Prepping for pandemic...

I was quite blasé about the novel corona virus outbreak but things I've read today have changed my mind.

I'm not usually a prepper but best things to stock up on for a pandemic?

Surgical face masks?
Latex gloves?
Anti bac wipes and hand wash?

According to the mirror there's another case from the second evacuation flight.

NemophilistRebel · 03/02/2020 10:18

Great news about the French 20 getting the all clear

TheOrangeFox · 03/02/2020 10:18

Do you have a link?

I'm concerned about the case in the US showing the first concrete human to human transmission of the virus.

It's horrible to think this is just the beginning and it's already worse than SARS. I can't imagine how people are feeling in infected areas. It must be hell.

NemophilistRebel · 03/02/2020 10:20

It’s on the guardian live blog

Sorry! I meant a link to The Mirror confirming another case in the U.K.

Did people see the interview on the BBC with the man who is quarantined at the moment? He was full of praise for the way he is being looked after and seemed very comfortable and compliant. But what struck me was that he said that anything they asked for, they got (tvs, radios etc). In a cash-strapped NHS, it's clear that the authorities really, really want the people quarantined to be happy to stay put.

KundaliniRising · 03/02/2020 10:27

Wuhan coronavirus research paper which does make interesting reading, i am on the fence with it though and have not had time to check out the authenticity of it, but thought that it was worth sharing.

MyHairIsSoapy · 03/02/2020 10:32

That’s sad about the first doctor and other 7that tried to raise the new virus outbreak and get help in Wuhan were actually arrested by police for public order offences type stuff and told to stop.

Now it’s in Thailand/Cambodia it will spread like wild fire. Not as much government control to force people to do as they are told as in China and less infrastructure and masks/hygiene background use etc. It’s already normal to wear masks there.
I’m sure if I wore a mask through the services on a British motorway I would end up being laughed at in someone’s Facebook

FourTeaFallOut · 03/02/2020 10:34

Does anyone know if the results are back from the woman at Paddington station yet?

TheOrangeFox · 03/02/2020 10:35

I saw that interview. It makes sense. Those in isolation need to be kept happy and compliant so as not to incite any panic, especially in the press. One bad word to the press from someone in quarantine could incite mass panic and the press and healthcare staff need to exercise their duty of care here because the U.K in a panic is something nobody needs.

TheOrangeFox · 03/02/2020 10:36

Where are you guys worried about the most outside of China? I think many human transmission cases in India would be a catastrophe.

FourTeaFallOut · 03/02/2020 11:06

Because on December 30th only seven people were identified as having an unknown illness that was neither flu nor SARS and five weeks later there are over 17000 official cases but an expected number of 100000 using modelling tools.

Now, call me Machiavellian but as someone with a chronic respiratory illness, who is self employed with three DC to look after and who doesn't live in China or India, I like to keep abreast of the local news.

teta · 03/02/2020 11:10

@Kundalina if true that paper is potentially terrifying. It's basically saying that this virus is unlike all other Corona Virus' because it has 4 inserts of RNA that are very similar to the hiv virus. They don't seem to believe this could have occurred naturally. But let's just see what other labs say post analysis of viral isolates.
I've just spoken to a family member who dealt with some of the very first hiv cases. He's said that when it was first isolated many scientists hypothesised that it was a man-made virus. They were subsequently proven to be wrong.
So he issued a voice of caution not to believe everything published .

MynameisJune · 03/02/2020 11:20

The two ill people in Newcastle were taken to Castle Hill hospital in Hull before transferred to Newcastle. That wasn’t reported in main steam press so I imagine not every move is being reported.

MynameisJune · 03/02/2020 11:22

Been and stocked up a few more tins of soup/beans/flour and yeast for making break and some long life milk. I think we could last 2-4 weeks at a push with rationing if needed. Depending on how things develop I’ll keep adding some little bits of needed.

Just waiting for my order of Milton spray and hand gel to be dispatched and then I’ll be happy.

teta · 03/02/2020 11:30

The paper has been rubbished by several sources apparently. It wasn't peer reviewed . Interesting criticism in Forbes magazine about it.

KundaliniRising · 03/02/2020 11:35

teta do you have the forbs artical to hand? I would be very interested to read it.

KundaliniRising · 03/02/2020 11:39

And thank you to the person up thread whom posted the link for medical hygiene goods, i have ordered a few things from there, the alcohol hand sanitiser etc 👍🏻

Upherefordancing · 03/02/2020 11:48

Going cashless and card only is a really good way to prevent the spread IMO. Money and cash points are touched by thousands each day.

I've been cashless for months but had to get £40 out yesterday for a cash-only take-away and handling it after so long felt like picking up someone's used tissue! 🤢
