Is there a thread for the old birds who are pregnant and over 40?

I'm on a fab thread on the ttc section but am now 7 wks preg .

I know it's early days but I wondered if there was a thread on here for the older pregnant woman who might be experiencing all the same things as me.

God, I hope I'm not tempting fate by coming over from the ttc side!!!!!

Hello,
I hope I'm not being cheeky to barge into this thread as I might not belong yet! I turned 40 a couple of weeks ago got a bit drunk which I rarely do these days and we threw caution to the wind by using the withdrawal method as contraception! I am now slightly late with period but have only had 2 cycles since I stopped bfeeding my 9 month old baby so i'm not sure when exactly its due. Part of me is elated but I'm in a panic too which is why I'm not in bed.
We've 3 kids already struggle a bit with money although both in good jobs and have a 7 yr old, 2.4yr old and 9 month old baby. I'm still off on mat leave and have figured out that I will look pg when I return to work if that is the case. Its dhs birthday today so I haven't said anything yet. I'm swinging between joy and panic. I don't want to tell anyone in case I'm wrong and i feel a tad foolish as well!

Congrats Schipo very well done! I hope everyone else keeps us updated.

Hippychick do you have some news for us?

I just had my nuchal scan at 11 weeks, told I am nearly 13 weeks but that can't be right. Nailbiting waiting for results...Have stopped feeling so miserable and thankfully can drink tea and coffee and EAT again so I just had a (very healthy ) 4! marmalade sandwiches with lots of butter. Maybe that is why they looked so shocked at my weight at the clinic

KiwiKat · 02/06/2010 22:48

Thanks for doing that update, Frankenfanny.

Funnily enough, I haven't put on any weight at all - but I am SIGNIFICANTLY fatter, so maybe the baby is consuming all the muscle, what there was of it? Luckily you can't tell just how wobbly I am unless I'm naked, and thankfully no one other than DH and DS have to put up with that sight. I bought some bra extenders, as my ribs (rather than my boobs) seem to have expanded so much, and I've now nearly graduated from those. Blimpdom, here I come ...

Quick question - would anyone be up for a meet-up if enough of us lived in a lose enough area?

I'm in London.

lee69 · 07/06/2010 22:03

Hello all, well so far so good, morning/whole day sickness is now starting ease...but still very tired.
Had my first appointment with the midwife yesterday(home visit)told the older children it was someone coming to talk about the house!!! so I was told my pros and cons for being an older mum...Im at the mo very much against the thought of having an amnio, but have booked myself in for a Nuchal scan with blood test which is due on the 20th of june but had to book privately as none offered on NHS in our area.
Franenfanny how long before you get your results? I has presumed they were given straight away ??

LooL00 · 08/06/2010 10:23

Lovely thought about the meetup Kiwi but I wouldn't be up to travelling to the next village let alone the big city!I have spd and the babies head is 2/5 engaged and, as the physio put it so nicely, my pelvic floor is 'trashed'. I've got the mw coming on thurs to talk about my homebirth and I'm just hoping that this one will arrive somewhere around 38 or 39 weeks so I don't have to stamp my foot about induction. I'm suddenly freaking out about everything, worrying simultaneuosly that it will arrive early or late.

lee i had a nuchal scan with dc1 and dc2 and the nuchal scan results are immediate, but I'm sure you won't get the blood test results so quick ( I wasn't offered a blood test) and they may wait to combine the statistics for the 2 tests. I didn't have the nuchal scan for this one as I wasn't going to have amnio so there didn't seem any point in setting off down that route.

MamaBubs · 12/06/2010 21:34

Haven't been on for a little while, but all good here. Had my 12 week scan and nuchal measurement was good, although I'm awaiting the combined blood test result, I really do think all will be well,

Have now broken the news to all our family and friends - so emotional and we have shocked so many - especially after it was thought we could never have children.

EDD is 17th Dec, so a here's hoping a very happy christmas

pinguina · 13/06/2010 09:15

All good here too - 30 weeks. Nine more to go before c section!
Found a mat nurse which has taken a big load off my shoulders - yesterday was visited by friend with a newborn and dd1 (who turns 2 in August) kept hugging him a bit too closely, if you know what I mean, slapping him hard and pretending to be 'nice'. Uhm. Then spent morning at A & E as she managed to eat piece of metal - thankfully all ok, now waiting for it to pass!!
Kiwi - I live in Herts but do come over to London every week and would love to meet for coffee!

hippychick66 · 13/06/2010 17:10

Hi ladies. Yes you rumbled me I do have some news for you. I am pregnant again, 6 weeks today - BUT -

I'm feeling a bit at the moment.

Since Friday i have been having the tiniest bit of pink/red spotting. It is literally just like small specks on the tissue.(Not even every time I wipe).

But, of course it's enough to make me feel very scared.

I still have all my pregnancy symptoms and am trying desperately to focus on them but a bit of me just keeps thinking it's all going wrong again.

I do have the occasional sharp pain in my cervix as well so it's possible the specks of blood are coming from my cervix.

I am going to try to get a an appointment with my lovely GP tomorrow (she has some emergency slots) and ask her what she thinks. I'm hoping it might just be thrush again (I had that in my last pregnancy and it made me very sore up inside and caused some pink spotting).

Anyway, i'll let you all know how it's going - just need a bit of hand holding from you all at the mo!

I really wanted to come back on to this thread in a much chirpier mood anyway I sincerely hope I'll be on here for a long time!

Kathsunn · 15/06/2010 09:42

Congratulations hippychick66! Hope all goes well over next few weeks.

Just had 12wk scan -- waiting for results....
It's driving me mad ... the waiting!!

I thought the older mother was supposed to have more patience.

DuelingFanjo · 15/06/2010 10:19

Hi there

apologies for gatecrashing but I wondered if any of you had had really good Nuchal scan results and if you could maybe explain to me why?

Did anyone else here walk in with a risk of 1 in 77 ish and still get a good result?

I have been given an overall risk of 1:80 after an initial age related risk of 1:77 because I am 40.

the neck measurement was 2.4 which took my risk up to 1:65 but the blood risk came out as 1:100 and so reduced that risk to 1:80.

I am always amazed and jealous when I hear of women of my age getting a one in a thousand result and wonder how it's possible when the starting risk is so high.

Have booked in for an Amnio anyway but just interested in what other people have been told.

Persnickety · 15/06/2010 10:33

Hi DF. As you may know from the December thread, my overall result was pretty good (1/1200), but I got a measurement of 2.8 mm at FMC and 2.1 at C&W and am a tad distraught over it. I don't have the overall risk from C&W yet so 1/1200 is from FMC.

More detailed info here (if you are inclined to read my mamouth post):
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_tests_choices/974543-very-different-nuchal-fold-test-results

frankenfanny · 15/06/2010 10:51

Congratulations Hippychick66 hope your doctor has some good news for you and keeping fingers x for you.

DuelingFanjo I got my results back last week and they were "good" because after the test came back the risk went down from my "walk-in" risk due to age. Don't have the exact figures but approx walk-in 1:100, after scan & bloods 1:500. Neck was 1.8 can't recall bloods. I don't think a measurement of under 3 is any concern.

They explained as risk of CVS and Amnio 1:100 I had to weigh up the risk factors. My head was spinning with it all. I think the conclusion I came to was that if it was as high as 1:50 I would go for further testing. Even with an asessment of 1:2000 you could be the 1 so only amnio will say for sure, so some people will want it no matter what. But I felt the nuchal scan showed a vigorous healthy baby and, importantly, my partner was so reassured he is convinced baby is 100% fine therefore I didn't want to chance it.

Having said that, I read that if you choose your amnio doctor carefully the risk is a lot less than 1%, that figure is outdated.

And being the worrying sort, I now have the standard abnormality scan, rest of pregnancy, childbirth and infancy to worry about the health of my baby.

PS Even when I was in my 20's they didn't give me risks in the 1000's so don't know how that can be either, especially with the age factor!

DuelingFanjo · 15/06/2010 11:14

thank you frankenfanny love the name by the way

I feel a bit cheated as none of my results were very bad but I still feel like I should make sure by having the Amnio. I've managed to get a doctor whos risk is one in 300 so hoping for the best.

My nuchal risk is actually only about 1.24% but I am just concious that I could be the one in 80 and I would rather know.

thanks again for sharing your results

ande · 15/06/2010 11:58

Hello all,

Sorry for the lack of personals, but I'm pretty tired. Thought I'd let you know of the (eventual) safe arrival of my DS. He was born by ECS at 0954 on Saturday 5th June weighing 6lbs 12oz. He still doesn't have a name (frankly i despair that we will ever decide!).

Needless to say we are all besotted......

LooL00 · 15/06/2010 13:08

Congratulations ande, hope you are well and that baby is letting you get some sleep. neither of my dc had a name until 5 weeks, everyone thought we were barmy at the time, but we just couldn't decide!

Good luck hippychick.Hope you stay with us this time.

I'm struggling at 36w with spd but everything else ok and homebirth planned. Saw the consultant again for 'old birds referral' but no one mentioned induction at 40w.

Hope everyones scans and amnios go well.

AlbaDeTamble · 15/06/2010 14:26

hello... MrsCrabby as was, back again after short absence. Couldn't let you come back all on your own Hippy.... and crossing my fingers for you that you get that scan soon and see a healthy little heartbeat.

And wanted to say congrats to Ande! Lovely news.

I'm 41, pg for the 3rd time this year (MMC at 11 weeks in February, v early miscarriage in March, and now 11+2, had 2 reassurance scans already and so far so good... and past the previous sad milestones)

I'm starting to get a little worried about nuchal scan at the end of next week, and Duelling and Persnickety, you've both got me thinking that DH and I need a long hard think about possible outcomes before we go. I was 1:2000 but no nasal bone 3 yrs ago with DS, and was all set for a CVS as it's a major marker, but was talked out of it, had a re-check a week later instead at which point all was fine.

Persnickety, if FMC are giving you such a different measurement to the C&W, might be worth calling them up and telling them, they may well get a senior sonographer to re-check for you (just thinking they are supposed to be the centre of excellence, and if so different to NHS they may be very happy to double check for you). If they then confirm 2.8 perhaps think about further tests, but if they confirm the C&W result, you may be reassured? Best of luck whatever you decide. And good luck with the amnio Duelling, I hope it turns out well.

Hi guys. I saw my lovely GP today. She said it sounds like a very minor amount of spotting but she is taking no chances - she got me booked in for TOMORROW for a viability scan. I was amazed cos i thought it was too early but she said they will scan if you're over 6 wks and I'll be 6 +3 tomorrow.

So i have a scan tomorrow and hopefully will find out if all is ok in there. The spotting is so slight that i am trying really hard to be optimistic (which works some of the time). See I told you she was a lovley GP. She even asked me to drop a note in to the surgery to let her know how we get on.

I will of course let you know how I get on as well. Please don't fret if I don't let you know immediately - hopefully I'll be busy dancing up and down the street.

GP has given me a pessary to treat the possible thrush but she wants me to wait til after the scan incase they do an internal.

Thanks for joining this thread again with me alba - i hadn't realised that you hadn't ventured back here yet. I know it's early for me to re-join but, for obvious reasons, i do have particular affection for this thread .

Congrats to ande I don't know you at all - but it's always lovely to hear of healthy safe arrivals.

Hippy, delighted you're on here, and hope to hear very good news from you tomorrow. Good to see you too, Alba.

Congratulations Ande!

Persnickety, good to see you - did you ever get the email from me, after all that?

AlbaDeTamble · 16/06/2010 07:33

Will be thinking of you Hippy, very very best of luck.

Hi Kiwi, good to see you too

and good luck getting a rescan Persnickety. Forgot to mention my scan with good odds but missing nasal bone with DS was also FMC, it was the sonographer who talked me out of CVS and offered the (free) rescan.

Persnickety · 16/06/2010 10:45

Sorry, Kiwi. I have replied now.

Oh and if there is a meetup somewhere in London, I would definitely be interested.

hippychick66 · 16/06/2010 13:18

Hi. Well it was inconclusive I'm afraid. Sonogropher was a lovely girl.

She could see a sac but nothing else. The sac is quite small and she said she wouldn't expect to see anything in a sac that small.

So basically it is either not viable and has stopped developing or just too early to see. I have to go back in 12 days and she wants me to remain positive. I asked if she had seen other people with this at 6 weeks who went on to be ok and she said - yes.

When I got upset my DH said she got upset as well - bless her.

I'm trying to stay positive but do think it isn't good news. She said even though I was charting when I ovulated I couldn't really know when i conceived and it could just be too early.

My friend at work saw only a sac at the first scan and then a baby with a heartbeat a week later.

I thought that at least today i would know what the score was - but alas I DON'T!!!! arrgghhh.

I'm off to bury my head in the strawberry patch - someone dig me up in 12 days please.

DH has been wonderful and very positive.

I did say to the lady, I guess i might just bleed more and lose it before the next scan and she said that was quite a negative way to look at it - yep that's me!

Thanks to you all. I know you'll be here for me over the next couple of weeks.
