My vision has just gone all funny

It's gone all distorted - like chunks are missing but not spots in it's place - like reading a letter it looked like someone has split water all over it. Hard to type - any ideas? Is this a pregnancy thing? My vision went very funny one evening last pregnancy but MW I called said it was a optician thing. Been doing nothing viosony today ie. only 5 mins on PC earlier and no tv.

Hmmm.... says 140/90 + is high , I don't want to pester people if it's all nothing. Have had a rest - vision is better, just hard to focus/concentrate , abit drunky. I had the last appointment though and he seemed very "yep yep ok, if you get it again see your optician" so am swaying from worrying to not wanting to make a fuss over nothing

how pregnant are you lemonade?

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 15/03/2010 19:22

MW doesn't check my wee either - just asks if I sting when I wee then writes NAD. Had it checked once about 10 weeks ago (am 26 weeks). Gaaaah, it's 2 weeks until my next appointment...

I had high blood pressure at the end of my 3rd pregnancy. I never had high blood pressure before in any of my other pregnancies and all during my 3rd it was fine. I hit 36 weeks and it skyrocketed. The day before I was due to be checked for BP I got blurry vision. It was quite frightening as I was on my own with two little ones. When I called the midwife she said it was likely that the blood pressure was causing it.

It's good you've got yourself checked out and hopefully they'll keep an eye on your BP.

liahgen66 · 15/03/2010 19:23

also That reading seems a little high for you as yours is fairly average normally.

I would seek advice from mw if I were you as gp's are not experts in pregnancy, you need your urine checked and other things too.

Just give unit a call, better to get seen.

Igglybuff · 15/03/2010 19:26

They should check your urine properly with one of those wee sticks. Also your BP does look high given your previous readings.

I'd see a MW and get the urine checked properly.

AllieW · 15/03/2010 19:29

I get these without headaches - they're opthalmic migraines and they're horrid. Hope that you get things sorted out.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 15/03/2010 19:29

MW told me to rest and talk to GP earlier though I wonder if there is a walk in type place you can check your BP yourself. Do you ever get pre-eclampsia if you have never had it before (3rd pregnancy, same husband) or is it just rarer? I am so glad I have MN!

OP posts:
MiniManhood · 15/03/2010 19:30

You know what, I would really make a fuss, if only to set your mind at rest. Vision problems + highish BP = full entitlement to fuss-making IMO.

Your GP and MW both sound a bit crap. He asked you what you thought the problem might be? Weird. And I always had to provide a pee sample for the MW which (I think) checked for sugar, bacteria and protein in the urine. Presumably protein and sugar wouldn't sting, and it seems a bit of a rudimentary way of checking for infection!

Can you get to an out of hours MW or A&E this evening? I'm certain that they wouldn't think you were being silly.

liahgen66 · 15/03/2010 19:32

If you are feeling unwell and things are different for you as opposed to your normal everyday preg niggles then I would call up the unit and say, "i have xyz, I would like to come in to be checked please". You ca say you've spoken to gp but don't feel reassured by his response.

If on the other hand you feel ok now, then perhaps see how you feel when you've slept.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 15/03/2010 19:37

Thanks, I will ring MW now I think, will say what I have said here - BP is high (for me, even if I am overweight), no wee sample since 15 weeks, vision thingy, dunno what they check for in blood tests (bar iron levels) but they have lost them so haven't had any this pregnancy either (but maybe that's irrelevant). Oh jeez, if they tell me to rest again at least I've tried !

OP posts:
liahgen66 · 15/03/2010 19:40

I think you should insist, just say I'd like to pop in to be checked.

let us know how you get on, it's obviously bothering you so better you are seen.

good luck.

Northernlurker · 15/03/2010 20:50

I cannot believe you turn up at your GP with visual disturbance and a BP higher than it has been and you get the brush off

Makes me appreciate my lovely GP - who had me coming back for review asap when mine went up to 130/90!

You're probably fine but it's good to be sure. Hope all goes well with the midwife - they need to check for protein in the urine at the very least.

differentnameforthis · 15/03/2010 21:26

You definitely CAN get PE if you have never had it before, with same partner. A friend had it on her 4th preg & developed eclampsia. It is rarer, but it happens!

You need to call your labour & del ward. Tell them your concerns & that you feel Dr/MW are not paying attention/taking you seriously

Blood tests can also be used to check liver/kidney function. Urine should have been checked when your BP was discovered to be high (but noramlly every visit).

Once the lower figure (on bp) goes to 90 or over, that is a concern. You are borderline with /90, but with the vision thing I wouldn't be waiting too much longer to be seen

sausagepastie · 15/03/2010 21:30

I had that twice in my second pregnancy, followed by a headache about 20 mins later...didn't last long...weird!

I had the zig zag thing more than the pieces missing.
Hope you are Ok.

differentnameforthis · 15/03/2010 21:33

You are borderline with /88

MegBusset · 15/03/2010 21:44

I had migraines when pregnant with DS2 -- not much pain but lots of visual disturbance, at one point was getting several every day. I used to get them as a teenager but hadn't had one in 10+ years (nor when pregnant with DS1). Luckily they went away when I gave birth.

loueytbg · 15/03/2010 22:30

I'm sorry but the treatment by your GP and MW is bordering on the negligent IMHO.

As OP have said, please get yourself checked out properly. A wee test is really quick and easy to do and should rule out pre-eclampsia. I developed it in my first PG and the first I knew of it was a routine MW visit when my BP had gone up and I had ++ protein in my urine. She sent me straight to hospital. Yes the headache could be a migraine (suffer from those too) but the hospital drummed into me the symptoms of Pre-e - headache and visual problems are symptoms.

morningpaper · 16/03/2010 07:58

Gosh yes I agree with the others, your GP and midwife sound TERRIBLE

Please ENSURE that you are properly and fully assessed - don't worry about making a fuss, you will never see these people again after you've had your baby

roary · 16/03/2010 11:10

I cannot believe they are just asking you if your wee stings!! I'd be tempted to put in a complaint, that is negligent. And you haven't had it checked since 15 weeks??? You should have it checked ASAP even if you have no other symptoms.

Kick up a fuss and get assessed.

(Although I had very weird visual disturbances last week, just like you describe - a hole in my field of vision - and it went away. I think it was a migraine because had my BP checked at routine appt the next day and it was fine).

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 16/03/2010 11:15

Well, left it last night to see how I felt this morning, still have a headache and vision is like I have been up for 20 hours but not like before so rang MW and said about the leap from 120/68 to 141/88, no wee sample for 10 weeks etc. etc. and she said it was their guidlelines they don't see me unless it's 160/110 or more. I dunno what else to do, where else to go. MW appointment is 7th April so hopefully it was just a migrane. I am so upset - they drum into you "any problems, ring this number and a MW will see you" and then they don't want to see you

OP posts:
roary · 16/03/2010 11:24

Phone the delivery suite or day assessment unit of your hospital, explain the situation, and say that your next call will be to the patient liaison people with a complaint. You need to be seen, NOW. Even if it is all fine.

I was sent in to DAU with NO blood pressure increase and NO protein, just because of a headache. They are not being cautious enough. You are quite probably absolutely fine but someone needs to take your blood pressure and check your urine.

Another alternative is to see a different GP at your surgery?

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 16/03/2010 11:29

This was the day assesment unit - my community MW is just for appointments, any problems and I am under the hospitals care direct. My community MW has no contact no. etc, just does clinic 2 hours 1 morning a week. Am just going to take myself off to Lloyds in abit and buy some wee sticks and get BP checked again and just do that myself weekly I guess until 7th April. This hospital is supposed to be one of the top for Maternity care (Frimley Park) but I must have blinked and missed it!

OP posts:
piprabbit · 16/03/2010 11:30

I am that your MW said they only worry about people with BP 160/110.

Mine went up to 140/90ish (did wander around quite a lot) and I was admitted to hospital for a week, ended up on BP medication for the rest of the pregnancy, once home I was monitored in the EPU every other day.

All was fine in the end, went into spontaneous labour and had v. healthy baby. But the MWs and doctors took it all very seriously.

morningpaper · 16/03/2010 11:32

Sorry but you have a headache, a rise in blood pressure, and visual disturbances. It is IMPORTANT that you are properly checked out. I know this is hard and shitty for you, but you need to get a urine test. I agree - ring the maternity unit, or ring a midwife that you had before, and insist on being seen TODAY. Say that you want the tests for your own peace of mind, if nothing else. Get a friend to go with you if you can. Cry if needed. But get tested because it is important. Good luck. xxx
