not sure if this is the right place for this but I just wondered

  1. How long did you take to get pregant?
  2. Did you do anything different if you were trying for a while?
  3. What were your first signs?

I am 32; size 16, have regular periods, 31 day cycles. I came off the pill 10 months ago and ttc. On 11th month.

Just looking for a bit of hope.

Hi Paperchase

The ovulating kits are used to let you know when you are ovulating and so the best time to get pregnant. There are only a few days in each month that this is possible.

I used them whilst trying and got pregnant within 8 weeks of coming off the pill. My LO is now nearly 10 weeks old and I will be 40 in a week!!

Bluemary3000 · 28/01/2010 16:45

1} DD - 18 months as I came off injection contraception and it seems to stay in my system for ages.
DS - - 13 months plus 1 miscarriage

2} DD - gave up trying, booked lots of holidays, took contraception advise from a friend (the pull out method does not work!! He realised this 3 months later when his girlfriend got pregnant too.) and spent a week shagging on holiday whilst very drunk.
DS - nothing different again, got drunk and had sex, this time not on holiday at the in laws

3}my cycles are fairly set, so when I didn;t come on, I knew. Although with DS, left the test a bit longer as I miscarried at 6wks and wanted to test after that just in case. Didn't want to get excited again for nothing.

For me booking lots of holidays and having drunken dirty rampant sex seems to work. I advise this to most people if they are trying and if it doesn't work, then you've had some good times anyway

scubagirl · 28/01/2010 17:44

first two times first and second attempt but sadly ha dtwo miscarriages. third time round first attempt again and my wee boy is now 6, I was 37 and had been on the pill forever. two years, loads of sex and sixth cycle of clomid for number two. I still swear though that it was a chinese massage that left me covered in bruises all over the back of my pelvis! I was 40 and was really upset about the 'terrible' massage until I did the test 6 weeks later! you never know.... best of luck

oldgreybird · 28/01/2010 17:46

I was nearly 35yrs old and I'd been on the pill since I was 18. It took a week to get pregnant! How do I know? Because that week was the first time without any contraception and I felt terribly car sick when we went out in the car the next day, like I had never felt before.
I was shell shocked for the first couple of months that it had happened so quickly and found it quite difficult to adjust to the idea. I had taken a long time to even consider the idea of trying to get pregnant and I had been on the pill a long time and had expected it to take a while.
I also got pregnant the second time when I was nearly 37 within a month of trying so it wasn't just a 'one-off'.
I have friends who have taken a year or two to get pregnant and resolved the problem by in one case going on holiday and being much more relaxed and in another case having lunchtime sessions and generally upping their quantity of sex and in another case, having themselves investigated and discovering they had fibroids which were easily dealt with and cleared the way for a quick pregnancy afterwards.

  1. (1) within a few months, not trying though. (2) DS1 - first month of trying, but within a month of tubes being flushed (so may have helped?)(and had come off pill but had only been taking a few months) (3) DS2 - first month of "actively trying" after about 18 months no contraception, but was breastfeeding, (4) pregnant again now - no contraception since DS2 but was breastfeeding, one period - he was about 13m.
  2. When 'trying' I did lie down for about 15 mins after sex, pillow under bottom or legs in the air resting feet on wall , had sex when I estimated I was ovulating.
  3. Missed period before anything else and feeling abit 'odd' .

I am 23, irregular periods, pregnant between sizes 14 and 18/20. So apart from DS1 it's taken 4/5 - 18 months to fall pregnant.

stellabgh · 28/01/2010 18:39
  1. How long did you take to get pregant? 4 years
  2. Did you do anything different if you were trying for a while? Took ibuprofen for a bad back for 2 months, not sure if it's coincidence or not.
  3. What were your first signs? Nausea
freshairfanatic · 28/01/2010 19:09

Took us 2 years. The blue line seemed a miracle after so many months of disappointment and negative tests.

DH reckons it was keeping legs pointed at ceiling for longer after sex (ie giving the swimmers a head start) that made the difference.

First sign (bizarrely) was a "period" that was much lighter than usual and didn't stop. I bled/spotted for 2-3 weeks.

Now have a wonderful 11-mth-old DD

Good luck.

FrithaF · 28/01/2010 19:32

Took us 7 mths for 1st conception - missed ms at 12 wk scan. Then another ms 2 mths later followed next month by conception of ds. Then 2yrs later with one further ms and a couple of early or late periods after having achy breasts and odd sense of smell, and of trying with ovulation testing, had tests via gp.

Told by gp 5 mths ago that dh practically infertile and may as well give up (neither of us wanted to go through ivf and offered no alternative). Dh took second test after chasing doc only to find everything normal.

Have now been advised to seek gyn referral as problem may be retaining pg, not in getting pg.

Feel very angry and cheated, although my tests may make it impossible to have another anyway - have to wait and see.

The plans you make in your head are never how it happens - keep trying and make sure you talk to the right person if you feel things are not going as you would like.

cheerfulvicky · 28/01/2010 19:58

We were trying for just one month before I fell pregnant - it was a bit of a shock! I did make an effort to do it around my most fertile time, and did that thing where you prop your nether regions up for a bit on a pillow afterwards. It obviously worked anyway!

glasgowlass · 28/01/2010 20:17
  1. Started ttc aged 21, fell pregnant aged 29 so 8 years. PCOS, tried clomid, IUI, IVF.

  2. hadnt used any form of contraception for 8 years so, no, didnt change anything

  3. walked in from work to find DP tucking into spaghetti, meatballs & arribiata sauce(normally one of my favourites), had to run to the toilet as the smell made me heave.

glasgowlass · 28/01/2010 20:18

I should just add that i dont have typical PCOS symptoms other than heavy irregular periods, slim size 8, petite and healthy.

marmalade32 · 28/01/2010 20:29
  1. I was 30 when I started trying and had been on injection for approx 10 years, fit healthy size 14. It took just under 2 years. It took a year until my periods came back and then another 10 months on top of that.

  2. After 20 months I bought a book by , I think Zelda West Meades. I'm not normaly into hollistic anything, I like science and fact, but ws getting desperate! Was pregnant by the 2nd month. Maybe coincidence I don't know.

  3. I just knew I was pregnant, don't know why. Was getting bad stomach cramps but they felt different to normal cramps, athough were exacty the same.......sorry not making much sense, but suffice to say I just knew.

Good Luck

EightiesChick · 28/01/2010 20:57
  1. Took 8 months, and I was 35 when we conceived.

  2. Had done temping a la TCOYF and used OPKs, to no avail. In the lucky month, we actually only had sex twice, as we were both ill and had mentally written off that month. Both times were late on in my cycle, too. So I'd say, while it's good to know your cycle and system, it can also surprise you. While there is only a short window of opportunity, it can be good to shake that up sometimes. Also, DH had been taking zinc, magnesium and vitamin E for about 3 months by then.

  3. No physical signs but I had a pretty regular cycle so tested when I was 5 days late. I had no morning sickness at all. I did quickly start to feel very tired and could fall asleep easily in the first couple of months.

GingaNinja · 28/01/2010 21:01
  1. Started trying at 32. 5 years later almost to the day since stopping pill DD was born.

2)DD born after IVF 1st attempt (clomid et al hadn't worked; PCOS and generally incompetent innards) Had suspected problems when ov tests kept coming up blank regardless of brand etc plus v heavy irregular periods.

3)You take an early p-test with the IVF 14 days after embryo transfer. I was convinced was NOT pg after cramps etc for most of previous 10 days. Had lined up going for a run, eating shite junk food and getting blisteringly pissed to commiserate/celebrate last chance not working. Except it did! Change of plan was therefore required

VengefulKitty · 28/01/2010 21:03

We decided I would come off the pill the month I turned 23 and see what happened. I had been on it since I was 14 for period regulation and pain.

We weren't actively trying but would be happy if I fell pregnant.

I fell pregnant the next month!

corriefan · 28/01/2010 21:10
  1. 9 months but mc at 11 weeks, had 1 period after that then got pg again with DS, when DS was 10 months had 1 period and then got pg with DD.

  2. Got pg first time when we stopped having sex everyday and chilled out about it all. having a new job helped take my mind off it a bit.

3)Just very tired and late period. Had several months when trying imagining symptoms. I learned to just test if i started imagining things rather than working myself up.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 28/01/2010 21:14

Have you come across this website? You get a 30 day free trial when you sign up and it's fab for helping you to work out your most fertile time. You will need to by a BBT thermometer though.

I am in my 4th month of trying for baby no2, with baby no1 we weren't even trying and he was conceived after 1 night of unprotected sex!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 28/01/2010 21:15

oops, forgot to add link

alibubbles · 28/01/2010 21:22

The first month after coming off the pill with DD, fell pregnant with DS when DD was 12 weeks old, on DH's birthday, DD totally breastfed, but on the 7th floor of a a hotel in Paris and my cap was in the car.

I also then fell pregnant despsite being sterilised when DS was only 5 months old

addictedtolatte · 28/01/2010 21:41

1} it took me 6 long hard years. i was diagnosed with sub-fertility due to pcos but i never gave up.

2}i started taking agnus cactus after 5 and half years. i just gave up and stopped trying and unbelievably fell pregnant.

3}i was vomiting all the time but was treating myself for heartburn as i have suffered with my stomach for years.

good luck and i hope you succeed and think of all the fun you will have trying

HKmama · 28/01/2010 21:42

First time took a year but then had a miscarriage, another year to get pregnant with DS1 - got very stressed and obsessive - stopped drinking, ate healthily. I got pregnant when I got bored with the whole thing and started drinking again! I did read Toni Weschler's book Taking Charge of your Fertility and did temperature monitoring for a couple of cycles which was even more helpful than the ovulation sticks.

With DS2 I got pregnant after one lucky morning with DH...only 4 months after DS1 appeared - woo hoo.

sallyjaygorce · 28/01/2010 21:48

About 5 mins, more's the pity.

I came off the pill after more than 10 years, one little slip that month and there we go. (I was 33.) I am lucky. Have many friends who have taken much longer - a few years. But almost all have eventually conceived naturally. Only one who had successful IVF and one who, very sadly, lost a pregnancy and then had no more.

Good luck - you have everything on your side.

sarah40011 · 28/01/2010 22:05

with my boyfriend i tried for 3 years, we split and i very quickly met someone else. i was pregnant in 4 weeks. i had a lot of stress with the first boyfriend, i think that was a factor

HoratiosMummy · 28/01/2010 22:31

1 and 2) First "practice" month and fell with twins - mainly, I hasten to add, because at 37 I was expecting it to take up to a year at least and I was enjoying myself, maybe drinking a little too much wine and frankly, not thinking about the task in hand, so to speak... completely shocked that I fell pregnant!
3) Had a maximum 26 day cycle since I was 11 - only time ever missed/late was with my previous two pgs - now both strapping young men - have had 9 day cycles before, but NEVER 27 days - so as soon as period didn't arrive I knew!

notasausage · 29/01/2010 09:38

6 weeks. I was 32 but have never regularly taken the pill and I'm sure that makes a difference. I was also aware of my body and when I was ovulating.

I had sore boobs but thought that was just my period being due, but I was constipated which is apparently also a sign. I knew once my period was late but didn't "feel" pregnant until my GP had done a urine test.
