Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

@OhYouBadBadKitten. Hopefully your earlier vigilance not touching things means there wasn’t much if anything there to hand gel away and fortunately (she says touching wood) it still seems like a fairly low risk here. Be safe though & try to remember when you’re there tomorrow x

@Banana0pancakes. I’m not in your situation, but I think that unless DH was definitely at risk of having got it (ie been with a confirmed case) or the babies/children were especially vulnerable I wouldn’t, no . Your average child has a very low risk of getting it and if they do it’s been mild cases. (I think there’s 1 recorded death of a child - one too many obviously, but as a percentage...)

Obviously he’d be uniform off outside and hides down with dettol - well not quite, but certainly stripped off down to underwear outside, clothes in a disinfectant wash immediately, hands gelled and straight upstairs into the shower. Slightest sign of a symptom then kipping elsewhere for a fortnight at least.

Thank him, from me, for the job he does.

AmelieTaylor · 22/02/2020 20:35

@HuntedUp. I pick up in the car (13 miles, too far to walk) & will be squirting 70% Alcohol hand gel immediately! Plus using Dettol fabric spray on the car seats - I think that and constant nagging about hand washing will get me enough 🙄🙄🙄🙄 without insisting on teens showering as soon as we get in. Smaller ones I think bath & ‘comfy clothes’ (aka pj’s) for the evening (and a long time to play in the bath) will be an ‘easy sell’

Much ‘reminding’ about hand washing or anti bac hands before eating at school and trying to remember not to touch your face will be the main thing. Oh & keeping their nails short!

The touching my face is the most difficult thing for me, so I’m trying really hard with the hand hygiene so the touching isn’t likely to be such an issue. I might have to start wearing glasses to help me stop rubbing my eyes! Not sure about the rest of my face!

I might also get some Superdrug own brand nail Polish remover pads, the residue of those used to taste VILE. It MIGHT help me keep my hands out of my mouth! (According to kids, taste worse than the nail biter stuff!)

Thank him, from me, for the job he does

I'm sure he'd have a few words for you too while Banana0pancakes hoses him down with Dettol, buck naked, in the back garden GrinGrin

killingalltheplants · 22/02/2020 20:46

When the dc start back at school on Monday, I’m thinking of getting them to shower as soon as they get home. Has anyone else considered this?

I assume there are immuno suppressed individuals in your household, as if not this would be a ludicrous over reaction.

preponderings · 22/02/2020 20:54

The 1918 flu sort of represents the 'worst case scenario' but if you watch documentaries about it they talk about the illness and deaths. They don't mention other impacts on society - like whether there were shortages, etc.

You have to remember Spanish flu came at the end of a massive world war, they were probably well used to shortages by this point, and didn't really notice any additional ones!

Plus (correct me if I'm wrong) there weren't many cars around then, so the majority of people would buy local products rather than rely on supermarkets and chains of supply as we do now. And were not used to having new things, or lots of them. No idea what the medical situation was like then either. Luck?

I'm hearing Iran has a 6th death

What's your source for the 6th Iran death please, @wheresmymojo ?

wheresmymojo · 22/02/2020 21:03

It was a rumour with no link but a link has now been provided to the Baghdad Post

Thanks so much for your replies about me visiting my relative. You have all confirmed my preference - to stay away for now. I have no pressing need to go, apart from we miss each other! (And rest of family think I'm overreacting, oh well.)

I 'interviewed' my nan about the pandemic when I was younger (for a project) Smile She was born in 1905. She told me her mum, dad and siblings were all ill. She didn't get sick, and walked around town all day, every day trying to find what little food she could, but almost everywhere was closed. She would be lucky to return with a little bit of bread. They were very poor which probably didn't help, but certainly from what she told me it was a very bleak time.

The possible patient 0 in Italy - presumably he could have spread the virus around on his hands (if say, the other chap sneezed and then he touched it), and then washed them later so avoiding infection himself.

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2020 21:30

apparently the bus drivers for the DP passengers didn't wear masks or any protective clothing. This is apparently fine because there was a seating plan on the bus which meant they were not in danger of being exposed Hmm

It's the other chap in this scenario that is the one which has tested negative for any antibodies so can't have had CV IYSWIM.

Sorry if this has already been covered but does anyone know when WHO have to "call it"? As in say "yes this meets the criteria for a pandemic"?

Their website is woolly to say the least and wiki isn't much more help.

Surely it must be getting close to that point by now? Are they holding back because of fear of people's panic? Because I get the impression that "not knowing" is causing either normalisation bias or the other extreme- riots etc.

Weezy511 · 22/02/2020 22:45

I think it's pretty close to being deemed that now. When this was just starting out I remember reading it was sustained transmission in two different areas, so far east being one, and now surely the middle east & Europe should push us well into the pandemic criteria. The governments are on borrowed time now before everyone suddenly wakes up to this

Weezy511 · 22/02/2020 22:45

just realised that sounded quite ominous ha. I've just finished an online shop order so feeling a bit real now

pemberlyshades · 22/02/2020 22:53

Are there any continents that ha don't had a case? Is it only cases of unknown transmission that count towards the pandemic status?

I agree it is all starting to feel a bit real now like "this is NOT a drill" etc.

It would just be much more reassuring if the high ups would actually get it all out in the open.

MotherOfDragonite · 22/02/2020 23:17

They can't, I don't think -- the impact on the economy (of shutting down) frightens them even more than the mortality rate of coronavirus.

bobbbbby · 22/02/2020 23:35

If you look up pandemic planning there is lots of good info on the strategic documents about the stages of communication and from who ( Public health etc). looks to me they are working to that plan and will all step up a gear when the pandemic is confirmed by WHO

Pppppickupapenguin · 22/02/2020 23:35

Italy is being hit hard atm. Next week is Carnivale, which is especially busy in Venice. Wonder if it will be cancelled?

AmelieTaylor · 22/02/2020 23:40

We have to find our fun where we can in all if this 🤣

@killingalltheplants

There’s really no need to be horrible. It’s been a nice set of threads so far, it’s possible to disagree politely & kindly

@golddigger79
thank you for sharing, very interesting, but very sad for your Nan 🌷

@HasaDigaEebowai. FGS - do you not realise that the CV has been studying the seating plan!

🤣🙄🤯

YoursTunbridgeWells · 22/02/2020 23:47

Caught up with Dr John - things i was concerned about - lack of NHS beds, different serotypes and endless endemic for decades, transmibility etc. he mentioned as his fears. And now 30% being very ill of 60% in the UK ....numbers huge. We need to be isolated.
The numbers thing vs ICU beds is the starkest reminder. Most people won't get treated. There aren't enough beds, let alone oxygen supported beds even where these numbers are spread over a 12 month period. (I personally wonder what will be the NHS tipping point for not treating things they would normally treat and discharge existing patients who would be safer at home. Broken leg, appendicitis, cancer = will they still be able to treat them? Would you even want to go near a hopsital now - look at Milan, South Korea,, goodness knows how many hospitals will prove to be infection hubs.)
It's so bleak. There was no hope in his message and the poor chap's clearly got a cold too.
The one bonus of prepping is that perhaps we might enjoy a few "home comforts" before the end.

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 23:53

That's one of my fears @YoursTunbridgeWells
My son visits the hospital a lot for his condition and would it be safe for him to go? Would they even have the facilities to treat him?
The knock on effect is going to be huge.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/02/2020 00:07

We have appointments in a month's time in Birmingham. Not keen on going tbh.

littlebillie · 23/02/2020 00:09

Can I ask why store water?
