Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Has any news been released about new positive tests in Brighton or UK? I have to say I've not been watching specifics closely in recent days.

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 18:49

My kids are back Monday, depending on whether the situation changes. I'm going in to speak to the head though. The new school guidelines say to get the kids to wash their hands more etc. I want to know what procedures they are putting in place and if they aren't going to tell me if anyone is being tested, then I will remove my kids.

wheresmymojo · 22/02/2020 18:50

No more positives in the UK

This is an interesting TED talk about what we can learn from the 1918 flu - obvs this isn't flu but could be a similar replication and mortality rate at the higher end of estimates.

I would say though not to watch this if you're particularly anxious

We are all being issued with antibac wipes and hand gel and I plan to use both religiously

Neither my school nor my DCs' have even acknowledged CV.

Orangecake123 · 22/02/2020 19:01

I personally wouldn't visit.

I live in a studio flat with 9 floors. All full of students.

@Hasa You only need one selfish idiot to spread it.

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 19:03

New advice was issued a few days before half term Gorky. They may implement things next week.

Meme05 · 22/02/2020 19:06

We need antiviral gel - antibacterial gels and wipes don’t work on viruses. Or anything 60 or 70% alcohol content will work.

Dettols blue wipes supposedly kill viruses. Boots sell virucidal hand sprays.

Otherwise there are wipes and sprays you can buy online that can kill Covid-19 in under 15 seconds /30 secs (supposedly).

I have virucidal alcohol hand gel for around the house/office use and have ordered some wipes but still waiting for them to come back in stock. Not sure if they will...
And clearly doesn’t protect against airborne particles but good hand hygiene is better than none.

Iraq has its first case Sad

Italy has reported at least 7 more cases including a case in Milan

My first online shop arrived...I hadn't really been prepping before this apart from buying masks while they still existed and sanitary towels.

I still would like another big shop's worth and to buy a chest freezer to store some frozen veg and meat/fish.

DH on the other hand is laughing at me.

I told him if it turns out to be bad he can't have any of my food for laughing Hmm

Was just going to post that about Iraq. So, so worrying. It's really ramping up.

AmelieTaylor · 22/02/2020 19:14

@ofwarren. Do let us know how your conversation goes tomorrow. I’d definitely want a LOT of reassurance in your situation. I’d want to know they’re taking the whole thing seriously and would 100% inform me if there was a suspected case. School is a scary enough place for you, for DS as it is. I’d have no problem taking DS out of school if I didn’t believe them to be on top
of it AND willing to keep me informed.

@0ttoline

Is there a particular need to visit ‘right now’?

I personally wouldn’t take the risk with someone in her situation right now and I would personally be self quarantining if possible and at least as far as possible

It would hope it goes without saying that I hope you’re both ok 🌷

@EliK

Wasn't sure what to get because I can't see over the counter stuff making much difference

For me, at least, it’s about stocking up on things that will relieve the symptoms & make it slightly less awful if we get mild/moderate case OR any other bug so that we can avoid shops/chemists when a lot of unwell people will be there. It’s not about what will get rid of it or even what will treat a severe case. Hope that makes sense.

There is a pandemic prep Reddit sub if anyone is interested...

@BlackeyedSusan. Toilet roll. Quite a few people had D&V initially, so I’m well stocked. Also I’m a tad fussy so have plenty if my preferred roll in 🤣

Meme05 · 22/02/2020 19:16

I’ve been thinking about buying a chest freezer @wheresmymojo as we have only a small fridge freezer. Do you think that might be overkill?

(We have enough food for about a month with a boring last week or two but would be mainly vege as not enough space for freezing fish etc).

zen1 · 22/02/2020 19:23

I just heard a BBC news headline that the WHO have expressed increasing concern about the number of new cases with no links to China.

AmelieTaylor · 22/02/2020 19:24

@wheresmymojo. Your DH 🙄. I hope he has some weight he can stand to lose 🤣

Just been watching JC and his take in North Korea etc. It’s Bloody scary, but I really like him & his ‘down to earth’ videos.

I’ve Bookmarked the Reddit Link but I’m
Not sure I want to read it.

AmelieTaylor · 22/02/2020 19:26

@zen1. If you watch John Campbell’s video (today’s) you’ll hear a few worrying things from WHO

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 19:26

Just saw on AIBU that panic buying has started in Italy.

preponderings · 22/02/2020 19:30

In Italy, the number of those infected was 29 on Saturday: 27 in Lombardy and two cases in Veneto, including the dead 78-year-old. In ten municipalities in Lombardy, schools and a large part of shops were temporarily closed and residents called to stay at home. Major events such as church services, carnivals and sporting events were banned. Similar measures were also prepared in Veneto to prevent a possible spread of the virus.

preponderings · 22/02/2020 19:31

Italics fail, sorry!

wheresmymojo · 22/02/2020 19:35

One thing I've been wondering about is...

The 1918 flu sort of represents the 'worst case scenario' but if you watch documentaries about it they talk about the illness and deaths. They don't mention other impacts on society - like whether there were shortages, etc.

I suppose they had a lot more local food supply then so it wasn't reliant on supply chains..?

Or perhaps because it was in three seperate waves over 18 months the impact at any one time wasn't enough for any wider societal impact?

Venice university closed for a week. No exams, no lessons

wheresmymojo · 22/02/2020 19:37

I keep swinging wildly between thinking 'what's the point in prepping, I'm going to catch it anyway' through to 'I'm being paranoid' through to 'OMG, all these people have 3 months of prepping and I have a couple of weeks at best' Confused
