been talking to a doctor friend who says it is totally possible to pass on ordinary flu to others while being asymptomatic. In fact you can pass on flu and never be aware that you have actually had it at all.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2020 21:05

I hope the swab comes back quickly Veneto I hope that you all feel much much better very quickly. Flowers

Felicity my concern around university was if it were to suddenly hit one of the uni towns as hit in Italy. I just can't imagine the logistics of quarantining and the run on supplies.

Dds uni town only has one small supermarket in the centre and another to one edge (that I know of). There's a big one out of town. Many students don't have proper kitchens there and eat main meals in hall.

Fortunately dd is one to be prepared for stuff and is a sensible sort. She's already made sure she has enough til the end of term. I trust her judgement and I have to trust that her college will have a decent set of plans. She will come home for Easter and I'll make sure she has a good couple of weeks of food to take back.

Sorry for the thinking out loud. I feel more pragmatic again.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 23/02/2020 21:07

Someone raised a point above about how to ensure everyone has food in the event of a lockdown and panic but scenario.
I am assuming people would get bored of panic buying after a couple of days or shops would be asked to say ration food to say x meat and fish x veg and fruit. Not sure that would work properly. I can see us all ending up eating random stuff instead depending on when we turned up vs deliveries.
Or maybe we would get a pass allowing us to shop once every 3 days with specified dates or set days twice a week this limiting number of people. Admin could be difficult!
China appears to have managed it.

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 21:08

Definitely true about some people not knowing they have flu. When our whole family had it last year (diagnosed by swab) my youngest had nothing more than a runny nose. My middle child was in hospital and me and my husband felt like we were dying.

wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 21:11

I had swine flu but wasn't remotely concerned.

For me it's the concern that the mortality rate is / could be much higher this time and that it will be more like the Spanish Flu in terms of numbers dead.

Probably this isn't helped by the welding of people into their apartments, dragging people screaming into quarantine and hints of probable/possible cover ups in China & Iran.

So I'm hoping like swine flu in turns out to be like the seasonal flu but it the information to date feels like it could be much worse. Really the numbers in South Korea, Japan and Italy are the ones to watch but it will be a couple of weeks until we see fully how they play out because of the 3-4 weeks between onset and death/recovery.

OP posts:
wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 21:11

And that's probably part of the problem. Our brains don't deal well with uncertainty and there is a lot of uncertainty.

eeeyoresmiles · 23/02/2020 21:16

@VenetoResident, I hope you all feel better soon especially your ds.

I think it's true that some people will be relieved by the idea of a lockdown, perhaps enough of them to make it work.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/02/2020 21:17

Good luck vanato. Get well soon all of you.
