damn, I see ds's shortened name is in at 47! Now here is a question I have always wondered about - why do people christen (give/name) their children with shortenings? Like Freddie or Jamie (but not in particular).

we call Tafara - Taf (unless he's in trouble)

Tongai - is well ermmm - Tongai - can't shortern it

jampots · 26/06/2005 00:10

nooka - my dd's friend is called esra and she's a girl. She also pointed out that her name backwards spells a*se! Amazing what 12 year olds spend their time doing! Agree it is a lovely name but cant help but think of bums when I see her

Janh · 26/06/2005 00:14

My Sam has never been anything other than Sam but his Sunday name is Samuel. If I had ever had a Kate or a Lizzie they would have been Katharine or Elizabeth first - proper names (and lots of choices later! I wonder if any of the children now named Katie or Freddie or Charlie will choose to lengthen their names when they grow up?)

jampots · 26/06/2005 00:15

my dd was always called Eleanor until a teacher at school asked her if she could call her Ellie (year 1) and since then she is generally known as Ellie (her preference) but hope when she grows up she's revert back to Eleanor as its such a lovely name

nooka · 26/06/2005 00:23

I guess if I really didn't like the long name I wouldn't choose it, even if I liked the shortening. (I am aware that may be just my opinion ) Ah - mistyping there - it was Ezra we were thinking of. I didn't know there was a female form.

My brother is Theodore - always called Theo. Apparently he was bald for a very long time and my mum said people thought he was called Theobald and that she had very bad taste!

I agree Janh. Some short names are fine for little boys/girls, but may not suit them so much if they grow up to be a serious sort of person.

Also it's handy having a "Sunday" name (good term) when you want to tell them off - then they know it's serious!

jampots · 26/06/2005 00:26

i wanted ds to be Theo

QueenOfQuotes · 26/06/2005 00:29

"Also it's handy having a "Sunday" name (good term) when you want to tell them off - then they know it's serious!"

oh definitely - works very well with DS1

Being a good boy - Taf
Being a little irritating - TAFARA

Being downright naughty - TAFARA YEHUDI!!!!!

DS2 is a bit more tricky - can't shortern Tongai to anything - so there's only the two 'options'

Good - Tongai
Naughty - Tongai Scott LOL

If dd had been a boy I wanted to call him Ptolemy. We had a bit of a row about it, culminating in making everyone who phoned us try to spell it... We had a girl and called her Isabella. Dh was very relieved!
Our baby who died was called Octavia Mirabelle Patience (beautiful one who suffers difficulty without complaint) and her twin has Hope as a middle name (Emma Hope Alexandra).

dropinthe · 26/06/2005 01:44

My name is Jonquil in RL-its French but is also a daffodil-I hated it when I was younger but have grown to like it-think carefully though when you inflict these crazy names-bullying is rife these days and a name can be a bain of a childs life! I know-I was always called John at school and in later years and I hated kids saying I had a boys name!

moondog · 26/06/2005 01:50

It's lily actually dropinthe!
(And alovely name too!)

dropinthe · 26/06/2005 01:52

Do not shatter my mothers words that I am a narcisus!!

dropinthe · 26/06/2005 01:52

Alright,my spelling is bad too!

moondog · 26/06/2005 01:54

Hey,lily sounds a whole lot better than daffodil surel?!

moondog · 26/06/2005 01:54

Allthe same family no doubt, being bulbs.....

lunachic · 26/06/2005 02:14
