Prepping for pandemic...

I was quite blasé about the novel corona virus outbreak but things I've read today have changed my mind.

I'm not usually a prepper but best things to stock up on for a pandemic?

Surgical face masks?
Latex gloves?
Anti bac wipes and hand wash?

Why are you being such a GF Forestwitch?

Genuine question...

I'm reassured that we've been told about the two cases reasonably quickly. Hopefully that will encourage everyone to take sensible handwashing etc precautions sooner rather than later and we can slow the spread.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2020 12:10

At the moment cases are low enough in other countries that they can be rapidly contained. Also it is too early to say whether they have spread it further.
We've also got the issue that the virus will continue to adapt and evolve - let's hope it evolves into a mild virus. That is perfectly possible.

Can I just ask, what goggles are everyone buying? And I know that you can preorder the Cambridge masks, but I can’t see any ones for kids, or am I just being daft? Thanks x

NewHorizons2020 · 31/01/2020 12:25

@scaryclare666 I've preordered the medium sized adult Cambridge mask as it will fit my daughter based on measurements. Also couldn't see any child sized masks so got the tape measure out. Also have an 8 month old baby and no mask for him so will need to keep him indoors if it spreads.

NewHorizons2020 · 31/01/2020 12:26

Not even looked at goggles yet ! If it gets that bad & I need to go out will end up putting swim goggles on !

Coronavirus is now in the UK

Pinkroses21 · 31/01/2020 13:01

2 people infected. They were staying at a hotel in Yorkshire. And then were transferred to a hospital in Newcastle.

ofwarren · 31/01/2020 13:04

I wish they would say where in Yorkshire. My liver transplant child is due to attend hospital in Leeds next week.

Pinkroses21 · 31/01/2020 13:06

@ofwarren yes it's very frustrating. They aren't been very specific right now. Probably to avoid panic. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pinkroses21 · 31/01/2020 13:08

I live in Yorkshire and it's worrying. But I can't say I wasn't expecting it. The government have been very laid back. When people were arriving at airports from wuhan they weren't screened or tested, only given a leaflet on what to do if they start to feel unwell. So I can't say I'm surprised. It was only a matter of time.

Newdadtogirl · 31/01/2020 13:14

Masks arrived...

If no use for Coronavirus I can use it (Breaking Bad style) to make Crystalmeth!

Prepping for pandemic...
ofwarren · 31/01/2020 13:14

@Pinkroses21 I lived in a town that had a lot of cases of swine flu in the last pandemic. My friend was pregnant and died. It's all well and good people saying don't panic, but this is scary. I just wish I could move to the middle of nowhere till it all blows over ☹️

ofwarren · 31/01/2020 13:15

Wow newdad, what type of masks are they? Impressive!

Pinkroses21 · 31/01/2020 13:19

@ofwarren that's tragic. Im sorry to hear that. I think everyone takes good health for granted. We rarely think of others that may be already in a fragile state. I admit, I was very laid back with swine flu. Had it for a week or two. Was just like a normal bug. I was very lucky. But I do agree that it can hit other people a lot harder. So I do think we should all take extra precautions. If not for our sake then for others.

MynameisJune · 31/01/2020 13:25

@Pinkroses21 I think, but I haven’t seen it confirmed, that people are saying the 2 confirmed cases are the couple who were being tested in the hotel at York. There are 4 centres for disease control in England, 2 in London, 1 in Liverpool and 1 in Newcastle hence why these have been taken to Newcastle if they were in York. I think they are Chinese tourists. But this is speculation from what I’ve read online as I can’t find it confirmed on any news website.

NemophilistRebel · 31/01/2020 13:34

I’m not one for worrying normally but being pregnant i am far more concerned than with previous SARS / Swine Flu

Skyejuly · 31/01/2020 14:07

I wonder if it's better to catch it sooner before the hospitals get packed? Ideally we would avoid it. I also wonder if build up immunity to it is better than complete resistance with masks? It's not going to disappear is it...

MynameisJune · 31/01/2020 14:18

@Skyejuly I was thinking about this last night, on one hand the first ‘wave’ would have access to more healthcare workers etc because of less overcrowding but the subsequent ‘waves’ would have access to the increased knowledge of the disease and possibly better/more targeted treatment.

Isthepopea · 31/01/2020 14:27

I’ve seen a few people wearing masks on public transport. Also every shop is sold out of hand gel.

Skyejuly · 31/01/2020 14:34

Will people realise they just need to keep washing hands.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 31/01/2020 14:39

Washing hands won’t help all that much when the virus spreads through droplets.

Skyejuly · 31/01/2020 14:40

Well no but what will the hand gel do that is different?
