Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

One of the DC’s schools seem to be much more forthcoming and have sent several emails including a form to complete if you have traveled to China etc during half term symptoms or no.

The other DC. Not so much.

I wonder how long before Italy and Iran are included in the list (and how many were in Italy skiing over half term)

wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 14:20

I might watch 28 Days later this evening after talking to DH about the worries that 14 days quarantine may not be enough.

I think I'm a bit of a masochist - I've watched Contagion, read Station 11 and am now reading another post-apocalyptic virus novel called Earth Abides Grin

I've been checking the UK government website for test results (they update at 2pm every day) but it's not been updated yet for today. Strange. Hopefully nothing.

wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 14:25

On a slightly lighter note I also predict that the main BBC News bulletin will remain very sketchy as to what might be happening, somewhere, 24 hours ago.

I'm usually the last person to believe in conspiracy theories but I have to say that I am starting to think there is a concerted effort to play things down at the moment.

What is happening in Italy is almost unheard of in Europe in our lifetimes but if you look at the BBC or Sky apps it doesn't feature in any headlines and the newspapers today don't have it on any front pages.

There's no way that a Tyson Fury fight is more important or newsworthy than a global pandemic reaching Europe resulting in lockdown of 50,000 people.

That's true, there is no 2pm update...

lemonjumper · 23/02/2020 14:28

The 2pm update has been late before - almost 3pm one day. I wouldn't read too much into it!

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 14:29

Phew, thanks lemonjumper I got a bit worried then 😁

EliK · 23/02/2020 14:29

That's good to know. The Scottish one is updated, still 0.

BunsyGirl · 23/02/2020 14:30

wheresmymojo I completely agree. The reporting has been completely inadequate. An article published on the BBC new site this morning said that there had been 11 deaths outside of China when other sources were quoting double that! Either they are being asked to cover things up to avoid panic or they are completely useless.

wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 14:31

My PILs are still travelling to Vietnam & Cambodia for 3 weeks including multiple flights and a river cruise in 1.5 weeks

They are in their 70s (good health) but I'm still concerned as I suspect Cambodia is one of the countries that could be the next Italy or Iran.

I just hope that if they do pick something up they get back to the UK before they need any treatment.

They are doing an organised tour who are supplying them with the reusable FP3 masks and are very sensible so am sure will take all precautions with hand washing etc but still I would prefer they weren't going.

We were all due to meet up the day after they get back with my parents for Mother's Day but I have cancelled that as my DM, while young (56) already has medical issues being investigated re possible cardiovascular issues so I've decided that is too much of an unnecessary risk.

OP posts:
wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 14:35

I've just ordered an infra red thermometer and an oxygen saturation monitor (figured for £20 it's worth it).

Less for us and more for PILs if they catch it either abroad or here and we need to make decisions about treat at home vs hospital.

I keep getting stuck at hand sanitiser though - hardly any on Amazon actually state what % alcohol is in them Sad

ShanghaiDiva · 23/02/2020 14:37

@wheresmymojo
Cambodia has only had one case. Although they kept the border open to visitors from China and it is a popular destination for the CNY holiday I think if there was going to be a spike we would have seen it by now.

FelicityFebruary · 23/02/2020 14:38

Some labels I have seen do say hospital grade. I might take a punt on that if nothing clearer is available.

pemberlyshades · 23/02/2020 14:39

The last time they were late was when the had changed diagnostic criteria and there was a huge leap in numbers- do you think is a similar reason or maybe about to declare a pandemic?!

wheresmymojo · 23/02/2020 14:42

I know but...

  • They have lots of Chinese tourists
  • They haven't actually tested very much (if you don't test you can't have confirmed cases)
  • They let all of the Westerdam passengers off who travelled in Cambodia and came into contact with a lot of people and subsequently tested positive

With these factors combined it could easily be a situation like Italy where there is a sudden spike. The Westerdam passengers only left recently so it would be another couple of weeks before we'd see a spike from them.

I'm not saying it's definite, but certainly a country of concern.

I'm less concerned about Vietnam who have been much more on top of testing and isolating.

I've been to Cambodia myself and really would not trust the health infrastructure there either to do proper testing and isolation or for treatment.

@wheresmymojo me too! Loved station eleven and it was a great example of how prepping can keep you alive. I’m going to look up earth abides now....

BunsyGirl · 23/02/2020 14:43

BookofJudith...my DC’s school sent our strict instructions about no child going to China or HK over half term or coming into contact with any friends or family who had been to China or HK in the previous two weeks. There is also a procedure for any child that goes to another South East Asian country and shows signs of illness on return. However, there was a school trip to Italy over half term. Even the Principal went. Plus there are quite a few Italian families as it’s a Catholic school. It’s going to be interesting to see the latest update from the school.

HuntedUp · 23/02/2020 14:45

Italy has dropped off the front page of BBC news now. Definitely trying to play it down

teta · 23/02/2020 14:53

Gosh @wheresmymojo I would strongly encourage your parents in law not to go. The worry is if something blows up, they might be stuck out there. There's a very high chance that there will be several cases there already.
Saying that I am super cautious and DH has been banned from flying long haul to Asia since early January even though his job involves lots of traveling. We were also very cautious during Sars living in HK.
Anyone reading 'The eyes of Darkness' by Dean Koontz? Written in 1981, it's a story about a virus made in Wuhan.
Regarding hand sanitizer Superdrug had big bottles of hospital grade sanitizer in my local store.I can't find any online though.

Twixes · 23/02/2020 14:59

It's v odd that the bbc aren't reporting it. I'm in Ireland and it was the main news item on RTÉ radio one news.

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 15:00

Still no 2pm update. I must admit, that's making me little worried. I know it's been late before but...

TheGirlFromStoryville · 23/02/2020 15:00

Superdrug has Defendol hosp grade hand gel, £3.49 for 500ml.

I've ordered a big shop which is getting delivered tomorrow, also our masks (DH thinks I'm overreacting massively. Didn't tell him about the masks as he'll think I've gone ott - when they get delivered I'm telling him it's part of his birthday present next month.)

Strange that the situation in Italy isn't being reported on more widely. I think the govt is trying to prevent mass panic.

Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.

Snowdropsdelight · 23/02/2020 15:01

My school can't deal with basic things so we are well and truly buggered with covid.

What would happen if the world went into lock down for two weeks? To try and halt virus and give more ⌚ for vaccine?

Eg places with more chance of spreading like Disney, schools, colleges, uni and places like that.... Major gatherings...

lemonjumper · 23/02/2020 15:03

I don't think I've seen the 2pm update as late as this. Combined with the lack of reporting on the situation in Italy, it's a bit odd to say the least.

BambooBoobam · 23/02/2020 15:05

Maybe they’ve got 2 updates prepared and are arguing over which one to release - the ‘everything’s fine’ one or the ‘SHTF’ one.
