It's gone all distorted - like chunks are missing but not spots in it's place - like reading a letter it looked like someone has split water all over it. Hard to type - any ideas? Is this a pregnancy thing? My vision went very funny one evening last pregnancy but MW I called said it was a optician thing. Been doing nothing viosony today ie. only 5 mins on PC earlier and no tv.

Is your blood sugar low? I've had weird vision stuff with low blood sugar.

TBH though I would get it checked out asap, just in case it's something like a detached retina, which can be treated if seen early.

wahwahwah · 15/03/2010 12:38

These (I think) are called 'floaters' and they are not uncommon. However, any changes in vision during pregnancy should be checked out. Can you call your doctor or midwife (or even optician?

Most likely it is nothing but always best to check it out.

Go to doctor NOW, or at the very least call your medical centre now. Might be something simple, or detached retina or migraine or anything. But do do do go and get medicL advice ASAP. Please please.

I had occular migraines during pregnancy they disappeared as soon as I gave birth.

I had several a day normally.

here

I found a site that explains them. I don't know if this is what you are experiencing, hope this helps.

xx

ShowOfHands · 15/03/2010 12:44

Sounds an awful lot like a migraine. Mine start like this. Just like parts of what I'm seeing have suddenly disappeared.

Headache usually appears about half an hour later. Was worse in pregnancy.

chuckeyegg · 15/03/2010 12:50

I didn't experience the headaches with the occular migraines just the visual distortion.

I only experienced them when pregnant.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 15/03/2010 12:50

thanks, called DHs work he should be calling back. Not prone at all to mirgranes but I guess anything goes in pregnancy! Tried to reda link, not sure it's like cracked glass - maybe more like looking through water...? getting sore face trying to focus will bury head in heands for abit

Are you seeing any zig zags or shimmery lights at the edge of the distortion? Does the distortion start in a small spot then get bigger and eventually clear?

You are wise to get it checked out.

MarthaFarquhar · 15/03/2010 12:56

I would get and new or unusual symptoms in pregnancy checked but

having said that this is how migraines start for me.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 15/03/2010 12:58

flashy zig zag - it's like I have just pressed my eyes, those seconds before it goes normal

OP posts:
notevenamousie · 15/03/2010 12:59

Migraine is VERY common during pregnancy but that said it can be a sign of something more serious - if you look in the mirror, does the eye look normal? I would have said you need to see GP or Maternity Assessment Unit or whatever you have locally.

Northernlurker · 15/03/2010 12:59

It could be low blood pressure - that has happened to me in two pregnancys. Call your midwife and get checked out.

ShowOfHands · 15/03/2010 12:59

I'd definitely get it checked. My migraines are classical as opposed to occular, in that they do have the visual disturbance but also the headache that goes with it.

Migraines are common in pregnancy, even if you don't usually suffer from them.

It is best to be checked over. I find that a sleep is what I need most and then I wake up starving hungry.

It's also worth thinking if something has triggered it. Without fail, fatigue and dehydration together cause mine. They're easier to avoid if you know what causes them.

I don't get cracked glass effects, more just blank spots, like what should be in that bit of my vision has shifted out of the way and if I try and follow it with my eyes, it just shifts and shifts and I can't 'recapture' it iyswim.

The computer doesn't help btw!!

potplant · 15/03/2010 13:01

Call your doc or midwife.

I had lots of migraines when pregnant and my doc insisted that I get my blood pressure checked each time.

I was higher risk as I had twins but even so its worth putting your mind at rest.

chuckeyegg · 15/03/2010 13:02

Flashy zig zags do sound like occular migraines but as everyone says better be safe and get yourself checked out by the professionals.

MumNWLondon · 15/03/2010 13:02

I had this once during my pregnancy with DS - lasted around 30 mins. Got my eyes checked out the next week by optician and discussed with GP - but just one of these random things! Blood pressure was normal, just vision no headache, never happened again.

morningpaper · 15/03/2010 13:07

yep sounds like migraine but get checked over as visual disturbances can indicate pre-eclampsia - much ebtter just to get checked over

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 15/03/2010 13:12

Thanks all, lesss flashy, more drunky now. Still waiting for DH to call back/come on FB but head in hands so trying not to overdo looking at PC Prob. a migrane , will wait for DH to call MW as obv. cannot drive there

I phoned the midwife when I had a terrible migraine in pregnancy. She told me to go to bed and see how I felt in a few hours. In a few hours I was fine again.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 15/03/2010 13:50

pestering DH now to come home so I can go to bed

just got back from GP and he asked what I though the problem could be (?) BP was 141/88 previously was 120/64 and booking 108/62. Does that sound OK?

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 15/03/2010 19:10

Blood pressure in pg. I never know with bp as mine is ridiculously low.

Did the GP say anything else? Has it cleared at all? Have you rested?
