Prepping for a pandemic...4

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

@KundaliniRising thank you for sharing your info, everyone welcome to share anything that may help as far as I'm concerned and I won't be poo pooing anyone who is only trying to help others.

ofwarren · 16/02/2020 13:50

I think you're right Gorky I misread it

bellinisurge · 16/02/2020 13:50

@Fantasiaa and @KundaliniRising* , fellow MS sufferer here. Boosting your vitamin intake and having preferred cold symptom remedies is a particularly good idea for people in our situation. Which other people who don't normally bother with it might find useful. Keep well @KundaliniRising** . Obviously listen to advice from health care professionals and MS society.
It may surprise you to know @Fantasiaa* but everyone with MS is usually left to their own devices rather a lot. It can be very isolating.
Don't know about you @KundaliniRising , but I spend most winters with an eye on the possibility of getting some wretched bug or other. Norovirus two years on the trot (pardon pun) was dreadful and it took ages to recover.

ofwarren · 16/02/2020 13:52

I too am happy reading Kundalini posts about herbal remedies. She says that she has over the counter medicine too so it's not like she is shunning modern medicine.

LittleSwede · 16/02/2020 13:59

You don't have to be a 'hippy' to see that there are benefits in alternative medicine and herbal remedies Fantasiaa Ever heard of Michael Moseley? A lot of his gut health theories stem from ancient Ayurvedic theories about how good gut health leads to general good health. A lot of the remedies listed by Kuandalinirising would would probably feed the microbiome and thus support immune system and good health.

GorkyMcPorky · 16/02/2020 14:02

@ofwarren I think Reuters might initially have misreported and then changed it. There are bound to be more now though as that ship wasn't in lockdown was it?

Fantasiaa · 16/02/2020 14:16

Oh God.

I should have known a thread full of some people irrationally preparing for a supposed pandemic when the mortality rate is 1 %, when more people die from the flu, when there’s been 9 cases in the U.K., when most people who die are old or immuno compromised would also be a thread to support alternative medicine.

I’m going to bow out now.

I hope you all enjoy frantically preparing and over analysing about a virus. Enjoy.

bellinisurge · 16/02/2020 14:18

Please find a way to calm yourself @Fantasiaa and don't fall into the trap of thinking that everyone who is talking about this is a crazed loon - only you know the answer etc etc.

LorenzoStDubois · 16/02/2020 14:24

I live in Hong Kong.
Yep - there was a run on loo roll, sanpro, hand sanitizers, tissues, Dettol, bleach, wipes and …. rice and noodles.

I have relatives arriving here to HK for their holidays in 2 weeks.
No way will they cancel.
Other relatives have already told them to stay well away from them, for at least two weeks after they go back home.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/02/2020 14:31

It's a shame that Fantasiaa only saw what they wanted to see in the thread.

I guess Fantasiaa thinks my life is disposable for being on immunosuppressants?

FourTeaFallOut · 16/02/2020 14:42

Oh yeah, my post was offensive, not that shite I quoted, fuck you MNHQ.

ofwarren · 16/02/2020 14:43

Oh that's ok then, only the old and immunocompromised people are going to die. So that's my 5 year old, my Brother, my mum and dad and my father in law. Also possibly me as I have lots of different autoimmune disorders and lung damage from pneumonia last year..

floatygoat · 16/02/2020 14:44

@Fantasiaa wow what a sour person. (Thought it was well established now that good gut health is essential part of immunity anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️)

The point is, not all of us will see alternative medicine as an option we'd like to try, but that doesn't mean we can tell someone everything they've just written to try and help others, is a waste of time and complete load of shite. It's just rude and unkind.

Plus, you've just dismissed people over 60 and immunocompromised people dying as not worth worrying over.

That makes you a really nasty cow. Off you trot.

FourTeaFallOut · 16/02/2020 14:45

Jesus, that's some first class hateful disablist bullshit.

FourTeaFallOut · 16/02/2020 14:48

Just so long as we get fucking pronouns right MNHQ? But this actual hate speech, writing off the disabled like bad debt, is cool bananas?????

ofwarren · 16/02/2020 14:49

What is wrong with someone using herbal remedies alongside modern medicine? I reach for a ginger tea when I feel sick, or have honey and lemon for a sore throat. It is exactly the same principle. If Kundalini feels that this helps her to feel in control of the situation and like she is being proactive, then more power to her. I'm 100% pro vaxx and pro modern medicine but most medicine was herbal till we started manufacturing it.
I personally go straight for pharmacy drugs and prescriptions for most things but there is nothing wrong with supplementing that with "remedies" if you want to. She is doing no harm.

Incenseday · 16/02/2020 14:52

@Fantasiaa you do you. There's a wide variety of opinions and backgrounds on the thread. Personally, I think alternative medicine is mostly a load of rubbish, but in the absence of any treatment (yet) from conventional medicine, people can fill their boots IMO.

GorkyMcPorky · 16/02/2020 15:14

Who knew that you can buy tinned burgers?! I haven't, but I could!

eeeyoresmiles · 16/02/2020 15:19

But should you? Shouldn't some kind of planet-wide evacuation plan at least be tried before we resort to steps like that??

GothMummy · 16/02/2020 15:26

My family laughed at me over the last 2 weeks for prepping. Not laughing now are they, as we have flooding on roads and a power cut, the electric went some time in the night. Now they are glad I had UHT milk, part baked rolls, batteries, torches, power banks and a windup radio. Ha!

BlackeyedSusan · 16/02/2020 15:34

Lots of the "hippy" stuff is recommended as part of a healthy diet. Definitely seen garlic, ginger, turmeric recommended. Also seeds and nuts, lots of trace elements. Rose hip syrup was given out/ recommended in WW2. and unfortunately the seventies too iirc. And elderberries. ( Yuk, sorry)

Eating 10 veg portions a day has also been recommended as the ideal.

None of that is way out there .

I do prefer my garlic, ginger and turmeric to be administered as part of a veggie rich curry though. Yum.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/02/2020 15:36

Sorry Goth that they have had to learn the hard way.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/02/2020 15:40

I really don't get the school advice. With luck we may know more from Japan and Singapore before it really takes off here and advice can be updated, honed etc.

Right now it seems that they don't give a shit for those most at risk, given different countries responses.
