My daughter has a Scots Gaelic name that's not that uncommon in Scotland but which some may find hard to pronounce down South. As she's a dual citizen, I don't worry about how the name will come across in America, as unique names are quite common there.

My work colleague's cousin, however, just named her son Neo. As in 'The Matrix'. Yep.

lou33 · 25/06/2005 15:15

ooh, we have matching boys!

MrsGordonRamsay · 25/06/2005 15:17

Well.......... I don't know about that, mine is a holy terror at the moment and has an answer for everything.

Hoping school will calm him down a bit.

lou33 · 25/06/2005 15:20

bonnie/donbeam, Eden is a boy's name, of the public school variety!

MistressMary · 25/06/2005 15:32

jensen

Janh · 25/06/2005 15:34

There is a book called Up a Road Slowly, one of my all-time favourites, set in rural America (NE I suspect although it never specifies) and there is a girl in that called Eden.

Also I have a feeling that the Jalna books, which I loved when I was about 12 (my mum used to read them, Mazo de la Roche?) had a female character called Eden too.

Aha - according to my Bible, Behind the Name, it's feminine , tallulah.

lmccrean · 25/06/2005 15:46

My daughter Eva-Rose...
"..is in position number 8819 in our 2004 list. Last year it was in position number 4503. Your name has dropped 4316 places since last year "

Hmm..is that good or bad?

I know a Syke-Blu, Blade, Clay(e?) Manford (gets "Manny") a Che and a Kai.

charleepeters · 25/06/2005 15:50

im afraid ds has a boring name - Jack! it suits him though our next one will be Phoebe for a girl - Alfie for a boy.

Miaou · 25/06/2005 15:51

There is a book called Eden Close by Anita Shreve too, and a book by Ruth Rendell (but writing under another pseudonym, Barbara Vine I think) where one of the main characters is known as Eden, although her real name is Edith. Can't remember the name of the book now - really good one too.

aloha · 25/06/2005 16:09

My daughter's name is somewhere in the four thousands, but shooting up the charts, which I feel a bit cross about. excellent site though.

fairyfly · 25/06/2005 16:14

louee · 25/06/2005 16:15

blueteddy · 25/06/2005 16:15

I also knew a little girl called Jessamy.
I work in a school & have come across loads of unusual names in my time!
We have a little girl in our class at the moment called Eilish.
I also know of an Eleri, Coralie, Ynais (prounounced Anay), Kya & a boy called Marley.
One school I worked in had a poor boy called Ronnie Mc Donald!!!

feelingold · 25/06/2005 16:17

My kids have gone to playgroup/school with Alfie, Oscar, Peaches, Gage, Rogan, Connie, Elsie and Connell. I think they are quite unusual.

blueteddy · 25/06/2005 16:27

I have an Alfie & think it is pretty common now, especially since the one in Eastenders!
I am quite pleased that it has dropped 10 places from last year though!

jangus · 25/06/2005 16:45

Just checked the popularity of my own name.... not very popular at all as it happens, it doesn't appear on the database.... Joycelyn !!!!!

Janh · 25/06/2005 16:48

Joycelyn or Jocelyn, jangus? I've never come across Joycelyn; Jocelyn is very old-fashioned but pretty. You could call yourself Joss!

Janh · 25/06/2005 16:50

Hey, we've swapped places, sort of - this is mine:

Nbg · 25/06/2005 16:55

When looking round a prospective Nursery for dd we saw a little girl there called Loveday. I thought that was her surname and asked why they called her by that and they said "Oh no, thats her first name"!!

My dd is Madison which we thought was quite unusual at the time but now there are alot of them.

My favourite has to be Coco though.

NotQuiteCockney · 25/06/2005 16:57

Oooh, tamula, Blu's mum's name wasn't Wendy was it? (If it was, then I know her!)

I know a Trinity, a Blu (her sister is Blaise), I know an English boy called Yves, I know two children called Bo (a boy and a girl). I know two children called Bede, too.

Oh, and DS2 was almost Hector. But he's not. His second name is Xavier, though.
