Preppers

Prepping for pandemic...

I was quite blasé about the novel corona virus outbreak but things I've read today have changed my mind.

I'm not usually a prepper but best things to stock up on for a pandemic?

Surgical face masks?
Latex gloves?
Anti bac wipes and hand wash?

@kakfor. 😱😱

HasaDigaEebowai · 31/01/2020 07:41

Actually 'Ive been epecting the numbers to be increasing exponentially. The increases have been a pretty steady 1000ish more each day. Now the figures might be misreported of course but if they are accurate then that's not as bad as it could have been.

MissPoldark · 31/01/2020 07:42

That’s in response to the James Lyons-weiler article.

MissPoldark · 31/01/2020 07:43

I thought the same hasa, providing the numbers being reported aren’t being controlled.

NaturalBornWoman · 31/01/2020 07:57

Is James Lyons-Weiler a neutral source? Quick research suggests maybe not.

MissPoldark · 31/01/2020 08:35

Hmm, yes, seems to be an anti-vaxxer.

Facemasks, are on their way, we already have disposable n95 masks and goggles for our family of 5.

I have ordered the following :

For curry tea, with adaptogenic herbs
1 kg of tumeric
1kg of ginger

Bee propolis resin and tablets

To make healing tea for respiratory system
Icelandic moss
Echinacea
Elderflower

Feverfew for bringing down a dangerously high temp, however this is a last resort herb as the body produces a high temperature to kill viruses, so really lots of water should be given for this.

We already have the above items but have ordered more to keep our stocks up.

We also have 2 jars of home made echinacea tincture in the store cupboard.

3 kilner jars of dried rosehips

Home dried herbs such as kelp, valerian etc

I have a fully stocked med box.

Fully stocked food larda and could easily make our stock of 2 months of food last a lot longer due to my foraging and bushcraft knowledge.

So pretty prepped already, we are as much off grid as possible due to chosen life style choice.

Looks like it's finally reached the UK, two people have tested positive. Saw on the Guardian just now...

Will be interesting to see where the two cases are and the circumstances...

Not been confirmed but they were testing two Chinese nationals in Hertfordshire yesterday so it could be those that have tested positive

Skyejuly · 31/01/2020 10:08

I guess it was inevitable...but not nice. I am drawn between major prepping and not panicking. I think I will keep my small stash that will be helpful but not wasteful...i don't have masks.

MynameisJune · 31/01/2020 10:20

It was always going to show up here, I’m torn between thinking it’s good they haven’t released where and bad because there could be others with symptoms thinking they’ve got a bad cold when in fact they live near the infected people and have crossed paths etc.

Our cupboards are stocked and we have masks due to DH’s job but I’m carrying on as normal until we’re told otherwise. The cases in other countries don’t seem to be spreading massively or quickly as in China. So that’s promising.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2020 10:36

I would not expect confirmed cases to be rising exponentially. That would infer that medics have an unlimited access to test kits, the staff to do so and the time to process and release the results. With such a rapid increase in cases it seems extremely unlikely to me that they could turn tests around at the speed required to follow a perfect model.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2020 10:37

With regards to the UK cases. How are people who may have been in contact with these individuals supposed to keep an eye out for symptoms? Are PHE going to be contacting them and swearing them to secrecy? It's an odd stance to take and one that other countries have not adopted.

SomeOldIdiot · 31/01/2020 10:38

The 2 are in Newcastle apparently and recently came back from Wuhan, this begs the question of the other passengers with them on the flight back, are they going to be traced? they will all be walking around have unknown exposure to possibly hundreds of people. There is no way to contain this at all

Skyejuly · 31/01/2020 10:41

That's ridiculous.

MynameisJune · 31/01/2020 10:50

@OhYouBadBadKitten I was referring to places like Australia and Thailand who have had confirmed cases for a week or so now. If it was spreading quickly I’d have thought their numbers would be jumping up quicker than they have been.

@SomeOldIdiot where did you hear about the 2 confirmed cases? Yes it’s scary when you think how many people have flown to and from China in the last month.

ApocalypsePlease · 31/01/2020 10:54

Our inept Gov should have stopped all flights immediately. I fear it is too late now

NemophilistRebel · 31/01/2020 11:05

I’m surprised flights weren’t stopped immediately too.

All those people on that flight. It’s a spiders web of potential transfer
