Hi folks,

Anyone gone private for an early scan? you can't get an early reassurance scan in my area but there is a company - healthcarenow ltd in Edinburgh - that offer early scans from 7-11 weeks for £55.

Anyone been for something similar or know of another route?

I am also having HcG levels done next week but I would like the reassurance of an early scan since I m/c at 8.5 weeks (discovered at 11wks) last time.

Hi

I'm also new to this thread. I live in Glasgow and I'm 21 wks pregnant and had my 20 week scan last week. Yes I had to go private (Nuffield on Great Western Road). It was £250 - pricey but it was reassuring. I thought about kicking up a fuss but in the end I just couldn't face the stress and figured I'd rather part with the cash than have the hassle!

It is ridiculous that we don't get one routinely.

Anyone else been to Nuffield?

geordiemacminx · 26/09/2006 13:58

Welcome chocaholic!!!

I'm only 9 weeks so havent had private scan yet.. although have had one NHS, got another one on thursday. Think I'm gonna go for 4d scan in Glasgow when the time comes!!!

Did you find out what you were having?

suis · 26/09/2006 16:01

well, I am the second Scot on here then.. born and bred.

No idea what I'm having, other than a baby, and that's a weird enough idea at the moment. You'll gather from that that it's my first. Even though it's entirely intentional and we are both very pleased that the wee one is coming along, it's still a very weird experience.

weeonion · 26/09/2006 18:35

wayhey - 2 new folks! welcome suis and Chocalholic1!

it is all so patchy here in terms of what we get offered..... just think - the money we have to fork out on additional scans could have been spent on the cots, clothes and bits for our new babies. bloddy disgrace!! as i have said before on this thread, i have spoken to someone who works in the scottish exec who is very interested in this. i am gonna wait til after my first appt at the hospital before i am getting back to her.
power to the people --- power to us pg ladies!!

GMM - my dp is with yrs on the hypnobirthing but i have said that all nocturnal priveleges may be withdrawn in the future if he dosnt at least consuder it. ha!

weeonion · 26/09/2006 20:31

Chocalholic1 - which hospital are you attending? vio and i are at the princess royal at the royal infirmary..

Chocalholic1 · 26/09/2006 20:50

I am going to be at the Southern General when the time comes. I've been there quite a lot already at EPAS and it seems pretty good.

Chubszuki - can't believe they made you watch videos of forceps and ventouse. If it has to happen then fair enough but how can watching a video make it seem better! When I get to go to the parenthood classes I will get dh to watch that bit and debrief me later!

I'm also Scottish born and bred - though did used to live in "down south" in England!!!!

weeonion · 26/09/2006 21:20

Chocalholic1 - what is EPAS?

Chocalholic1 · 26/09/2006 21:30

EPAS is early pregnancy assessment service. I was referred there as I had some early bleeding and thought I might have a miscarriage. They are great - they give you blood tests to check not ectopic and an early scan to confirm heartbeat. So despite the lack of 20 week scan I did get my money's worth out of the NHS with several early scans to check little one was ok!

Chocalholic1 · 26/09/2006 21:35

Do any of you girls live in a flat (it's a Scotland thing - when I was in England everybody lived in houses - so it is relevant to Scotland). I do and am wondering how I am going to get us upstairs (pray for no caesarean!!!!) Wondering what pram to get. I am finding this area, out of everything, is the most confusing!

ja9 · 26/09/2006 21:35

hi all!

i've scanned the thread bt some of info is quite old so wondering if anyone could fill me in without me having to google.

i (think) i would really like to find out the sex of this baby and am wondering about a private scan. I'm in central scotland. where should i go to and how much will it cost? i am currently 18 weeks.

weeonion · 26/09/2006 21:48

chocaholic - i am in teh same boat as you in terms of a flat - up on 2nd floor. we have been talking about it as there isnt room in the "close"/ shared hallway to leave a buggy nor would i want to. one idea we have been told of is to store it in my car outside??? if any of you know of a great easy to fold buggy - pls share the info!!

hey ja9 - welcome here! where in central scotland r u? i am going private to Healthcare Now limited \link{http://www.healthcarenow.co.uk/}

i think it is around £200 for the gender scan??

ja9 · 26/09/2006 21:50

hi weeonion! coolname!!!

i'm in stirling.

£20 is still steep - i thought they had come down in price....

ja9 · 26/09/2006 21:50

£200 that is

£20 is more what i was hoping for tho'!!!!

weeonion · 26/09/2006 22:07

ja9 - there may be other places cheaper - maybe nuffield but i think it is around the same! i agree - bloody steep. we are forgoing xmas pressies this year do pay for them all......

suis on this thread is from stirling as well!

grannygoose · 26/09/2006 22:19

Goodevening all

I havent read the whole thread, but this is just a recommendation for Healthcare Now. My DS is 11 months now, but DP and I went for a private scan at 23 weeks. It was a fantastic experience, and a cut above the sausage factory experience at our booking appointment (12 weeks).

The staff at Healthcare now are great, and our ultrasound technician (sorry, not sure of the correct terminology) was brilliant. At this stage of the pregnancy, I think it was called a growth scan. It really reassured us that everything was okay - from functioning organs to just knowing that all the limbs were there. The technician took her time, and explained what she was looking at in great detail.

As an added bonus, we got to find out the sex of our baby....It was a really positive experience, and I would recommend it to anybody. I can still remember the feeling we had when we came out of the scan and texted all of our friends and family to say all was well and that a boy was expected..BRILLIANT.

GG

geordiemacminx · 27/09/2006 09:07

Welcome to all th newbies...

This whole scan thing is really starting to stress me out.. I have no idea whether to have the nucal scan or the dating scan or the 4d one.. or whether I will get any of them on the NHS (obviulsy not the 4d one)... there doesnt seem to be anyone who can answer these questions either... its really starting to get on my nerves!!!

Right thats the morning rant over and done with.

weeonion · 27/09/2006 09:57

oh gmm - i am really sorry that you are stressed out about this. i think it is pretty patchy what we are offered. you seem to have beenok so far and i think at wishaw they have been good - you have had scans already??? maybe the rest of us are stressing yu out because we havent had anything or have no -one to ask.
as far as i know from my doc- we do not get the nuchal one for free in scotland. all i am getting next week at the hospital is booking.

as for 4d - i really dont know. i think liath has had one before??????

Seona1973 · 27/09/2006 10:03

Sorry havent read the full thread bit understand it has loads of scottish lassies on it (like me - born and bred here though )

I stay in Wishaw and here we get one scan which is a dating one - I had mine around 14 weeks (originally had one done when I thought I was 12 weeks but turned out to only be 10 weeks so not big enough to do measurements - had to get another one 4 weeks later)

You do not get a nuchal scan unless you book and pay for it yourself and the same goes for a 4D scan. I got one done around 26 weeks in Glasgow as we dont get the 20 week scan.

Seona1973 · 27/09/2006 10:06

I went to Babyscanning in Glasgow and they do a basic 2D sexing scan for £95 or a 2D scan with a 2D dvd for £120

geordiemacminx · 27/09/2006 10:37

Thanks for clearing that up Seona. I live in Uddingston and am attending Wishaw so I guess its the same for me..

trixymalixy · 27/09/2006 12:53

Hi everyone,

Can i join the scottish thread too?

I live in Glasgow, I'm just over 23 weeks pregnant with my first child.

I was also really upset about the lack of a 20 week scan. I wrote to my MSP and the director of services at the Princess Royal to complain and I think my consultant would have given me another scan had they replied in time, so I would recommend you do this if you are early on in pregnancy as it might have some affect.

I left it too late and we have booked a private scan at the Nuffield tonight at £200. I'm really looking forward to seeing the baby, but quite nervous in case there's anything wrong!!

Re light prams, have you looked at the Micralite Newborn+. That's what I'm getting as I have a bit of a dodgy back and a small car.

liath · 27/09/2006 14:04

Hi folks!

Re buggies and flats - we were in a 2nd floor flat when we had dd and we got a buggy with a collapsible frame that we stored in the car boot and carried her up & down in her car seat that then clicked on to the frame. We got a quinney zapp although I'm not 100% sure I'd buy it again as it does have some drawbacks.

Hope that's some use. We bought it a week or two after the birth and just used a ring sling out & about before that. Then we bought a house which was MUCH better!!!!

gomez · 27/09/2006 14:14

JA9 - just been reading this and (1) didn't know you were pregnant so congratulations!! (When are you due?) and (2) You can get a straight-forward scan done at the Kings Park Hospital for probably around £100/£120 quid(was I think about £100 when I was pregnant with DD2). HTH
