Prepping for pandemic...

I was quite blasé about the novel corona virus outbreak but things I've read today have changed my mind.

I'm not usually a prepper but best things to stock up on for a pandemic?

Surgical face masks?
Latex gloves?
Anti bac wipes and hand wash?

I just read about the woman in the Evacuee Coach

I’m glad she ‘self isolated’ but probably not much value in it given they were on a coach and had been in a flight together.

As for the others I’m also surprised they’re not keeping them isolated within the isolation unit. Seems madness to me to have them mixing with each other. If one of them is found to have it, surely they’ll have to restart the isolation counter for the others again as there’s be no telling when they’d got it.

I said this when they brought them. Unless they're in solitary, if one is found to be infected everyone else needs to start again. Theoretically they could be there for weeks on end.

One thing that both puzzles me and reassures me is that there are only 15 cases in Hong Kong. How?

mamapants · 03/02/2020 13:13

Thanks @BlackeyedSusan and @swishthecat definitely must have been still half a sleep and misread the report on the French quarantine testing.

MissPoldark · 03/02/2020 13:17

And the I believe the cases in Hong Kong include a family who have been ill since the beginning of January. (Ref. a study published in the Lancet on a family cluster of pneumonia)
Hopefully they have recovered by now but couldn't find any further info.

I'm concerned about the case in the US showing the first concrete human to human transmission of the virus.

Germany has the most cases from H2H transmission outside of China. They're on the third generation now - from memory a colleague from China went to Germany for work meetings and then flew back to China. Didn't have any symptoms until the day she got back to China.

Three work colleagues were infected from meetings/working with her.

One of those infected their spouse and child.

I can't remember how they get to the third generation as that's two...

Presumably on the isolation in quarantine issue, they’re balancing the likelihood that people are incubating the virus with the danger that people will leave if they get too fed up/lonely/feel imprisoned.

Dyrne · 03/02/2020 14:04

I think in Germany it was that only one of the work colleagues had contact with the Chinese colleague, and he spread it to two other colleagues, who then spread it to their child?

wheresmymojo · 03/02/2020 14:14

I think we already knew that the risk of catching from parcels was low - confirmed in pic below.

On the other hand in certain circumstances it looks as though the virus may be able to live on some surfaces for up to 5 days.

I don't think this is conflicting as I suspect parcels going through international delivery are not the right circumstances but to be considered re: bleaching and/or avoiding door handles, toilet flushers, handrails, etc if it does ever spread here.

Will see later if I can track down the actual article saying what the circumstances are.

Third case has been confirmed in Kerala, India. All students from Wuhan though so no H2H transmission yet. They appear to have a good handle on things in Kerala.

I'm surprised no cases in other Indian cities yet.

@Dyrne Ah, yes I think you're right!

@OhYouBadBadKitten

I assume HK is in the same situation as the other cities that aren’t testing very much and are either not reporting deaths - or are not attributing them to CV.

wheresmymojo · 03/02/2020 14:23

Latest commentary suggests that cases in HK could increase significantly as people return from the mainland.

Most people who went to the mainland for Chinese NY will have come back over the weekend. Then they will be back at work today.

Similar expected in mainland cities that aren't in lockdown as people return to places of work from today.

That being said it may take 5-14 days for this effect to be shown given the incubation period.

@AmelieTaylor I think HK have a much closer control over things than mainland China and are much more transparent.

In some ways an outbreak in HK would give a proper view of what the virus is capable of (not that I'm wishing it on anyone, hopefully they stay free of it).

Last night I saw an update on the status of the 15(?) HK cases in terms of how many were critical, ages, etc. Will see if I can dig that back out later.

There are seven employees from the
German Webesto factory who have the coronavirus now.

wheresmymojo · 03/02/2020 14:28

Some cities and provinces have extended the break until next week.

"Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and the manufacturing provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang will also reportedly remain on holiday until at least next week"

The info posted on here showed three colleagues caught it from the Chinese visitor to Germany. It would still be up thread somewhere.

DD I can persuade to wash hands, ds on the other hand...

StargazyDrifter · 03/02/2020 16:01

Attached image might help re: Germany. Can’t remember if I got this from this thread or New York Times.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/02/2020 16:03

That's the one I remember.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 03/02/2020 16:03

@StargazyDrifter I think you inadvertently put up a wrong pic (I've reported already so MNHQ will see it but obvs you may want to contact them!)

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 03/02/2020 16:04

(I live in fear of doing something like that when I post pictures of my cat Grin)

BlackeyedSusan · 03/02/2020 16:05

Two caught from Chinese visitor, not three. Sorry.

StargazyDrifter · 03/02/2020 16:18

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles thank you so much! And thank you MNHQ - very impressive fast action! 😬😬😬

KundaliniRising · 03/02/2020 16:20
