Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

He doesn't claim to have any authority @nibdedibble, he's just an experienced doctor who has a personal interest. I think he is popular because he's been very measured throughout and tries to focus on the facts rather than hearsay and hysteria. I guess he is just a regular guy who uses his knowledge and experience to translate all the news and peer reviewed scientific journals etc for the masses.

BambooBoobam · 23/02/2020 09:15

ofwarren I wonder if the masks can be donated somewhere if they are unopened?

AmelieTaylor · 23/02/2020 09:16

@wheresmymojo

I like section 7. I may get many copies made & start handing them out to people taking the mic.

@captainamericassexybeard. Was there alcohol involved? That will generally make you feel more relaxed at the time but more anxious the next day.

@Wherearemychickens. What brand did you buy & where from please. I haven’t found it easy to buy in a large container.

@ShanghaiDiva. Those quarantine measures in Shanghai would be more Han enough to make me stay in the UK for now what are your most recent plans?

@BambooBoobam. The N95 is a US rating, in the UK you need to look for P3. I have several disposable ones, but I’m going to order the reusable one with filters because it’ll be less faff and last longer. If you scroll through the 5 threads you’ll see why. Whatever masks you buy you need to google how to use them properly to avoid making contamination worse.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 09:18

As suggested by Canadian Prepper, at a pinch and if the couple of N95s I have run out - I know N95 Isn't good enough - I will use some cooker food filter spares that I have , cut to size and taped into a dust mask with surgical tape around the face. Better not to rely on masks.

Twixes · 23/02/2020 09:21

Thanks for all the info everywhere

Twixes · 23/02/2020 09:22

Argh! Posted too soon!

I'm starting to get worried about covid now. First thing is to buy 10kg of rice from the Asian market

ofwarren · 23/02/2020 09:23

Another big shop coming tonight. My stash still isn't enough as my 17 year old keeps eating it!!
I've started putting it into boxes in the spare room to hide it.

nibdedibble · 23/02/2020 09:25

@AvocadoOwl That’s about what I thought. It’s worth remembering that if he’s talking about the Chinese scientists involved or what the WHO is basing their strategy on, he’s not privy to any information from them beyond what’s in public reports. I’m sure that measured, practical advice is great but conjecture/vague conspiracy theory about having to placate ‘the Chinese’ somehow is not.

LinesmanMinnelli · 23/02/2020 09:27

Who is this Dr John person? I haven’t watched any videos but I’ve had a google about and I don’t understand why he’s being given such authority here?

I agree. He’s just another person with an interest and his opinions should be carefully critiqued before basing panic (or not) upon them.
@YoursTunbridgeWells have you accessed any help with your anxiety yet?

Skyejuly · 23/02/2020 09:28

My stash is small. Mainly to cover a few days of us not going out if I'll rather than a complete lockdown.

Arm carrying on as normal. Been to busy places etc.

Got lots of painkillers but I like lots anyway!

wherearemychickens · 23/02/2020 09:29

@AmelieTaylor, it was 'Jangro Alcohol Gel hand rub with moisturiser' and I bought it from Amazon. It's 70% alcohol.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 23/02/2020 09:29

Thank you for your comments above. Maybe some other people are not prepared to face the potential catastrophe and I'm sorry if I've frightened you but I know what I heard last night on that film - suggesting that Dr John did not say things that he did say is deeply offensive and it suggests that you are stigmatising and belittling mental illness. It's the easiest thing to write off someone whose views you don't like by casting them as deeply mentally ill. That suggests I have zero rationality and am worth less than you as a human being and this comes across as exceptionally degrading and dehumanising even where you don't mean it. It perpetuates mental health stigma.

The piece with the number of ill, critical and severe on a piece of paper and him saying his local hospital had 5 ICU beds or something (Think its arround 55 minutes in?) Dr John is clear that in certain scenarios we simply wouldn't have the oxygen supported beds to treat people.
The serotypes piece was definately in there too. Listen back and you'll find it.

I also find it deeply and deliberatlely hurtful that you have said I have rejected offers of help. Good lord how do you know what I've done IRL? I've spoken to people discussed it with them tried to up my meds.

I can see everyone else posting anxious, panicky threads e,g. "new case in Itally", "another death in Iran" - most of the time these things are way before English lanuage reporting has caught up, I suspect people are watching the worldometers tallies all day.

Skyejuly · 23/02/2020 09:30

I have not watched them!

wherearemychickens · 23/02/2020 09:31

Yes, we are carrying on as normal too but I am insisting everyone washes their hands as soon as they get home, we are using hand gel more, and I've asked my eldest DD to wash her hands when she gets to school as she is using public transport to get there.

nibdedibble · 23/02/2020 09:31

I have an instant suspicion of YouTube medics calling themselves Dr FirstName and selling stuff.
Fair enough he’s selling study notes for nurses but if he starts selling anything to you, the readers of this thread, I won’t be too surprised.

AvocadoOwl · 23/02/2020 09:32

@nibdedibble I'm not a massive follower of his and have only watched a few of his videos so haven't heard him spout conspiracy theories- agree that's not helpful if it's the case.

I was out with several friends last night and was amazed that they were completely oblivious. None of them had a clue about anything that has been going on beyond there being a new virus in ChinaConfused

I'm doing another decent prep stash top up shop today. No plans to hide at home but I think panic buying will kick in here as soon as a cluster gets announced in the UK so worth being well stocked for that reason alone.

Skyejuly · 23/02/2020 09:33

Ah yes I did give the kids some hand gel for getting bus to school.

nibdedibble · 23/02/2020 09:36

@YoursTunbridgeWells
I think many of us have known someone in the depths of a mental health crisis and seen first hand that rationality goes out the window, so please don’t try to characterise people as belittling those who suffer from my problems. People just care that you’re getting better help than a bunch of words on a screen can offer, is my guess. Take care.

FourTeaFallOut · 23/02/2020 09:41

If Dr. John Campbell starts selling anything I'll eat my own face masks.

Pppppickupapenguin · 23/02/2020 09:41

- "Serious mistake was made not to quarantine people who arrived in Italy from China" said Walter Ricciardi of the WHO, adding that "within two weeks we will know if we are facing an epidemic" and advising that, for the next two weeks, people "avoid crowded places: metro, buses, trains, schools, discos, and gyms."

AvocadoOwl · 23/02/2020 09:41

@YoursTunbridgeWells pointing out that your views about the virus representing some kind of apocalypse are wildly unsubstantiated in no way stigmatises and belittles people with mental health problems.

It's irresponsible to post hysterical conjecture (especially when you are citing respected sources erroneously) whether you have mental health issues or not, and people have every right to call you out on it without being labelled as ignorant/unsupportive of mental illness.

MincedOath · 23/02/2020 09:41

I don't think Dr Campbell is a medical doctor is he? He's an experienced A&E nurse and an excellent communicator/teacher. I think the Dr is from his PhD. (Linkedin)

NotJustACigar · 23/02/2020 09:42

One area of prepping I haven't heard much about is prepping your lungs. I practice yoga so am aware that you can do breathing exercises but apparently it's possible to improve your actual lung capacity via some breathing exercises. Worth a try www.healthline.com/health/how-to-increase-lung-capacity

I feel like my lung capacity isn't very good as I had what I believe to be SARS when I was traveling in India in 2005 (even if it wasn't SARS it was an illness that caused me a lot of difficulty breathing in that I had to really concentrate to take each breath and get enough oxygen - it was very frightening! And my lungs haven't been the same since). DH and DSis who lives with us both have pretty serious cases of asthma 😳. At least I finally convinced DH to get an extra inhaler.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 23/02/2020 09:53

I was trying to think of practical things to add to this thread that have not already been covered.

One thing that bothers me is people on a budget spending large amounts of disposable income on face masks being sold by ruthless suppliers or becoming excessively anxious if local supplies have sold out. I have no medical background but have noticed a number of utube videos showing how to make masks using everyday household items like kitchen roll and rubber bands. I realise these won’t be ‘medical’ standard but could be made as an when required for peace of mind. Similarly I’m sure a talented prepper would know how to convert an old bedsheet into a mask design if need be. Any thoughts?

Stircrazyschoolmum · 23/02/2020 09:59

Another practical /community based thing might be to link into your local Facebook groups and/or Nextdoor app if you have it locally.

I bet we all have elderly / vulnerable people living near us who might be unaware of what precautions or supplies they might need. Similarly pets or children that need caring for if someone needs hospitalisation or frazzled health workers that have no time to cook meals or buy in supplies.

If something positive can come out of this whole worrying situation perhaps it’s a solidarity of community spirit, neighbourlyness and helping each other out should we need to?
