Anyone due in August?

I am due my second baby boy on 18th August. Just went to midwife on Thurs and was told he is breech - panicking slightly, as I thought by this stage (34+ weeks) they pretty much stay in the same position! Midwife tells me there is plenty of time for him to turn, so fingers crossed!
Would hate to have to have c-section as I found giving birth to my first little boy naturally 16 months ago very painful, but the most rewarding and fantastic experience I have ever had.

Many commiserations, my loves.

I'm with the 'start something you can't interrupt' pack too. Having a haircut did it for me...managed the cut, but not the time to dye it so gave birth looking stylish but grizzled.

Myersthecat, I can safely say that labour will almost certainly not be a Big Fun Time, but that getting it over with is fab. Mind you, then you start the rollercoaster of Life With Small Baby

Oh no, Katherine - you're still here! Mine both went over 42 weeks, and were covered in vernix when they came out... some people just 'cook them' longer!

mears · 19/08/2003 11:16

This is the problem of having a definitive date isn't it? Bear in mind that it has been shown that for many women, 42 weeks is the more accurate length of pregnancy. Katherine - it is highly likely that your due date isn't accurate because of your history of conception. Try and get yourselves out of the overdue mindset. Your littlies just want to stay put for a bit longer. Try and focus on other things - make arrangements to do things. If you get caught out so be it. Making arrangements for lunch with friends usually does it Hang in there, you will all be posting announcements soon enough. I am getting quite excited for you myself

Thanks guys. I'm quite happy with the "Baby will come when its ready" outlook but of course the hospitals etc aren't always quite so flexible. I KNOW my baby couldn't have been due on the original due date as it would have been concieved when I was still bleeding from my miscarriage. Last week the Dr was happy to use my own revised due date but the MW has just been round and is insisting on using the old one. I just can't keep up with what is going on.

To make matters worse I discovered a major problem with the website I run this morning. Had just sent off a string of irate emails to the chap who has caused it when the MW turned up. Of course my blood pressure has gone up and that coupled with protein with my urine has got her alarm bells ringing, although she did feel the protein was because I've had a bit of a show so nothing to worry about. She's coming back to check me tomorrow.

She also wants me to have another growth scan on Friday and then some monitoring to check everything is OK as by her dates I will be 42 weeks then. However she did say if I was reluctant to be induced then they will give me a sweep and do daily monitoring as long as everything seems OK.

She thinks the baby has grown a bit more and the head is really well down (don't I know it - even the local ducks are jealous of my waddle!). She has just given me a sweep. I was in two minds about meddling but I decided that in reality its no different to me trying raspberry leaf, sex, walks, etc so decided to give it a go. She said she could feel the head with her finger and that the cervix was lovely and soft although its not stretching yet. Fingers crossed this gets something going.

Faling that I've told the children to dump all of their toys in the lounge which is where I am planning to give birth. I've been nagging them to keep the room clear for the past month so I thought if they turn it to chaos baby is bound to come. Might give my hairdresser a ring too. Its her day off tomorrow. Wonder if she could dye it for me.......

motherinferior · 19/08/2003 12:22

You could always try a long drawn out sex session, I suppose, some sort of bizarre thing that took loooots of time

All fun and games here now. Next door has got his van stuck in the river coming across to our cottages. He's using our landrover to try to pull it out but the rope keeps breaking. At least its keeping the kids entertained this afternoon. I've offered to give him a push to get things moving - for him and me! Can't get much more natural than a water birth in a river! Only joking of course. But all this standing round watching is certainly making me feel menstrual so fingers crossed......

WideWebWitch · 19/08/2003 14:17

kids' toys on the floor is bound to do it Katherine.

neen99 · 20/08/2003 21:27

Had a hospital appointment this morning so they could put the baby on a monitor for half an hour to check everything was still ok, which it was. Have been having HUGE bh's all day yesterday and some this morning when I was on the monitor, but unfortunately not the real thing!
DH was sure it was going to be last night, which resulted in a crp night's sleep for us both as we were so on edge! Now he is certain* it will be tonight - going to have to go for the long 'sesh' tonight I think, to give it a better chance. (I had been putting that one off... )

Good luck Katherine, hope you have a lovely home birth this evening before me!

Hi Neen. No still here. Everything has gone very quiet. Hoping its the quiet before the storm. Have a good night tonight though.....

myersthecat · 21/08/2003 11:32

Perhaps we should all go for it tonight, might be able to synchronise it!

motherinferior · 21/08/2003 16:30

Oh yes please! You poor loves!

neen99 · 21/08/2003 17:48

STILL HERE!
It was all for nothing... think we're going to have to try the synchronised thing tonight girls... sort of like some weird spell...!

Myers, have they given you an induction date as you are 9? days over now?

OP posts:
myersthecat · 22/08/2003 09:43

Still here too!!!

Had a show last night though (well still this morning too).
Some progress at least. Hit RLT heavily yesterday, oh and chocolate raisins!!! Wonder which did it ?

I'm booked in for Tuesday. Not keen, but would prefer to see little one! Been working on it too long now. Been pregnant for 12.5 months in 15 now!!!

neen99 · 22/08/2003 13:34

Myers, Katherine has beat us to it!

Katherine, are you going to start a thread for 'August babies' now?

OP posts:
myersthecat · 22/08/2003 14:34

Off for another attempt at a sweep this afternoon. Determined that this 'little' bump is going to be born before Tuesday!!!

Katherine and the show have given me new hope. I'd almost resigned myself to the induction.

neen99 · 22/08/2003 22:34

No-one has mentioned a 'sweep' to me either at the hospital or the Midwife. I'm at the hospital tomorrow morning for the baby to be monitored again, do you think I should ask for one then?

It feels a bit weird to have to ask if one can be done, but after tomorrow I've no more appointments until Thursday when I'm booked in for the induction. Partly because there is 'no clinic' on the usual Monday cos of the Bank hols, and that would have been when I went back again to see the consultant.

I thought it was standard procedure from what everyone has said that they tried at least one sweep before inducing you. I'll try anything before giving in to the inevitable induction!!!

OP posts:
myersthecat · 23/08/2003 06:51

You can but ask. It's technically a membrane sweep. It's an internal exam that looks at what your cervix is doing, then if the cervix is open at both ends they can then break the join of the water sac to the uterus to irritate it. It doesn't break your waters. It isn't comfortable (or elegant), but then again it wasn't painful either.

They were quite happy to try on me again yesterday. Again both ends of the cervix weren't open, but the cervix had gone from normal to soft and the length and dilation changed.
It seems to have done the trick as I'm having contractions this morning. Not sure yet if it's the real thing. Just waiting at the moment to see.

I would definitly ask. Apparently it's a fairly standard process. Also ask about the Bishops score. Interesting reading. My had increased from 2 up to 5 between Weds and Fri. At least I knew something was happening in there!

neen99 · 23/08/2003 17:32

Mentioned it to the Midwife that monitored the baby this morning, but she said the reason they don't do it as standard procedure is because it doesn't really do anything anyway.
I said it had worked for a few friends, and she said chances were that was coincidence, and they would have gone into labour anyway.
So no joy there...
She did say that the Doctor may decide to have a look on Tuesday when I am next there for monitoring. But hopefully I won't need that appointment...!
Great news about your contractions, hope your lack of later postings means you have got your babe at last!

Katherine · 24/08/2003 00:12

Oh good luck Myersthecat - hope its the real thing for you. I had a couple of false starts after my first two sweeps - the last one I had was definitly far more uncomfortable but worthwhile as it seemed to do the trick. I found a midwifery article on sweeps which said they were only successful in bringing on labour within 48hrs in 24% of cases and there is a good chance those women would go into labour anyway, but that it had minimal risk unlike other induction methods so is worthwhile if you want to get labour going.

Good luck all of you.

bunnyrabbit · 24/08/2003 15:50

I do hope this is the real thing Myersthecat. What's happening??? Are you still at home?

BR

princesspeahead · 25/08/2003 21:15

any news from myers the cat? hope it is all happening for her...

silly question, but for my last 2 babies I've been induced and haven't even had a twinge before the inductions, apart from painless braxton hicks. This one isn't due until saturday but I've suddenly started having quite mild crampy contraction-like BHs. Not at all regular or strong or anything, but intermittent over the last few days. Are these something that can go on for weeks, or do they mean that something may be happening???

neen99 · 25/08/2003 21:23

Princess Peahead, I don't know, in my experience with both these pregnancies my BH's have been painless like your previous ones. If these are crampy, maybe something is slowly happening?
How many weeks are you?

I'm STILL waiting, but TBH I've resigned myself to induction now. The first few days after I was due I was all excited, will it be today, etc. but now I've sort of put it to the back of my mind, and it feels like it will never happen!

OP posts:
princesspeahead · 25/08/2003 21:52

poor you neen. the waiting is frustrating, but it WILL happen at some point!
I'm due on the 30th (next Sat). after being SO late with the other two, I can't believe anything is going to happen for at least a fortnight, which is why I'm findng these contractions a bit perplexing,...!

Eva3 · 25/08/2003 23:02

Gosh, at least you have the option of induction. They won't with me 'cause of previous c-Sec. I was due on the 15th....only 4 more days to go until I will be (forced) under the knife. HAve also had 2 failed sweeps. The false starts sound terribly frustrating. I am getting sick of RLT and motivation for the perineal massage is nill at them moment. Need to get excited about the (possible) labour/birth again... Need psyching up!
