Pregnancy

What are you missing most.....

Heavens anyone would rather be in any other position but ours and being pregnant is (for most) great (exluding the piles, the heartburn, constantly getting up for a wee...!) but is there anything you do miss but need to avoid? For some reason I seem to want the stuff I can't have more when I'm pregnant. My top three are:

*Soft Boiled Eggs
*Hot Baths
*Wine!

Only about 9 weeks so know I'll soon be adding sleeping on my tummy to the list!

I miss being able to do the food shopping without dry wretching - especially on the bakery isles.

No hot baths?!

Where are you getting your information? I am clearly not reading the right books

A hot bath with a very chilled glass of white is my Friday night staple! I look forward to it all week

It's just recommended to have cooler bath water in the 1st trimester. Apparently! There's some tiny increased risk of mc if the baby's temp gets too high. Or at least thats what my midwife told me. Should be fine if you're out of the 1st trimester though!

Salmonella risk?

Apparently hot baths/showers can raise the core temp to a dangerous level which increases the risk of miscarriage and birth defects, especially in the first trimester. Hot tubs and saunas are worse though as they are a constant high temp but baths cool relatively quickly.

It can also lowers your blood pressure and affect blood flow to your baby at any stage of pregnancy.

Yeah the runny egg thing is because of risk of salmonella.

Hot baths - you're not meant to let your body temp go above 39 degrees (I love 40+ baths) Quoting babycentre....

you do need to be cautious about "hot" baths as they could push up your core body temperature, and this could be dangerous for your baby. Studies on animals suggest that overheating, especially in the early months of pregnancy, may cause birth defects in their offspring.

The type of birth defects that might arise affect the brain and spine. These are called neural tube defects (NTD). Spina bifida is one example of an NTD. But the risks of overheating are greater with hot tubs and saunas than baths. Baths cool rapidly, whereas hot tubs and saunas are maintained at a constant high temperature.

If the bath water is too hot you could also feel faint or sick, as the heat can lower your blood pressure a bit too much. This can affect blood flow to your baby, which is unsafe at any stage of your pregnancy.

No - think I missed it. Would be interested if it sways me think I can have hot baths and runny boiled eggs!!! Sorry but would you mind posting again?

Which incidently just found this about them...
Most UK eggs are stamped with the red lion stamp, which means that they're from hens vaccinated against salmonella. This makes the risk of catching salmonella from a UK egg much lower than it used to be. However, salmonella is present in the environment, so an egg from a vaccinated flock can still get the bacteria on its shell during the journey from the chicken to your kitchen.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has carried out several surveys on eggs in supermarkets and catering outlets and has found traces of salmonella on a small number of eggs, mostly on the shell. Less than one egg in every 250 boxes of six eggs was contaminated.

Trying to wash your eggs before you use them is unlikely to get rid of bacteria from the shells but luckily, thorough cooking will kill the bacteria. This is why eggs that have been cooked until both the yolk and the white are solid are safe to eat. It's best to avoid "home-made" or "fresh" sorbets, meringues, mousses, and mayonnaise, as raw eggs are sometimes used to make these foods. Supermarket mayonnaise in jars is made with pasteurised eggs, so it is safe to eat.

My due date is tommorow, but heres what I am looking forward to!

Sex - i mean, sex that does not require a logistical plan that would put even the British Army to shame!

Tummy sleeping!

Wine!

But having said that I just remembered it will be a while before I can enjoy any of the above,as will be breastfeeding so leaky humungous boobies don't exactly fit the above!

Hey Ho, at least I will have a gorgeous baby to compensate!!!

Ladyintheradiator - we've not supposed to eat bagged salad either.
I have decided that the minute risk is worth the vitamins as i wouldn't be eating salad otherwise.

Not sure if you guys have already seen this:

Sushi (though I do wonder about all the ladies in Japan...)
Wine (have the odd glass though)
Proper exercise
My waist

Am only 17 weeks though - am sure there will be more things, like being comfortable!

Not sure why people don't have soft boiled eggs though - if they have the Lion stamp then you can't get salmonella? I am sure this has been on loads of posts!

Ooh also my midwife says that you can have sushi and pate as long as it is from the supermarket and has been date stamped as that means that it has been cooked or processed to get rid of any germs!

Report
DomesticG0ddess · 13/05/2010 18:32

It must mean that the fish for the sushi has been pre-frozen then as that is what kills the parasites in raw fish (that and cooking). Don't eat meat so don't miss pate!

All this fuss about runny eggs! They're disgusting, like a big gob of yellow snot in an egg cup!!

All my midwife said to me was not to have raw or soft boiled egg & only eat mayonaisse in small amounts & only if it was made with pasturised eggs.
