Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Venito hope your DC will be back normal soon. DD now discharged from hospital. Just need to make sure she's ok before travelling back home, as we're away. Meant to be going home today and I had planned to add to my stash tomorrow morning, but no chance nowShock

wherearemychickens · 22/02/2020 17:23

Givemeallthegin, thanks, I had to look up some of your list! Not come across those suppositories before, and thankfully my kids are old enough to not need them now!

tryingtoprep · 22/02/2020 17:25

All high alcohol handgels were out of stock when I did my last two (online) shops. I'll try Lidl on Monday.

@wheresmymojo I have my repeat prescription delivered. I use an online pharmacy but some bricks and mortar pharmacies also deliver.

I would've thought a lot of people could work from home during a quarantine? I know it's not possible for everyone, depending on the type of work, but plenty could. It's a worry for people on zero hours. Also worried about those relying on food banks, and homeless people (who are already at an increased risk of pneumonia). I'd hope the government offers some kind of help, a grant or crisis type loan for people who need it.

It is very sad to feel we are crossing a threshold to a different stage with COVID19.

Like a lot of people on this thread I’ve got some untypical family challenges to take into account.

Possibly time for one or two family conversations.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2020 17:27

@BambooBoobam

If you already have a neb, a saline soly can make you feel more comfortable but if you don't already have one you'd do just as well to sit in a steamy bath.

Disclaimer: Not qualified to give advice, that's just my personal best informed guess

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 22/02/2020 17:33

@wherearemychickens no prob!
I’m in Ireland so maybe they are not in the uk? I think they are though.
My gp actually told me before that adults can use them too. Handy if no other paracetamol or vomiting! ( haven’t had to use them on myself - yet !)

BambooBoobam · 22/02/2020 17:33

FourTeaFallOut Thanks. I have a little handheld one that I could use. It makes me feel better knowing I’ve got it at home even if it won’t do much good!

Also a flat dweller. Communal hallway. Door handles to touch to get out, 8 flats per stairwell. Mix of residents, pensioners, families, single people, young students/workers. One I suspect is a teacher. (Ie Lots of contacts)

No growing space.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 17:52

It is an older flat so storage is better than newer flats.

nellodee · 22/02/2020 18:00

I'm a teacher here. Pretty disgusted that current advice is still based on this being droplet transmission rather than airborne, and that it tells us that asymptomatic people cannot spread the disease. I'm worried that I am going to want to not be at school long before my school decides to pull the plug. We have over 1500 kids all going up and down the stairs putting their unwashed little germ factories all over the doors and bannisters. I can't think of any where better to spread this.

FelicityFebruary · 22/02/2020 18:12

My local Aldi had small bottles of alcohol based hand sanitizer.

Also a branch of Lloyds pharmacy had an own brand but no obvious alcohol strength to be seen on the label.

AmelieTaylor · 22/02/2020 18:23

@nellodee. 🌷yet another thing that makes being a teacher seem incredibly undesirable right now. I’m sure many parents will be behind you if you try to push the school into closing sooner rather than later.

airborne. I keep reading both that it US and that it ISN’T. I’m not currently sure which is correct.

Tdaadfb100 · 22/02/2020 18:29

Toilet roll! Toilet roll! Don’t forget the toilet roll! 🤣

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 18:31

They won't close schools until it is too late, in England at least. Scotland may fare better. Education seems more sensible there.

Choux · 22/02/2020 18:33

I have seen this in two central London Superdrug's this week. The website let's you check stocks in store. It doesn't say the alcohol strength though. It is labelled as highly flammable rather than just flammable though and also hospital grade. I bought one and also a small blue carex hand gel listed as 70%
www.superdrug.com/Skin/Hand-Care/Hand-Gel/Defendol-Hospital-Grade-Anti-Bacterial-Hand-Gel/p/793680?singleResultSearchPage=true

EliK · 22/02/2020 18:33

@BlackeyedSusan I'm quite high up and use a lift so not great. That's what got me thinking. I'm in the habit of using hand gel after pressing the button. Neighbours on my floor are mostly elderly and a nurse.
@nellodee I won't be sending DS to school if it breaks out here. I can't understand why they want to keep them open. I'm a student and I'll stop going to classes if the time comes.

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/02/2020 18:34

People are not taking this seriously. DH has someone in his office just returned from china with flu symptoms. They have been asked to stay at home and kicked off saying "you can't make me". PHE got involved and said "oh yes we can"..

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 18:34

I have loo roll. Only a couple of weeks worth. We use a lot. More if we are in all the time.

0ttoline · 22/02/2020 18:35

Can I ask WWYD? DS and I saw a GP at a surgery in Brighton last week where several GPs are now said to be in self isolation, after their exposure to a confirmed case. (The sometimes unreliable local paper is my only source for this info!)

I have a relative who would be at fairly high risk if she got cv. She would like me and DS to visit her, and I would love to go, but I am concerned. I'm thinking it's possible that there are unconfirmed cases here, as there were in Italy, and that I (or DS) could be among them. But I'm having difficulty weighing up the real risk.

I really want to see my relative, but am also extremely keen for her to avoid cv! Would you visit?

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 18:36

Bloody hell HasaDiga. Just bloody hell.

Skyejuly · 22/02/2020 18:41

I would say that delay the visit and visit her soon.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 18:41

I wouldn't visit, no. Leave it two weeks after you visited the GP.

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 18:41

@ottoline I personally would wait until 2 weeks had passed just in case. It's so hard to know what to do though ☹️

TheWooisStrong · 22/02/2020 18:42

I’m a teacher and not looking forward to going back to school tomorrow.
Planning on not eating there (little change!) and only drinking out of my own water bottle. Avoiding the staff room.
We are all being issued with antibac wipes and hand gel and I plan to use both religiously.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 18:45

Is everyone back to school after half term?
