Prepping for a pandemic....5

5th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Just catching up on the thread. Goodness, things have moved fast in the past day or so! It's slightly concerning.

I feel so sorry for the Abels. I don't know why the government evacuated Brits from Wuhan but not the DP?

I've got 5 disposable masks. I'm trying to decide whether to get one of the reusable ones but like AvocadoOwl my DP works in London, travelling on public transport. He's still in denial. It's not worth spending the money unless we both get one. I'm focusing on stocking up on food and medicine at this point. We're both slightly at risk. He's a current smoker, I'm an ex-smoker, and we both have underlying conditions.

@AlohaMolly I think it's always useful to have some cash. I wouldn't withdraw large amounts from the bank or whatever savings you have. Just enough for emergencies.

wherearemychickens · 22/02/2020 16:27

I have been thrown by John Campbell's video on fever posted earlier in the thread - which is excellent - but rather puts the kibosh on the paracetamol & ibuprofen stocking up I'd done. What actual meds have people stocked up on? I have ibuprofen, paracetamol & lemsip, but am now wary of using those if we're not supposed to actual bring fevers down unless they get too too high. Also have some cough medicines, vicks rub, strepsils, diaroralyte, vit D & Vit C. What else could I be stocking up on meds wise?

Orangecake123 · 22/02/2020 16:28

Veneto-Glad you got the prescription for the medication. Wishing your family a speedy recovery.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/02/2020 16:36

@wherearemychickens check out the non food preps thread on the Brexit board for general list of first aid kits meds.

There was a good thread on first aid supplies as well though I can't remember which board it was on. Maybe this one.

"Italy's Council of Ministers will meet on coronavirus at 6:30 p.m. local time. Prime Minister Conte says the government is considering "extraordinary measures"

OP posts:
ofwarren · 22/02/2020 16:49

This will be interesting @wheresmymojo because it might give us an idea on what will possibly happen here when we get more cases.

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 16:50

What time will that be in UK time?

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2020 16:52

Prime Minister Conte says the government is considering "extraordinary measures"

Is it just me or does this sentence alone make to want to ram raid the biscuit aisle in Tesco?

zen1 · 22/02/2020 16:55

In ASDA today, they had a new stock of dettol hand sanitizer - plenty on the shelves (and I seemed to be the only person after it!).

wheresmymojo · 22/02/2020 16:56

Meds wise we haven't gone crazy.

We try not to use OTC meds much - mainly because they help with symptoms but sometimes prolong the actual illness by interfering with the body's immune response.

So we have one or two packs of painkillers, one lot of Lemsip. That's pretty much it.

I've got one lot of strepsils and will get more as I know a sore throat is one of the symptoms of milder cases and I don't believe they interfere with your own immune response.

I might think about getting cough syrup for dry coughs or maybe Night Nurse just in case we have those nights where you cough so much you can't sleep which is usually what happens with those dry coughs they say to expect.

Otherwise we have stocked up a bit on OTC meds that I use (DH is annoyingly healthy) such as Gaviscon and stuff for UTIs just because I sometimes need them and I'm not going to really want to go to the pharmacy if avoidable (I'll have to go once a month for my prescription meds but would limit to that and in a mask if there's evidence of spread here).

When do we think people will start wearing masks en masse in public in the U.K.?

Also, I am extremely worried about finances if workplaces are closed/people have to quarantine. On a personal level as we have a big family to feed and due to recent circumstances we don't have enough savings to cover loss of wages, but also on a general level as this would affect so many people on zero hour contracts/just making ends meet/low wages. If people are going to lose two weeks pay with no/little warning and still have expenses to meet, how will everyone pay their rent and bills?

wheresmymojo · 22/02/2020 17:01

@ofwarren 5.30pm UK time

@wherearemychickens. I too am well stocked up on Panasonic, ibruprophen, beechams and the like. I TRY not to take them when I have a cold etc because I do agree it delays actual recovery (though I didn’t know why exactly until I watched his video) but there are days when you just need to ‘get on’ and it helps to feel half decent. If I got Covid 19 I would try not to take them unless I was in sole charge if children (at which point I’d risk prolonging my case to keep them well looked after) OR at the point where I feel my fever has been too high for too long (I need to read up more about that so I can decide now how long I’m happy to let that go on for). Quite often I am home alone and I need to be safe - especially if friends or emergency services can’t come quickly if it all goes wrong. I have NO regrets having a good supply of them.

Like you I have some other bits in to help with the ‘symptoms’ and any D&V high5 (rehydration tablets to put in water) nicer than diorylyte - but I have a few of those too, nasal sprays, Vicks, lozenges, & lots of tissues & toilet rolls. Multi vitamins, vit D, magnesium, B12 - which I’m trying to remember to take daily now.

I can’t think of anything else either ‍🤷🏻‍♀️

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2020 17:05

I don't think people would start wearing masks en masses in this country unless it were enforced.

I do think that personal finances would play a big part in how compliant people would be if there is a mass quarantine. I hope the powers that be have considered this and put a plan in place that will actually help.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2020 17:07

I don't think I would take cough medicine. I think it's best to hock up as much phlegm as you can, it won't be a dry cough if you have started to get a chest infection.

BambooBoobam · 22/02/2020 17:10

Do you think a saline nebuliser would help if you had a milder case?

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 17:11

I'm with you FourTeaFallOut I'm anxious as to what these extraordinary measures are. I suppose it gives us an idea of what to expect in the future.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2020 17:12

Do you already have a nebuliser?

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2020 17:13

It might just mean no church in the morning and no more air kissing Grin

ofwarren · 22/02/2020 17:15

😁 that would definitely be extraordinary to the Italians 😁

AmelieTaylor · 22/02/2020 17:15

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles.

Yes, that’s definitely a worry, as is the potential soaring of crime, China paid everyone (or at least that’s what we’ve been told), I can’t see our Govt doing that. Even if they wanted to, I don’t think there’s a cat in hells chance they could sort their shit out to actually do it without several years of paperwork first. It’s worrying.

I think (as discussed previously) banks wouldn’t be allowed to reclaim houses where the mortgage wasn’t paid, or that any drastic action be taken by gas/electricity/water companies etc or car finance companies etc, but they need to pay bills/staff too.

I guess eventually the GOVT would step in & lay down some rules...my worry is how long that would take!

My first worry is for people relying on food banks and voluntary services such as women’s aid etc.

I’m doing most of my prep via internet shopping but I’m also shopping locally for ‘current’ stuff to support the local shops and local food banks (so hopefully they can get a good store in).

I’ve upped my donations to local animal charities too as I’m sure they’ll end up with more animals, less volunteers & fewer donations.

I’ll keep all of those going while I’m able to.

@Fourtea

My sister and I saw a woman buying 10 packets of the same biscuits at our local Sainsbury's.

When I stayed with my parent's I also stocked up on ginger nuts and chocolate crepes for them from Aldi.

AmelieTaylor · 22/02/2020 17:20

@VenetoResident

I’m impressed with your paediatrician. There’s no waybtgatbwould happen here! I hope you’re ALL feeling much better soon 🌷

EliK · 22/02/2020 17:21

Been to Morrison's. Was pretty quiet but I did notice one woman stocking up on bottled water and jars of sauce. I've got about a week, maybe 10 days, of food so far. Hoping to add another week's worth in the next few days.
For medication I have paracetamol, calpol and Strepsils. Wasn't sure what to get because I can't see over the counter stuff making much difference.
Does anyone else live in a flat? Makes me slightly worried if it were to spread here.
