not sure if this is the right place for this but I just wondered

  1. How long did you take to get pregant?
  2. Did you do anything different if you were trying for a while?
  3. What were your first signs?

I am 32; size 16, have regular periods, 31 day cycles. I came off the pill 10 months ago and ttc. On 11th month.

Just looking for a bit of hope.

Amazingly the first time I decided to 'give it a go' I got pregnant.

The second time we decided when we got back of our holiday in the middle of January we would have another go. DS2 was born in the October of that year.

jeminJanuaryWooHo · 15/01/2010 18:19

Straightaway each time. I know I am very lucky btw.

mosschops30 · 15/01/2010 18:20

dd - took 2 months
ds - concieved by accident
ds2 - took 3 months

However after 2 months of trying for ds2 properly (i.e. doing everything right) I decided that it might not happen, and I wasnt too worried so I stopped exercising, drank and smoked waayy too much (in fact was drunk the entire weekend I concieved), went to a concert, worked ridiculously long and draining shifts.

First signs were all different:
dd - no real signs, did a test when I was late
ds - sore boobs and bad period pains
ds2 - no real signs, again did a test when late

To answer your questions

  1. first time 1 month; second time 4 months (but had a miscarriage); third time 2 months
  2. Not applicable to me, but we had lots of sex, especially when trying for our third
  3. First signs with my first baby were feeling sick and going off tea, alcohol and certain foods around the time my period was due; second time I had felt no symptoms; third time I felt faint and flushed and a bit weird and hallucinatory around a week ebfore my period was due, then started throwing up when p[eriod was due and just knew

Try not to compare yourself too much with others, though. It happens differently for everyone. If you have concerns about it not happening soon enough, go to your GP. After a year of trying I think they'll start some investigations, earlier if you are pushy.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 15/01/2010 18:39

1st time was an 'oops' we only had unprotected sex the one time in the whole month and Ds got conceived.

2nd time we're still trying and we are in our 4th month of trying now. I was so confident and cocky that I would conceive baby no2 the 1st month of trying after baby no1 that I'm just eating humble pie now! Serves me right!

tinylion · 15/01/2010 18:57

It took me a year, and I stopped using the ovulation sticks as I never seemed to ovulate and I began to wonder what was wrong (went to GP etc who told me to keep going) - so one month we had sex every other day throughout the whole cycle (was knackering) and that month I got pregnant. Also did the "put your feet up on the bed head and stay there for 10 mins" thing after sex.

I also lost half a stone (was size 14)before getting pregnant and took folic acid.

I noticed by about the fourth week as I felt terrible, very sore boobs and could smell everything...eurgh...

  1. Stopped using contraception Jan 09, and by Oct/Nov 09 worried might have some fertility problems as I was 36 at the time. Date of my last period was 19/11/09.

  2. I read Getting Pregnant Faster by Dr Marilyn Glenville (only £6 on amazon) and she advises if you are over 35 improve your lifestyle (drink less alcohol, eat better, exercise etc etc) and also go to your doctors for fertility tests - this is to ensure you are ahead of the game as after 35 egg quality declines and the sooner you conceive the better.
For some reason having this conversation with DH seemed to do the trick, we had a bit more sex and here we are. I do wonder if I just needed to make sure my body understood that it needed to get on with it!

It is worth seeing your gp after a year, as you feel more in control and less helpless. You might find one of you have a straigtforward infection that can easily be treated. However as you are under 35 you prob have nothing to worry about - 1 - 2 years is quite normal.

  1. My period was slightly late, but irregular (21-28 days) and I felt as if I had my period but no blood... test showed result in about 10 seconds! Symptoms include got sore nipples (ouch), low appetite, feeling v cold and lots of gas! Nice Had some bleeding too at 6 weeks, but had a scan at 7 weeks and all ok
lazylion · 15/01/2010 19:01

First time took 6 months, the next three I conceived the first month each time (1mc, 3 babies).
Always used ovulation tests, but after 5 months I started using egg white while having sex on ovulation days and then aspirin after ovulation. I'm convinced it was the egg white that helped me.
Early sign was usually zinging feelings (stomach, thighs, breasts) and the odd sharp pain around womb area.
Good luck.

  1. Took us 1 1/2 years to fall pg. Was on clomid 6 months- did nothing but make me miserable and only worked once. Went to see my natural doc had some tablets that rebalance you and one session of reflexology and fell that month. Oddly positive thinking helped, letting go and doing everything your not meant to when pg in one month 2) no i had no idea the signs were there but its a fine line between pg symptoms and af symptoms. Sorry for poor format on phone
mama2moo · 15/01/2010 19:01

Dd 19mo - 18 months to concieve from stopping my pill. I had just got myself out of some financial worry and was a lot less stressed about things.

Dc2 now 38 weeks pg - 2nd try! I didnt go back on the pill after dd was born and Im sure that made a difference.

The main thing is not to think about it all the time because it stresses you out. Easier said then done! Maybe book a holiday and relax

piscesmoon · 15/01/2010 19:03

Immediately, each time-just as well we have birth control now - in the old days I would have had one a year!

Tigresswoods · 15/01/2010 19:07

I posted a long way back but meant to say after doing the deed which did it for us I played the best golf of my life that day.

But I don't think that contributed so you don't have to put that in your TTC plan

thesteelfairy · 15/01/2010 19:10

Aged 31, it took 5 months for ds.
Aged 35 almost a year for dd, was beginning to get worried and then ended up having a random shag (with dh of course but just not at usual time) 4 days after I thought I had ovulated and conceived on that occasion I knew exactly when it had happened - 17th December 2005. So had probably been doing it at the wrong time for months, even though all the signs of ovulation were there. Also during the last couple of months before I conceived I made sure I did not get straight up and go to the toilet or anything afterwards, legs up in the air against the wall and all that.

No signs at all, till missed period. In fact with ds I had a hard time believing I was pregnant at all because absolutely nothing changed, no symptoms nothing. Only really believed he was there at first scan. Same for dd really but not so worried because I had experienced same lack of symptoms before.

bibbitybobbityhat · 15/01/2010 19:12

Aged 38 - 9 months
Aged 40 - 5 months

BellasYummyMummy · 15/01/2010 19:19

hi, good luck with your ttc journey! hope it doesnt take you long, can be a very hard journey!
I have PCOS, started trying 2007 after coming off the pill

  1. How long did you take to get pregnant?
1st time- 13 months with clomid, ended in m/c
2nd time- 3 months after m/c, naturally, have beautiful DD
3rd time- 8 months after DD was born, naturally. ended in m/c
    4th time- 2 months after m/c, am 33 weeks

  2. Did you do anything different if you were trying for a while?
tried clomid, but in the end both were natural pregnancies. I think what made the difference was letting go of the outcome, ttc took over my life, i was miserable and making DH miserable. I took a step back from it all and was like OK just get on with life, thats when i fell PG successfully both times. Also had reflexology the last two times which i think also really helped me destress.

  3. What were your first signs?
i knew when i ovulated, so simply did a test 12 days later. Didnt have any signs.

K75 · 15/01/2010 19:20

First one, first time, was rather shocked after 10+ years of contraceptives, thought it would take a while. Lots of time to invest if you see what I mean back then tho! 2nd time 4 months, used ovulation tests to give us a better crack. Good luck.

Oh, I'm now 34 (was 31, 33) & size 16

Allegrogirl · 15/01/2010 19:31

First time: DD took 18 months, suspected PCOS just starting to go down the fertility investigation route. I was 33. Got pregnant on a crazy trip to Timbuktu. Convinced that going on an all consuming 'holiday' took my mind off the worry of ttc. Felt sick, tired and had sore boobs for 4 weeks before testing. Was too scared to test as I didn't want to be disappointed.

This time: second month of trying and we don't do it as often as we used to (too knackered!). Came off the pill about 9 months before ttc. Did it when discharge was like egg white and waggled legs in the air afterwards. Had slight tingle in boobs 4 weeks after LMP and just knew.

I was size 16-16 last time and 14-16 this time.

Good luck.

kissyfur · 15/01/2010 19:51

Am 39 weeks PG with first baby and got this way the 1st time DP & I tried with no protection (or withdrawal!, sorry if TMI) I was ovulating at the time but only realised that once I knew I was PG. Was a size 10-12 at the time, not anymore though! I know I'm very lucky. Good luck to all of you who are TTC!

merryxmasfellowbumps · 15/01/2010 19:56

6 months and i took folic acid , knew i was wen i couldnt handle a drink or certain foods

good luck

BabyGiraffes · 15/01/2010 20:24

About 8 years and five mcs until I had dd1 (now 2 1/2), then two more mcs until dc2 (due February). So.... conception not the problem but PCOS was stopping me staying pregnant.
My history is obviously quite different to yours but might be worth having a check up for cysts or PCOS because that can really mess with the right balance of hormones. Good luck by the way, 11mths is not really that long for trying - know lots of people who took a bit to have their first.

ChasingSquirrels · 15/01/2010 20:27

ds1 - 10 months, nothing different that I recall.

ds2 - about 10 mins.

Bellepink · 15/01/2010 20:39

PG twice, both in first month of trying, age 35 and 37. I know I am lucky and unusual. First time had just come off the pill, second time hadn't yet gone back on the pill since giving birth to first baby (was tracking cycle).

Signs - none really except perhaps feeling overly emotional, eg. being brought to tears by things like Britain's Got Talent or adverts . Oh and really thirsty!

lizziemun · 15/01/2010 21:30
  1. How long did you take to get pregant?

DD1 started ttc Feb 2002 had dd1 Jan 2004. I was 35yrs when I had dd1.

DD2 started ttc oct 2004 had dd2 Sept 2007. I was 38yrs when I had dd2.
DS Not ttc sex once when dd2 9mths. I was 39yrs when I had ds.

  1. Did you do anything different if you were trying for a while?

No didn't realy do anything different it took so long I gave up following the rules.

  1. What were your first signs? Each time was mum telling me i was pg and I was about 9wks.
decafgirl · 15/01/2010 21:54

It took me over a year to conceive DS. I had stopped drinking around ov time, had decaf instead of regular coffee, had my rubella check up and forced a smoothie down my neck every morning to help me on my way to 5 a day.

The month I conceived I'd strated taking my temperature every morning and was taking pregnacare multivitamin rather than just folic acid.

I felt sick (but wanted to eat) from 14 days post ov and tested about 3 days after that.

We're ttc #2 for the first time this month and I'm starting with all guns blazing...temps, knicker checking and multivitamins.

Fingers crossed for both of us eh?! Hope you get your BFP soon OP xxx

369thegoosedrankwine · 15/01/2010 21:54

With DS1:

  1. How long did you take to get pregant?

About 7 months.

  1. Did you do anything different if you were trying for a while?

Someone said just have sex every 3 days, we did and that is how I got pregnant (was previously monitoring cycle etc).

  1. What were your first signs?

Sense of smell like a bloodhound and boobs went massive and sore and also had an implantation bleed (which I only recognised as one once I knew I was pregnant).

With No.2 (currently 34 weeks):

  1. How long did you take to get pregant?
Never really 'tried' this time. Had coil removed, had sex once and then found I was pg.

  2. Did you do anything different if you were trying for a while?
    Not this time.

  3. What were your first signs?
First sign this time was going out drinking, eating a massive chinese meal and then sick as a dog during the night (had no idea I was pregnant though). Again I did develop an amazing sense of smell and sore and massive boobs.

Good luck.
