Prepping for a pandemic...3

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a NCoV pandemic.

General NCoV Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. This means it's a fairly contagious virus, probably around the level of swine flu or more.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment. This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of NCoV

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).*

Updates*

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

GothMummy, now that's one thing I'm worried about, my cats. There's people who could feed them, even stay, but would they be willing to do so with our germs on every surface.

BustedDreams · 10/02/2020 21:34

Following with interest.

TipseyTorvey · 10/02/2020 21:35

Thanks for the new thread. I find it a nice calm place to keep updated and sensibly prepped. Food wise we're good now for a month. Medicine needs a trawl through 6 or 7 local shops tomorrow to get us up to a good level. Thanks for the reminder of pet food. Added that to online shop now.

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 21:36

Obviously I want them to develop a vaccine but does anyone remember what happened when they rushed one through for swine flu? There were lots of cases of the vaccine causing narcolepsy
www.narcolepsy.org.uk/resources/pandemrix-narcolepsy
It's a risk when vaccines have to be rushed.
It concerns me because my son is in an at risk group and will end up being one of the first to be given the new vaccine.

That's really helpful neome Thank you!

quirrels · 10/02/2020 21:46

I don't get out much so haven't spoken to anyone irl about this. Am very worried about DC1 who travelling abroad next week and doesn't seem remotely concerned.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2020 21:49

More about the Hong Kong transmission possibly through shared waste pipes.

That is so reminiscent of SARS.

Hollyhobbi · 10/02/2020 21:55

Don't know if this was in the other threads but Indeed, which is a Recruitment Company, has asked all its employees in Dublin and Sydney to work from home until Feb. 17th.This is from RTEs website. There are 1000 employees of this company in Dublin. There are fears that one of its employees might have been exposed to the new Corona Virus in Singapore after their family members visited a health care facility caring for someone with the virus. Some employees who have been in the Singapore office recently and have also been in the Dublin and Sydney offices of this company. I also received an email on the 4th of February from dd2s school about precautions to take and so on. Just shows how global we are now and how it only takes one person for a virus to potentially travel the globeSad

StargazyDrifter · 10/02/2020 21:56

Thank you for the new thread mojo

Neome thank you so much for demystifying the Imperial paper! That’s really helpful and interesting to see. It had completely defeated me.

wheresmymojo · 10/02/2020 21:58

I liked something I read the other day which I feel would be good to keep in mind as a way to be re: Coronavirus:

Prepared, not panicking. Alert, not anxious.

A real pleasure and very reassuring for me to have the chance to read it. Hooray for MN Smile

We have confirmation of care home on lockdown.
Fingers very much crossed that nothing is passed on here or it could be the first deaths given the age and likely health profile of people there...

Good thread.

YankeeDad · 10/02/2020 22:08

@wheresmymojo, this is really useful. Is it your own synthesis of information from multiple sources, or from a single source? If single source, could you link it here?

wheresmymojo · 10/02/2020 22:12

Good transcription of a podcast with Dr Peter Openshaw - specialist on lung infections at Imperial College.

Key takeaways are noted as:

  • *The 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV), as of writing, is thought to have a 2% fatality rate ▪ Given the fact that not everyone who’s infected seeks treatment at a hospital, this number could be much lower
  • *Compared to SARS, the coronavirus seems to be less fatal (SARS had a 10% fatality rate) but more infectious ▪ On the Chinese containment efforts:
  • *“I think it’s too early to give up on containment. It’s important that we continue to try to contain the coronavirus as best we can. The best outcome we have is that we manage to contain it. But we have to plan for the reality that it might not be containable because it just seems to spread so well.”Dr. Peter Openshaw ▪ If you think you have the coronavirus:
  • *DON’T go to a hospital and sit in a crowded waiting room, infecting tons of other people
  • *DO call your local medical hotline, explain your situation, and quarantine yourself ▪ On the coronavirus epidemic: “There’s no point in getting panicked over this, but I do think we need to be concerned.”Dr. Peter Openshaw

www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2020-02-01/coronavirus-lurking-in-feces-may-reveal-hidden-risk-of-spread?__twitter_impression=true In Bloomberg:
While doctors have focused on respiratory samples from pneumonia cases to identify coronavirus patients, they might have ignored a less apparent and hidden source of the spread: diarrhea.

YankeeDad

It's from various sources (links are given in the previous two threads). Sorry I'm too lazy to dig back through and find all the links again Blush

YankeeDad & other thread newbies

I would really recommend the videos of Dr John Campbell on YouTube as a good source of factual, evidence based information explained for lay people.
