The boring/annoying things that other people say

Hope you feel like venting within this thread about the things that people constantly say that you find boring or annoying. Mine are:

Them: "And how far gone are you now?"
Me: "24 weeks" (For example)
Them: "Oh, you don't look that far gone..."

Every time!!!

"Hello fatty"

Them: "do you know what it is yet?"
Me: "A boy"
Without fail this is always followed by:
Them: "Thought of any names yet?"
Me: (quietly in my head) "No, baby won't be here for WEEKS!"

I have a big gap between mine, 11yrs, 9yrs and new baby due in May 2010.

95% of people have asked me if it was planned. (it was.)

Or if it was a 'surprise' (no, actually I know what caused it.)

'That's a big gap'
'you're going back to nappies and starting again'

and the classic from the midwife-

'is it the same Dad?'

It is the opposite for me. "When are you due?" followed by a look of silent shock when I say February; I can HEAR them thinking, "How much bigger can you get!?". Erm, I have no idea and I'm slightly worried by it myself.

Or worse - "Not until February? You're HUGE!" Yes, I know, I look in the mirror, thanks.

I hate "How far gone are you?" like you have some kind of terminal illness.

(Not PG by the way - just wanted to clarify that )

Perhaps you should stay at home and never go out or, if you do go out and someone approaches to pass the time of day with you, you should turn your back and walk swiftly away in the opposite direction.

"are you hoping for a boy?"
"was it a surprise then?"
"are you mad?"

My personal favourite "oohh, you're going to have your hands full"! As if it is somehow unheard of to have more than two children!

I have a ten year old and two year old, and actually I would love another after this and quite like "having my hands full thanks!"

Also, as I have two boys already, "OOhhh I bet you want a girl this time!" Actually, a healthy baby is my preference boy or girl!

And, "are you going to find out what you're having?" I say, I already know, a baby!!!

From a light-hearted perspective...I've had a few gems from my secondary pupils now that I'm 25 weeks...
"you still having a baby, Miss?" (err, yes, I haven't changed my mind)
"you still not found out what it is Miss?" (we've chosen not to, strange as that may seem to them)
"will you still be a teacher after the baby's born?" (I know I've got a bad case of baby brain at the moment, but I'm hoping to retain my qualifications)
"so will the baby be half-French then?" (I teach French but am quite clearly British...)

Bless 'em though. Least I'll know what I'm doing when this one's a teenager.

"so are they identical then?" (twins)
"yes"
"do you know what sex they are?"
"yes, girls"
"what both of them?"

me: "erm, yes, being identical tends to mean they are both going to be the same gender"

And no kidding I have been asked this at least weekly

And the "you're going to have your hands full" (have 3 yr old as well) annoys me - yes I KNOW that... it has crossed my mind ooh maybe several thousand times a day!

Does this have to be about pregnancy?

If not, I hate it when people say 'For my sins' and 'anyhoo'.

Every single day at the moment without fail I seem to get at least one person commenting

"are you sure you're not having twins??!!" (quite sure, same as the last 5 times you've asked! )
or
"wow, you've got so much bigger than when I last saw you" (which was yesterday at work! )

and no-one can believe I'm 'only' 33 weeks pregnant...yes I know I'm huge, but please stop pointing it out!!

From young girls, early teens, without fail

"have you decided what to call it?"
"Yes"
"Tell me"
"No"
"oh please tell me, i won't tell anyone"
"No"
sad disappointed look

or even worse

"When's it due?"
"February"
"ooh, my son/daughter/wife/brother/niece/greatnephew/ggrandchild has their birthday in february. What date?"
"11th"
"ooh, my son/daughter/wife/brother etc etc is on the 10th/11th/12th/13th/14th...etc" Maybe you'll have it on their birthday.
[me] "mine is the 20th, so I'm hoping to have it then."

or

"When's it due?"
February
"ooh, it's a lovely month to be born in. Not too hot, and by the summer it'll be much more active and you'll really enjoy being out with it"
yes, i was born in february, it is a great month to be born in.

Yawn.

I'm not pregnant (well probably not) but whenever I mention maybe having another I get asked why I would want that when I already have a boy and a girl like its some kind of bingo game and there is now 'no need'.

"Blimey two under two!"

"Did you plan to have them so close?"

Weegle I have non-identical twin brothers and love your twin cnversations, people generally know nothing about twins. you and they will OBVIOUSLY have these questions forever.

Also I have not even popped this one yet (our first) and I am being asked about the next one. I really shouldn't tell people that we are only having one... it just starts more boring coversations.

I find that people are appalled we found out we are having a boy - I get "Oh, you've spoiled the surprise", "That's cheating!" etc... As though we will be blase about the arrrival of our baby because we know he is a "he"!
Also am constantly being told I look "well"... I know what that means!!
And the negative types who say things like "You don't know what you're in for..." That really annoys me for some reason.

"Make sure you catch up on your sleep now"

Hmm last time I checked I didn't think you could actually bank sleep and take it out at a later date.

"If you think you're tired now wait til the baby comes"

Well thanks for making me feel so much better but you try growing a baby and we'll see how much of a party animal you are.

Most people are lovely though

sunnybump which is complete bollox - I got WAY more sleep when DS was a newborn than when I was pregnant. And even though I am caryying twins now I am still sure the same will happen - surely they won't wake every 20 mins - will they? will they? please god, they won't will they?????

Another one who's sick of the jaw dropped gawping when I announce that I'm only 33 weeks. In fact, that's been going on since about 26 weeks.

I am, apparently, far too big to be only x weeks pregnant and also far too low to be carrying a girl. The fact that the sonographer took a look inside and decided this is no replacement for old wives tales apparently!!

sharon137 I had one woman at work who, upon finding out I knew the sex, told me not to tell her as it'd ruin her surprise!! it's not like I even know her outside work so she's no doubt going to hear about baby through office gossip before I see her after the birth anyway!

GoldenSnitch the jaw dropping at how many weeks I am seems to have been going on since I was about 26 weeks too, so fed up with it seems to mainly be people that are actually much bigger than me normally that are commenting though so I console myself that they're using my pregnant shape to make themselves feel better!!

MiniMilk - one of the women who decided that I was far too low to be carrying a girl had also just told me that she was very jealous as she had 4 boys. I think that may have clouded her judgment somewhat

Sunnybump I second Weegle... I had awful back pain in late pregnancy which left me sleepless and exhausted and was fed up with people saying in hushed tones - "well, if you think it's bad now, I don't want to worry you, but... "

Well - ha! - my DD has reflux and screamed pretty much constantly at night until it was diagnosed, and it was still more fun than the back ache. So there!

Weegle, I am a twin. When I first met a now very dear friend, I mentioned I had a twin brother. She then asked me if we were identical......... there was a jaw-dropping moment of silence before we all pissed ourselves laughing. In the 20 years since then, I have discovered that she is given to making these incredibly stupid statements as she doesn't think before she opens her mouth.

Does it make it worse if I say she has a First and a PhD in life sciences?

Them: "oh you're waddling already!"(at about 25 weeks pg)

Me: "yes, I have SPD and it bloody hurts".

Them:"OMG!!! You are hhhheeeeeeooooge!!" (with the face that comes with it).
Repeat ad nauseum everyday on school run.

Them: "oh when my sil/mil/sister/dog gave birth, she almost died, the baby almost died, she was in labour for about 2 weeks, in agony, prolapsed afterwards, front and back, her scar ruptured, she had to have a hysterectomy etc etc etc "
Me: "thanks for that".

I didn't announce to my extend family that I was pregnant until I was nearly 6 months and begining to look large. My Sister in Law still refers to my pregnancy as 'that short pregnancy that you had!!' She is serious. I don't bother to explain I went the full 9 months anymore!!
