Prepping for a pandemic...3

Third thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a NCoV pandemic.

General NCoV Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4.8 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4.8 people. This means it's a fairly contagious virus, probably around the level of swine flu or more.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment. This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of NCoV

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).*

Updates*

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

I didn't mention the antibac wipes blush but stopped using them.

Presumably because they're basically just cheap alcohol?

I had a similar Dettol mishap in the past, when we had a bout of norovirus.
I used the Dettol spray around the door and handle of the bathroom and it turned the paintwork nicotine yellow. I had to gloss it to get rid of it.

Dyrne · 14/02/2020 08:23

Good to know about anti bac wipes vs paint. We often use them on surfaces, doorknobs, light switches etc especially after illness but rarely on painted surfaces .

Your noble sacrifice has saved my paintwork Grin

Dyrne · 14/02/2020 08:27

And yes, I’d say for the last month there has been absolutely zero excuse to “accidentally” risk infecting others - the Virus is well known enough now that surely if you’ve been to an infected region and start displaying symptoms, your literal first thought should be assuming Coronavirus until proven otherwise? I don’t mean panicking, I just mean not sodding spreading it around hundreds of people

Dyrne · 14/02/2020 08:30

On a bit of a side note, where are all these companies that allow their staff to attend international conferences? I had to beg and plead to be allowed to attend one in London, ffs, and that’s a 30 min train ride away...

HasaDigaEebowai · 14/02/2020 08:30

The problem is the massive amount of misinformation. So many people laughing and mocking and saying "its just flu"

SharpieInThe · 14/02/2020 08:35

You have your preppers talking and then someone will post "oMG wHy ARe yOU prePPinG iT'S jUsT FLu!"

These are the people who will be our super-spreaders. They'll get the bus after displaying symptoms. Wander around touching their face.

Right now we're just living life, no known cases near us, plenty of dettol (the laundry stuff looks great especially the 2 1/2 litres water with a cap full or two of the detergent to soak stuff) plenty of food and good hand hygiene all round. Obviously I'm hysterical and panicking.

I try to always think the best of people but this Uber story..... It's very selfish :(

ChipotleBlessing · 14/02/2020 08:47

I had thought maybe there was a language barrier that meant she didn’t understand the instructions re calling 111 but if she was attending a conference her English must be good. The only thing I can think of is that she didn’t think she’d had any contact with someone who was infected, so thought it was over cautious advice.

Gammeldragz · 14/02/2020 08:58

Got to work to find my clinic room now has masks (only surgical ones) and goggles. Wonder when we'll get some proper masks...

I suppose it's possible that she didn't understand the gravity of her symptoms until she arrived in the UK. I understand information is not getting through to ordinary people throughout China, and that they don't have the same sort of access to the internet as we do.

People on the Diamond Princess are losing their shit...

This guy, David Abel, started off pretty chilled and positive but is now talking of conspiracy theories and appealing to Richard Branson.

I started off thinking 'God, what babies, this is nothing compared to what some people have to go through' but actually I can imagine when you're in that situation everything will blow out of proportion because you're trapped in a room, not much else to think about, etc.

It's possible she thought that going via Uber would expose fewer people to the virus.

wheresmymojo · 14/02/2020 09:15

I'm still a bit Hmmat them complaining about the fact that they won't have European food. I mean I realise that wouldn't be ideal but they could at least be a tiny bit grateful that they are being looked after.

Imagine the uproar if we were looking after a load of forrins and they complained because the NHS wasn't making them Japanese food for every meal while in quarantine.

Any ideas what would be ok to use on paintwork? Also, are antibac wipes ok on chrome, thinking of door handles?

I read yesterday that the Chinese lady phoned 111 and was told to make her own way in. Either way, either the NHS, PHE or the lady should feel ashamed they've knowingly exposed the Uber driver and two nurses to a known potential risk.

Skyejuly · 14/02/2020 09:28

I think things are a bit intense for them now. If I was in a cabin especially one with no window I would be going insane.

SugarStealer · 14/02/2020 09:30

I am not bothered about my paintwork, my whole house is badly in need of decorating so I will carry on with my Dettol wipes. I wipe everywhere when anyone comes in from work Grin

GothMummy · 14/02/2020 09:32

I'm halfway through stripping the paintwork in the hallway anyway, so will carry on with the Dettoll!

MoonlightMistletoe · 14/02/2020 09:32

Are there any updates on the 8month old baby suspected to have the virus?

ofwarren · 14/02/2020 09:32

I find anti bac is fine on Chrome. Hot soapy water I assume will be ok on paintwork. It's the alcohol that kills the virus when you use anti bac and I bet it's that which makes the paint bubble

Does anyone use a steam cleaner at home? I have a steam mop for the floors, which has attachments. I wonder which surfaces will be safe to steam? I can't imagine it will work on paintwork.
