Prepping for a pandemic...3

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a NCoV pandemic.

General NCoV Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. This means it's a fairly contagious virus, probably around the level of swine flu or more.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment. This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of NCoV

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).*

Updates*

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

The good thing about prednisolone is that it has a long shelf life - years rather than months. So hopefully there is plenty of it stockpiled somewhere ... Or they are furiously manufacturing it during this 'window of opportunity'.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 14/02/2020 11:43

True - shame you can't buy it in this country.

Churchgoers urged to avoid communion wine and shaking hands if they have 'coughs and sneezes' in coronavirus warning as China death toll rises to 1,380

The Church of England reinforced its advice for parishioners to be hygienic

It said people with 'coughs and sneezes' should avoid touching other people

They shouldn't drink from the 'Common Cup' or shake hands during communion

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 14/02/2020 11:45

Just to point out that uber lady and the infected person who was at the bus conference are not the same person. Think there was some confusion upthread.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/02/2020 11:45

Can you buy it over the counter is some countries? I had no idea.

TreesSandSea · 14/02/2020 11:46

That is interesting about the immune suppressant meds, Tonbridge. I’m on a daily med like that and I have stopped taking them as I have a horrible head cold. Not planning on restarting for a while - rather have joint pain and a functioning immune system ....

FourTeaFallOut · 14/02/2020 11:47

There was a parents evening at ds1s school earlier in the week and there was a distinct lack of hand shaking. Most people seem to have sensibly withdrawn from the habit without having to be told.

LIVING IN FEAR

Mum of Britain’s youngest suspected coronavirus victim says she’s terrified she’ll lose her eight month old son

THE mum of Britain’s youngest suspected coronavirus victim told The Sun last night: “I’m terrified for my little baby.”

Stephanie Adlam’s tot James was treated for a leg injury by a doctor who has the killer virus

ofwarren · 14/02/2020 11:50

I don't like hand shaking or hugging people who aren't my immediate family. I'd be glad if those social norms disappeared altogether quite frankly Grin

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 14/02/2020 11:51

I'm not even that keen on shaking hands and hugging with my immediate family, tbh Grin

ofwarren · 14/02/2020 11:54

webuiltciscity I was sure I chose the grin emoji not the gin emoji.
I'm going to try again
Grin: Grin
Gin: Gin

ofwarren · 14/02/2020 11:55

Wtf? Anyone else noticed that the grin emoji is now gin?

Legoandloldolls · 14/02/2020 11:55

I think they know they cant contain it anymore hence the "off you go and self isolate if you get symptoms" maybe it's not to cause mass panic, maybe it's to show they are doing something rather than nothing?

In which case i feel really bad for those on the cruise ship. More because if they had found it on board today I bet they would be allowed off to self monitor.

SugarStealer · 14/02/2020 12:00

I am stocking up on essentials, I have a load of bottles of wine, gotta have the important things in life!

KundaliniRising · 14/02/2020 12:14

We have an air filter similar to this

We originally bought it for our dd as she suffers from bad hayfever. Now we use it to help stop bugs from spreading if one of us are unwell.

I am perplexed as to the lackadaisical approach that our govenment is taking at the moment, silence from BoJo our PM Hmm

Legoandloldolls · 14/02/2020 12:15

sugarstealer good reminder! If I had to self isolate in my three bed semi with four kids it wont be long until I have self medicate with wine.

I already stocked up on migraine medication for half term.

Legoandloldolls · 14/02/2020 12:19

I'm thinking of getting two more power banks for the phone. Just charging up one of existing two and it's not charging. When someone been unexpectedly admitted before a power bank is essential. My dh had a really bad accident at work once and was transferred to a London trauma major ressus unit ( we arent in london) no chance of plugging in anything in such a critical care bay

LittleSwede · 14/02/2020 12:22

A good example of a bit of prepping being very handy is the case of the nurse who had to start her self isolation in Brighton (sorry I haven't got a link) the other day. She described coming home to an empty house (her children were having to stay elsewhere) with no food in the fridge/cupboards. She had to phone fir fish and chips and ask the delivery person to leave it in the doorstep. She then made a Tesco order and again asked them to leave it outside the door. Without being goady I now have enough stuff in the house to be able to self isolate at very short notice. Mostly thanks yo this thread and previous Brexit ones. The thought of DD having to go elsewhere is terrifying thought, she'd 5 with ASD and would find it very upsetting to be removed from home and her mum.

Legoandloldolls · 14/02/2020 12:45

My son has ASD. We have no support network, no family who would be able to help. The only people who I could ask is socail services to take my kids ( have a disability socail worker ) so unless someone in my house dies my kids are going no where. We cant isolate separately. Plus all my kids are in different schools so that's the reality of some peoples lives. The kids grandparents have never been invested and are focussed on living life to the full which isn't compatible with being a regular feature in the kids lives. I dont think they could even cope after such a lifestyle.

HasaDigaEebowai · 14/02/2020 13:01

Ive just bought an air filter/purifier. I'd been looking at one anyway since the house is wood fuelled and so there is sometimes smoke around but this made my mind up.

floatygoat · 14/02/2020 13:05

@wheresmymojo a couple of really excellent posts there which I have screen shotted and sent to my cynical mother!

floatygoat · 14/02/2020 13:07

A lot of this going on.

floatygoat · 14/02/2020 13:08

Link there for bleach mixing as a disinfectant. I have bought several cheap bottles of bleach!

ofwarren · 14/02/2020 13:19

Fascinating floatygoat that's exactly what it is!
